If we get Sanchez we'll actually have too many players in the squad. That's a first

Take a pick of Bennett, Baker, Clark, Herd, Stevens to move out. KEA might want to move for first team football.

Why are none if you mentioning Bacuna? With RB now covered between Richardson, Hutton and Lowton. Sanchez filling the big gap in midfield. I feel Bacuna could be the big winner and surprise a lot if people if given the freedom to roam. Play him instead of Westwood beside Delph, with those 2 now allowed to get more forward to help the attack.

Richardson doesn't play right back and there's rumours that Lowton is on his way out (to Boro).

There's also chat of the Sanchez deal falling through.

The point is those 5 will be enough to keep us up.

I see us finishing somewhere between 10-14th.
I get that its your point, but it isn't a very good one IMO. None of those 5 are world class players (of which there are a good deal in the Premiership) and the other 6 will be very average indeed barring some good transfer work.

Is right back covered though? Hutton, for all his decent performances in mid season, was still bordering on a liability when he last played. Lowton I have never, ever rated and wouldn't be bothered to see him go at all. While solid sometimes, I wouldn't say Bacuna is a great right back either. I would have happily seen someone else come in there to be honest.

Apparently the Sanchez deal has hit a stumbling block involving third party ownership. Would be a shame for this to fall apart now.

Seemingly he will sign soon, within 24 hours.

Nobody in the bottom half of the table has 5 world class players and im not suggesting they are.

At most they are average and we have poor quaility around them.

The bottom half of the PL from last year wouldnt dominate the championship imo.

Squad v Squad those 5 will have us way above the bottom 3. Without those 5 we would be balls deep in the relagation fight.

Well I wouldn't be so confident yet of being 'way above' the bottom 3. Cissokho and Sanchez are the only ones I would say as being good signings. Senderos, Cole and Richardson could be anything, and would need to play better than previous form to be good signings. Out of all the signings and players coming back from injury, Okore is the important one IMO. Hopefully he will be as good as we hope, but he's been a long time out too, who knows how that's affected him.

I honestly think this is nuts. Those 5 players are nowhere near good enough to cancel out the turd that is around them. Villa may stay up but it will not be comfortable.

We had a shocking 2 seasons of injuries.

if we lost Bowey Wieman and Baker instead of Kozak Benteke and Okore we have a much stronger first 11 and bench

Gardener is supposed to be the next big thing and hes been injured

That had a massive difference last season.

Im a glass half full guy this season

Okore is too much of an unknown for me to pin hopes on him. Last year I thought he would be good but would take time to settle in the premier league and wouldn't really come into his own until after christmas.

This is effectively his first year in the PL and he's just back after a year long injury. I don't really think we can expect much from him this year. Hopefully he'll be an improvement on Clark / Baker but how much is very hard to tell.

I've said before that our season will pin on when Benteke (and to a lesser extent Kozak) come back from injury, and if / when we can get them to full fitness. Without them I don't see where the goals are going to come from. Gabby has been woeful for a while now, and while I like Wiemann and want to see him given a chance upfront instead of on the wing, I'd still wouldn't see him as a 15 - 20 goal a season player.

This performance against Chelsea indicates world class potential for me. He hasn't rushed his return from injury so he he should be ok on that front.

World class potential from one game 2 years ago, when he's now only coming back from a serious injury.

The real question is can he do it on a cold, wet and windy Tuesday night in Stoke :pac:

I'll be 100% honest and say I don't know enough about Sanchez as is but if what the little of him I have seen and the bits I've read / heard about the hard tackling, Colombian, defensive midfielder are true then he could be a huge signing and along with players like the returning Okore, Cissokho, Richardson and even the emerging Grealish could make a huge difference if we can get Benteke and co back from injury and firing asap.

Still curious to see what will happen with Bent, Nzogbia and our RB situation as a signing there or those two having big seasons could make a huge difference.

