Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Kate Humble, Adam Rutherford and Alys Fowler assess what Britain's weather will be like this winter, following the high levels of snow that caused chaos across the nation in 2010. The presenters explore how methods of prediction have developed through the centuries, from medieval folklore to modern supercomputers, and discover how people and businesses are preparing for the possibility of more severe weather in the months to come.

Is it all entirely about snow ( and cold) or will they cover Azores High excursions, sub tropical airflows and heat as well.

This programme just seems to be about why its so hard to make accurate forecasts ,

Some good parts in it but overall it was disappointing.

Although they did say the MET office are not going for a particularly cold winter

Well the general layman doesn't understand that, so maybe it's a good idea to make the program about that!

And the met office aren't going for any sort of a winter - at least not publicly!

Don't have the bbc here, so I haven't been watching.

missed most of it... shucks.... the bit I did manage to catch at the beginning seemed good... the science bit! so did I pick up this right that blocking over ireland and the uk is what brought snowmagadden on us last year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 52 ✭✭damino

One of the forecasts sounded like MT Cran's forecast. So looks like its going to be a cold one with snow:)

any way of seeing this online ???

Was looking forward to this all day but have to say I found it extremely disappointing. There was nothing about long range forecasting methods nor did they speak to any firm doing long rnage forecasts. In stead they focused on the problems heavy snow can cause, why the public should not ignore it and even had a bit telling people to leave peanuts out for birds when it does snow. It was more of a nature programme than a science programme and quite frankly, little or no effort went into it. The title was definately misleading. Very disappointing all round.

Well thats what the presenter said on his wrap up about the MET,

They could of spent more time on the science behind the forecasting or even spoken to some of the Long Range Forecasters in the UK.

It was a bit of a let down. To me I thought the presenters were biased in favour of the UK Met Service. Never really gave any attention to any of the independent forecasters. Still the manager from Morrison's sounded like it was from MT's forecast with the worst to come in the new year but still there will be snow in December.

I thought it was a good programme, better than More Fours programme over the last 2 years.
They covered every type of forecaster, the met uk, the nature observer and the independent forecasts.

Very good show unless of course you actually expected an answer to the question :D Liked the bit about the blizzard that struck during rush hour in Scotland. A bit like here, everyone moaning about it not being expected even though it was well forecast. I blame out of date forecasts given out after the hourly news on radio over here, usually well out of date. For example how often are they still forecasting weather that has already clearly passed over

... I .... VAGUELY remember them saying " Yes It WILL snow "... :);) , where though now.... ye well that wasnt in the title hehe

I was disappointed that they didn't get a bit more into the science of the jet stream, el nino/la nina, sunspots (though we at least got something about the latter).

Turn it off after 40 Mins

Last 20 mins was amazing

I would of thought they would have talked to some other forcasters other than the met office. Obvious choice but they mentioned alot of people look at internet for the weather, then why not talk to some of the people who are behind the forcasting.... surely it would have been a little bit more varied instead of just saying they cant go beyond 3-5 days...

Still i kno wat im askin off santa.... defo a snow machine, pple would rent them like bouncy castles i reckon:D

There is a repeat of this on tonight at 12:20 on BBC 2 :D:D:D:D

The serious flaw was that they didn't talk to any independent forecasters. They kept mentioning the internet and they even had a spot with the presenters looking up some internet forecasts. But they never spoke to any of these forecasters.

It was a real flaw in the programme and I'm surprised that it was allowed to happen. Basically the whole point of the programme was whether long range forecasting is credible and yet they didn't feature any long range forecasters.

repeat tonight at 12.20 for anyone that missed it !!
on sky channel 142 , must record it...
