Having severe sharp pain in my tooth (upper back) not wisdom anything I drink anything cold water ice cream etc. Went to dentist and need root canal. She mentioned removal but said there’d be a gap and it’s a chewing tooth and that I’d then have to eat on one side when eating.

I think I’m opting for the root canal she refers me to a dentist on the Javan road at rough estimate cost of €1000 then to go back to her and get a crown €700!

Has anyone any experience of getting root canal and tell me the procedure, price, pain? Etc. And how is the tooth now? Thanks!!

tbh would say the crown is on the cheaper side. A friend paid 900 for his about 2 months ago.

Overall, i would say the entire price is average.

I had a root canal and crown a couple of years ago, and that was roughly the price. You can claim some back through health expenses with revenue.

I didn't find it painful, more of a discomfort as it took quite while to do the whole thing.

Obviously you could get it done a lot cheaper abroad but that's probably not an option right now.

Can I ask how many sessions did it take to get done? And how did you fork out all that cash? I have money in my savings but don’t want to touch that. Might just start saving and putting the cash aside. I have a consultation about it at the end of the month.

2 sessions as far as I remember. One for the root canal and then another for the crown.
Yes, it's a lot of money but it's better than being in pain no?

Get a loan from credit union maybe?

Well it’s about 5 visits total.
You were at the dentist already
Now a consultation I presume it’s an endodontist you are going to.
Then back for the root canal.
Need a few week to recover from the root canal , need to careful in that time, chewing and stuff.
Back to the dentist then for impressions for your crown, they might fit a temporary on while waiting for the crown to made.
Then back to the dentist for fitting of the crown.

I think the price you are getting is ok.
    I have 4 crowns.
Have 3 on my front teeth for many years one has been in from my teens . 24 years now and can’t fault them , feel exactly like real teeth.

Last one I got was a molar last year as I wanted to save the tooth instead of pulling it.
Molar doesn’t seem as solid as my front ones but it’s doing the job. Just need to be a bit careful with hard stuff.
Like I wouldn’t chew a chewy sticky sweet or a hard sweet back there.

Okay thanks. And tell me about the pain. I’ve gotten 3 fillings and get a needle so don’t feel anything. Would the pain threshold be more or less the same as a filling or much worse. I just want to know what to expect when they perform the root canal.

pain wise it is no different to a filling.

It's amazing the prices in Ireland for these procedures, I had a root canal done in France on a lower molar and it cost me 400 all in, back in 2017. Paying over 1000 euro sounds ridiculous. I also got fillings done in France at 25 each, your paying 80 to 90 for a filling here.

It helps to read the opening post. The op is being referred to a Specialist Endodontist for the root canal, it is not a routine treatment carried out by his/her Dentist. Root canals undertaken by Dentists would be considerably less expensive, but obviously there is a reason why his/her Dentist cannot do it to the required standard.

I am open to correction on this, in France the State covers 60-70% of routine dental costs making it relatively cheap for the patient. In Ireland, a considerable percentage of the population have medical cards which means fillings are free.

Medical card only covers so much, a rear molar root canal is not covered for example, but they will cover an extraction of it. I don't have a medical card myself, use to frequent France on holidays in recent years so I took advantage of some dental procedures. But for the average person in Ireland without a medical card your paying 3.5 to 4 times more for a single filling compared to France. I'm not a French citizen so I am not assuming the state over there is absorbing any portion of my dental costs.

How much is a root canal done by a Specialist endodontist in France? That is what we are comparing here. In most Dentists here, a root canal on a molar costs a lot closer to the €400 you paid than the €1000 a Specialist charges.

Medical card does cover fillings, what you paid €25 for. My point being that a considerable percentage of our population receive low cost/free dentistry, while others have to pay the market rate. In France the State places limits on charges for Dentists participating in State schemes, something our own Government did until December 2009, then in a cost cutting exercise they scrapped the bulk of the PRSI dental scheme. Now the market sets the price, pretty much like every other service.

It is widely recognised that France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, which they are rightly proud of, and don’t mind paying for through taxation. So you got a great deal, paid for in some part by the French taxpayer.