Def: I'd like a specialist RB who isn't hutton but LB seems sorted and CB is probably as good as we can expect it (with Vlaar staying) although we may be overrating Okore (hopefully time will prove us right tho), would like to see Herd moved on while Clark can be 4th choice

MF: If we are still playing with 3 in mifield and Sanchez signs then we are looking good enough with him Delph and one more from N'Zogbia, Westwood, Bacuna, Kia and then when you add in Grealish/J.Cole etc to come off the Bench and things are looking up

Meanwhile upfront Benteke is quality but obviously could take time after his injury, it owuld be great if Bent could step it up in his absence or at the very least make Gabby and Wiemann realize that they shoulc now see their place under tyhreat especially when Kozak is added to that mix meaning as far as CFs go we should be doing ok

THat group are good enough to stay up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,456 ✭✭✭astonaidan

Well it turns out Benteke could be a 50million striker going by Longs transfer

Oh of course, I know it might take him some time and I'm certainly not pinning hopes on him exactly. I just think whether he turns out to be good or not will have a big difference on how Villa do. Benteke of course is important, but he scored lots of goals already and the team were still really poor and almost relegated. Gabby and Wiemann could do with a few months sitting on the bench to be honest. Zog on the left, Grealish on the right to mix it up a bit. I was so sick of seeing a lot of players in the team week in, week out last year that a good few changes will be a relief.

    2-1 Stoke.

    For fantasy purposes.:D

Yeah, he should be first choice and remain there unless he's a complete disaster. You're mental touching him for FF though. He'll usually pick up a yellow, and there might not be too many Villa clean sheets

Just need a dirt cheap defender to fill a space. Hard to expect much from anyone costing 4.0.

Koeman talking openly again about wanting Vlaar.

Grand we'll take Schneiderlin in exchange Ronald. No problem. I would really like to have him at Villa.

A journalist asked Lambert if "Vlaar would be loyal to Aston Villa" and the reply was "i dont think therevis such a thing as loyalty in football anymore".

So you know the whole 'we're relegated' vibe? How's that affected by Pulis pulling a MON and walking/being pushed out of Palace 2 days before season kicks off?

Has to be good for us.

I was just thinking there that this will benefit Villa. Once again there will be 3 teams that happen to be worse off than them.

Then again, when I say that the teams normally go out and do alright in the season.

I'm I the only one who thinks we'll see get three points on Saturday. Also I'm retiring the toilet as it only works in the old apartment, and I'm not moving back to that kip (bar a relegation battle on the last day, then I'm breaking in)

Im not overly optimistic. Whos going to score a goal for us?

would like to see Wieman get a shot as a striker though.

So anyone want to hazard a guess at out first 11 (excluding injuries)?

Not saying it should be this but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like this but preferably with a new RB (hopefully that is the one more signed, though a wide player or AM wouldnt go astray either I guess) and Richardson to be far more than just a LB I could see him starting many games but in the utility rotation sense over a few positions (Bacuna could be similar but with less starts unless no RB is signed).

    ................................(Given)
    ................................Guzan

    .....(Lowton)...(Senderos)....(Clark)...(Richardson)
    .......Hutton.........Vlaar.......Okore......Sissokho

    ...................................(Kia)
    ................................Sanchez

    .................(Westwood)..........(Bacuna/gardner)
    .....................Delph...................N'Zogbia

    .........(Grealish).................................(Cole)
    ........Agbonlahor......(Kozak/Bent).......Wiemann
    ...............................Benteke

Not listed here are: Bennett, Baker, El Ahmadi, Herd, Stevens

also think we wont always be playing this formation imo and Gabby and Wiemanns place should be under threat especially considering their form last year especially once Benteke is back.

Anyone know can Richardson play RB? I know he is versatile but think its usually on the left or central

Actually if there is another signing I would expect it to be a player who could play wide and perhaps a loan signing, Victor Moses or Gnarby spring to mind as having been linked recently and would both fit into the above lineup nicely.

    Sanchez
    Westwood Delph

Anywhoo the main point of the post stays the same, I'd expect something like that kinda line up and actually think we have a good enough squad to stay up looking at that though id like a new RB but wouldnt be surprised if we got a winger on loan like Moses or Gnarby instead.

KEA I presume, my first 11 would be:

    Guzan
    Hutton
    Okore
    Concrete----Cissokho
    The Rock
    Westwood
    Delph
    Richardson
    N'zogbia
    Gabby/Weimann

Benteke to come in obviously and Grealish being introduced as often as possible. Bacuna can offer fresh legs in numerous positions while Joe Cole and Senderos can provide experienced cover if required. Callum Robinson can make a breakthrough too.
With Sanchez unavailable for Stoke I'd say the front 3 might be N'zogbia Gabby and Weimann with Richardson playing central or Senderos starting in a back 3.

Another positive this season is that if anyone is performing below par there will be players available to take their places in the team.
