    Hey guys,

Has anyone ever replace the EMS in one of these? The symptoms are car will intermitantly turn over but not start. It might go on the second attempt but ocassionally takes longer. It used to happed about once a month but is now occuring daily. I've done a bit of troubleshooting and looking around online and others have had simiar problems and replacing the EMS has resolved it. These were done under warrany though and I'm wondering if its possible to DIY it? The EMS is located in the fusebox and looks to be plug and play.

References here Allgemein (DM) Startprobleme - Hyundai Santa Fe - Hyundai Tuning Forum - www.HyundaiBoard.de - use google translate also this is a video of a similar issue with a keyless Santa Fe and mentions the EMS being replaced as the fix https://youtu.be/X0PLkcnLKH4

You can not just replace, it needs reprogramming too.

If engine are warm or after first successful start, does it starts by first attempt?

Can happen warm or cold, engine will just turnover so far the fix is just to turn off completely and it usually goes the second time but ocassionally can take 3/4 attempts. It's been fine the last few days but has behaved the same before fine for a few weeks and then days of everyother start failing.

Do you know if needs coding for sure? I picked up a new module today and was going to try fit at the weekend the guy in parts reckoned it was a straight swop no coding needed said they sell a fair few of them and had it in stock. Also the youtube link reference makes no mention of coding required.
Should say no codes stored or lights on the dash etc. imobilzer looks good too light behaves the same as when the car starts.

If that replacement fix it, good job! If not you should start from the scratch. Every engine needs only 3 components fuel/air mixture, compression and the spark. All these should be run on the right time and the ratio.

You can ask any time the more information and we will help you as we can.

Just for reference I linked the wrong YouTube video for the fix in the op this is the one I found https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=41WSKqfPLSM showing identical symptoms and mentioning the replacement ems

Arrrgh so this is back after months with it running fine its back. Not sure if its a coincidence or not but about 2 weeks ago the OH flattened the battery and had to be jumped. AA guy said the battery needed replacing but it had been left with light on for 25/30 mins before she attempted to start so I had thought it was just that.

Anyway same issue happened twice last week the first the EML came on after it started - its never done this before - and the second time it stayed out. I was away and hooked up the code reader when I got back Sunday and it came back with a stored code "P0091 Fuel pressure regulator control circuit low" .

I'm thinking replace the battery to start and hope it goes away? Battery is the original 2013 so probably due right?

Fuel Pressure Regulator is the regulator on the high pressure fuel rail. If this is faulty it can cause your starting issue. They can be replaced without buying the whole rail too, think they’re in or around €150 plus VAT.

The battery issue is most likely just a consequence of turning it over so often to attempt to start.

Thanks for that yeah I was thinking the battery was secondary, it happened again and I hooked it up to another car and tried to start just to be sure and it didn't go. No idea then if it was a coincidence or not but I disconnected the battery and reconnected and it went first time. Have found a few references to this fault and the whole fuel system needing to be replaced but they also had a loss of power and I've not had that a few others mention a new fused box due to a bad connection so I guess its a bit of a wait and see :(

Batteries have a shelf life of about 7 ish years before they start to go to crap.

Yours fits in with this range and the cold weather will accelerate their deterioration.

So it sat down again this morning and that's it won't go now. Turns over but that's it, there's an electrical chatter from the engine bay when you turn the key to the run position before start too and thats new or at least I never heard it before. P0091 Fuel pressure regulator control circuit low is now active rather than stored too with the MIL lit . Tried a couple of Hyundai garages today and they can't take it until mid Feb would it be worth getting towed to my trusted Indie?

Can’t say I know too many indie specialists in the area who focus on Hyundai other than the service lads at Hutton and Meade. Would have a strong suspicion that the Rail Pressure Regulator is an issue based on the fault you’ve read or possibly a wire going to it.

The place I’d be recommending specialises in fuel systems but they’re based in Cavan.

Thanks anyway! I got it booked into a Kia garage this morning for Tuesday, they were pretty sound about it too said it's should be similar enough to the Sorento and will only charge €20 to take a look. Just have to get it there now thankfully still have AA cover until Feb 1st!

AA arrived spent a few minutes tinkering around tried it, wouldn't start, plugged in his computer and read some codes, tried again and no luck, then got ready to tow it and tried it once more and the fupping thing started  . I'm not at home but the AA guy told the OH its the EGR and fuel system is fine. Anyway it's going to the garage to let them give it a once over, have a pain in my face with it. Would a stuck EGR cause these symptoms?
