The centenary of his death occurs in a few day on 03 February 2011. Born in Dublin he moved to Britain and wrote a political book called the Ragged Troused Philantropists. This work influenced later writers such as Orwell and the kitchen-sink generation. He's widely respected in Britian and there are events over there marking his centenary. Sadly in Ireland nothing seems to be happening to mark the anniversary?

That this House notes the centenary of the death of Robert Noonan (Tressell) on 3 February 2011 interred in a pauper’s grave in Walton, Liverpool; recognises the significance of his seminal work, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists within the wider Labour movement; and applauds both the work of the Robert Tressell Society and the commemorative programme of events organised by Liverpool City Council to appropriately recognise his historical and literary importance.

Robert Tressell, author of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, the world-famous novel about working class life and struggles, died on 3 February 1911. His book has been published well over 150 times in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Russia, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Holland, Poland, Hungary, Turkey and Japan. It has sold millions of copies, many of which get passed from hand to hand, and currently there are three English editions in print.

Manchester Trades Union Council has organised an exhibition at the Working Class Movement Library in Salford to celebrate Tressell's life and work. It will include many documents from The Robert Tressell Family Papers, courtesy of the curator, Mr Reg Johnson, who is the grandson-in-law of the author. We are also negotiating with the TUC Library in London to show the original manuscript pages of 'The Great Money Trick', the mini-drama about how exploitation works.

The launch of the Tressell Centenary Exhibition will be at the Working Class Movement Library, 51 Crescent, Salford, M5 4WX, on 2 February 2011. This has to be by invitation only because of limitations on numbers; but visitors will be welcome between 1.00pm and 5.00pm, Wednesdays to Fridays, from 3 February until 10 March.

I tried to read the book years ago because I was working my way through the BBC's Big Read. It was one of a few I gave up on - couldn't get into it. I had no idea he was born in Ireland.

Here's a good account of his life. Think there's a plaque for him in Wexford St in Dublin?
