    Hi

    I'm looking for some do's and don'ts.
Our house was robbed, door forced took about 4-5 grand worth of stuff. Laptops, phones, hoover, jewellery.
The policy says "they will not pay more than 30% of the total sum insured under this section for valuables." - does this mean we get 30% of the total sum stolen back ??
If anyone has any experience making a similar claim with liberty or any provider please advise.
    Thanks.

Say you have contents insurance for €40K, that means that if you have a 'minor' fire which causes no structural damage but which (because of smoke damage) destroys the contents of the house, they will pay out up to a maximum of €40K for carpets, furniture, clothes, TV etc.

As I read it, what that condition is saying is that in the event of theft or accidental damage, the maximum they will pay for valuables (see below) is 30% of 40K. It doesn't mean that they will discount each item by 30%, what they're saying is that you will not be able to claim more than 30% of your contents cover for items which fall into the category of 'valuables'.

The Liberty policy summary document defines 'valuables' as including ....

jewellery, items of gold, silver or other precious metals, timepieces, photographic equipment, binoculars, works of art, antiques, furs, musical instruments, collections of stamps, coins or medals, TV, video, audio and computer equipment.

Thanks....our policy is mainly for building with some contents (items below 3k) obviously they'd hope to pay out as little as possible so i assumed on that basis the 30% was for the valuables sections only not taking it to mean the whole building....they have separate categories for home office equipment and valuables do you know if the laptop would fall into office equipment or is valuables the only option there., what category would a hoover be ?? thanks again

Do you have a home office and any documentation (eg revenue opproved) or specific cover in your policy for this?

The hoover is a domestic appliance, not a 'valuable' so leave that out..... expressed as a percentage of your contents cover, what was the value of the other goods stolen?

Not quite. There is a list of categories and each one has a specific limit e.g. Home office equipment €3,500. But even if you are within the limit in each category, they then bundle everything which falls into their definition of 'valuables' and there is a cap of 30% of your contents cover. So you could end up getting fully reimbursed for a €500 Dyson but not getting a cent for a stolen €50 printer because you busted the limit for valuables.

    See above.

Without specific cover, the OP needs to tread carefully here. The Liberty summary document states that there is no cover for property 'owned or used for business purposes'.

If you're an employee then working from home doesn't count as a business. In any case, you only mentioned a laptop so there won't be a problem.

    thank you for this

value of goods stolen is about 5-6k, mac, good watch making up about 3k, cash 500, jewellery 2k, hoover 400, door damage

there is no specific amount set for contents the policy says we just have the building sum insured and that includes contents benefit for items that cost below 3k...the highest price on an item stolen is either the laptop/watch coming in over 1k each

So in discussions the laptop was for non-work personal use.
Although the cash and Hoover may be disputed I would still add them on the initial claim.
As for the jewlery, if you don't sill have receipts, try looking back through your photos and family's photos to help with estimates.
