Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes, no. The reason they send out the messages at this time is because it is quite. I don't know if any network could handle a million texts, I know local radio stations topple over after a couple of hundred when they organised text votes.

networks should be better, but good enough I'd think not, and if at a busy lunchtime, certainly not.

What are you afraid of you would just soak up the water.:D

I am sure the system would be jammed of all other texts and only the warning alerts would go through.

There is no emergency override protocol to clear the system for emergency broadcast texts only.

    Interesting fact for the day!

70% chance that Japan will have another significant earthquake (similar to Friday's earthquake) between now and Wednesday.

God help them if that comes true.

Everytime I look at the Videos of Japan, I look out my window, and try to imagine a torrent of water coming at me, with cars and buses tossing around. I just couldnt fathom it. Its really like something from a movie.

I hope it ends soon for them.

Nobody lives near Mount Shinmoe Dake , This Volcano has been alive and simmering for quite a number of years .

That's a load of bollocks metro mentions
Hundreds of people fled after Japan’s Shinmoedake volcano erupted, shattering windows 6km (four miles) away, as the nation struggles with the aftermath of a massive earthquake and tsunami.

Big difference between alive and simmering and erupting ?

yes people do live near the mount, granted not a hugely populated area.

    From Eruptions Blog:
WILLIAM GEORGE on March 15, 2011, 12:41 AM
    Hi there.

I live in Miyakonojo, which is within spitting distance of Shinmoe-Dake. I’ve been reading this blog since the eruptions started because it has proven to be a better resource for me to find out more about the volcano that most sites. Thanks for that.

However, that LA Times article which has been making the rounds about Sunday’s eruption is bunkum. The ash plume was very high in the sky. So high that the rain clouds were passing under it. Very little ash made it to the ground.

The final two paragraphs of the article refer to something that happed during the first week of erupting. The writer referred to the BBC. When I hunted that source down, it was from February first. Very sloppy work on the writer’s part.

If there was destruction and panic, everyone was over it in time to go to the mall the next day.

    :D:D

Meanwhile, unusual cold outbreak has moved all the way south into Vietnam and Thailand:

    http://www.uni-koeln.de/math-nat-fak/geomet/meteo/winfos/synNNWWfareast.gif

temperatures in Bangkok fell about ten degrees below their normal 28-30 C at this time of year, and from this map it is about 12-13 C in Hanoi where normal is about 24 C.

Is there any map that shows altitudes in Ireland (other than mountains)? For instance, which is the nearest land point to West Galway City of a minimum altitude of 65 feet above sea level?

Probably Parkmore, or the hills between Barna and Moycullen may be the best options.

JAPAN EARTHQUAKE SHOCK RECORDED IN DONEGAL
    March 17, 2011

THE SHEER size of the Japanese earthquake – the world’s biggest ever recorded – certainly hit home in Donegal….three local schools recorded it on special equipment.

Pupils at Magh Ene College in Bundoran, St Egney’s National School in Desertegney Inishowen and St Columba’s College in Stranorlar all recorded aftershocks on specialist equipment.

They are using the technology as part of a Seismology in Scools Project run by the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies and LYIT.

“It took about ten minutes for the shockwave to travel here,” said Dr Tom Blake of the Irish National Seismic Network.

“It arrived on our shores around 6am local time and it was so strong it continued to oscillate on our monitoring equipment. It recorded the actual shockwave of the Japan earthquake passing through Donegal.”

The equipment recorded actual small earthquakes in Donegal in January last year.

The eipicentre of the small quake was in Bridgend

At the time a number of people in the Inishowen and Fanad peninsulas reported hearing a loud bang similar to a thunderclap, followed by a tremor.

Some residents in the Desertegney area said it sounded like a rattle of thunder that seemed “to roll along Lough Swilly”. Others, in Kerrykeel and Milford, fled their homes until they realised the tremor posed no threat to their safety.

This graphic with data of the measured radiation at Fukushima during the past days (data of TEPCO) was published in Germany by GRS (Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit) and shown on TV.

Effectively there is no radiation worth a dam coming from Fukushima Dai-ichi

There were a few spikes that reached some 1,000mSv whereas the Chernobyl was gushing 10,000mSv and spiking 30,000 ~ 100,000mSv and sustained lethal doses for weeks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Harps

Yep the radiation readings at the moment are just from the released steam as far as I know, its got a very short half life so poses no real risk. As long as the reactor shells dont get damaged then everything will eventually be fine.

Latest news is that theyre getting the generators back online so should be able to cool the rods properly again. Great news if it all works out

Well at one point an expert did say on the news that the radiation was harmful , 15 minutes of exposure would enhance the chance of getting cancer later in life. I certainly wouldn't want to be in Japan right now.

seems they have to worry about Mount Fuji now too.

    link from RSOE EDIS

Japan that has not managed to recover after the first blow of natural disasters ( earthquakes and tsunamis) is risking to be overtaken by a new misery resulting from these disasters. Japanese Seismic Service has reported of a threat of its symbol, Fujiyama volcano’s eruption. The reasons for these assessments are recent 5-6 magnitude earthquakes on the volcano. The last time the volcano erupted was in 1707 when a new crater appeared on it and Tokyo streets ( named do at the time) were covered with 15 sm ash. Eruption of the national symbol will completely " smash" Japan which has just 2 days to stave off nuclear explosion at APS Fukushima affected by tsunami. So far Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) has increased the danger degree at wrecking Automatic power station Fukushima -1 till the 5th level out of 7 possible ones. International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) already considers wreckage at Japanese APS Fukushima-Daiichi the most serious one since Chernobyl catastrophe of 1986. Japanese government has already asked the USA for technical assistance to push aside wreckage on APS built under General Electric technology. At present it has been officially affirmed that another 6.200 people have become victims of Japanese earthquake on 11 March. Nearly 10.200 people are considered missing

@gbee and Harps I'm not sure of the amount of contamination but when somebody says to me that there is no reason to be concerned, then I'm sceptical.

The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics of Austria (ZAMG) has estimated today the emissions during the first four days at 20% of iodine-131 and 50% of cesium-137 of the total emission of the Chernobyl accident. http://www.zamg.ac.at/aktuell/index.php?seite=1&artikel=ZAMG_2011-03-22GMT13:31

A lot of aftershocks today and some of them quite large especially after they seemed to be declining in both frequency and magnitude.
