Drivers trying to escape the bus lane when they see a garda ahead. Let them in?

So, this morning the road was packed and all of a sudden about 15 cars sought to leave the bus lane at the one time. I looked ahead and sure enough the blue reflection of a Garda car's siren could be seen.

Everybody seemed to facilitate their request, even though it was clear they had skipped up to a couple of kms of traffic by hopping into the Bus Lane.

Would you let them in? I'd be inclined not to - "hard luck; you were caught for once". It's sort of pointless paying AGS to police lanes when the general driver conspires against them to help offenders evade punishment.

Coming over a solid continuous white line? That's a paddling. And a no. And if they crash into you, there's a police car nearby. Win win.

    Probably

depends on what car they are driving. BMW, Audi or Merc is a no from me.

    Ah I probably would.

    Absolutely not.

Interestingly a bus lane line isn't treated the same as a regular continuous white line.

I'm the opposite, I only let in mercs and beemers.

Thing is, even letting them in front of you to briskly exit the bus lane and save themselves a ticket may or may not actually save them. I’ve been on the Druncondra road many’s the time and viewed this maneuver resulting in the cop still pulling the offending car aside and processing a ticket regardless.

If the garda car has their siren on, then by all means they're on an emergency call.... get out of their way and accommodate people out of their way.

But if the Garda car didn't have their lights/sirens on, I'd be actively blocking them from merging back into the correct lane.

Match their speed to make sure they are stuck in the bus lane

These are the same pillocks who park like a 2 year old colours, who think the cycle lane is an extension of a hard shoulder and whose only concern is where they're going next and to hell with everyone else. Leave them be, deserve a wake up call on their sense of entitlement. Shouldn't matter if they're driving a Mazda or a Ferrari.

Of course I would. How else will they see my smug, superior, holier than thou, "I'm the only reason you're not getting a traffic fine" face in their rear view mirror for the rest of their journey?:confused:

Seriously though, I probably wouldn't. If the bus lane was good enough for you when the Gardaí weren't there, then it's good enough for you when they are.

On a related matter (and not aimed at the OP), you would be surprised at the amount of drivers who don't realise most bus lanes have set hours of operations. Not that I'm complaining much. Makes my journeys much faster when everyone stays out of the non-operational bus lane :D

I probably would at a push. But I would be muttering unmentionable things about them as I did. It's one of the few enough times I really feel nasty about people. There is this 2 lane approach to my local town and the inner lane is for turning right into the bus station. But people use it all the time for by-passing the constant traffic jam getting in to town. A big long free wheel along the empty road while the rest of us mugs are not moving, often for 15 minutes. And then they casually angle the front of their cars and ''merge'' ie push their way into line just before the place where they should turn off. It honestly makes me feel murderous sometimes!

It always amazes me the amount of people who let drivers skip traffic like this. My regular route often has a free bus lane with the regular traffic stuck. There are always a few that use the bus lane. The cops are sometimes there so catch some. When the cops are there and spotted there are all these cars trying to get back in the proper lane.
Saw some get back into the proper lane. Cycled up to the cop and said I could identify 5 cars that went into the regular traffic. He asked me to point them out. So we walked along together and got them all to pulled over. He simply asked them if they had been in the bus lane and they all just admitted it. They were none to happy with me and one did recognise me a few weeks later and started yelling at me. All on video which I handed in but nothing was done.

Only thing is it can making merging more difficult when everyone is using the other lane!

Fair play Ray, that's a public service.

To answer the OP, no I don't let these people in, Garda or no Garda. I wouldn't be exceptionally aggressive about it - if their nose is already in the lane, I'm not going to go around them to block them, but I'm also not going to leave a gap to let some queue skipping prick in.

Why aren't cameras used ? Seems crazy to me when they could make a fortune off automatically fining them rather than a Garda having to physically be there

Bus lane cameras would fix it handy enough. Like having a gard there the whole time the bus lane is in operation

    Edit. Too slow.

Fookers do that to the hard shoulder on the M50 whenever it gets too busy as well. I hate them so very very much. The last time I saw it happen the slow traffic was because of a car on fire and the fire truck couldn't reach it because these assholes had blocked the hard shoulder.
They should have their car taken off them straight away.

Part of that is because signage is random, too small to see details as you are driving and non existent in some cases. Ordinary law abiding drivers don’t use the bus lane in case it’s illegal and don’t want a fine.

Nah. Theyre not supposed to be doing it, if there happened to be some free space I might reverse to let them squeeze in, but I couldnt care less if they get caught either

The signage is never random or too small on any bus lane I've ever seen. Also, using it when not in operation IS law abiding. Drivers acting like lemmings and incapable of using their eyes would bother me more.

In my experience, most of the signage is fine. Some could stand to be improved, but for the most part it's fine. If a lane doesn't have a sign, I'll err on the side of caution and assume it's a 24 hour bus lane, because I definitely don't want a fine.

And I'm happy to confirm that I am an ordinary law abiding driver. Ask any driver behind me when the lights turn amber :D
