Batch weighing and sorting .22lr ammo

Has anyone got better group sizes by weighing their .22lr ammo and sorting them into different weights?

And then shooting the ammo by weight, or was the groups the same as if having not sorted their ammo. I'm not interested in rim thickness batching.

Something on similar lines - this chap is weighing his new brass cases and sorting them by weight to see if it gives any variation to his balistic performance.

    Clive.

Check out rimfirecentral.com, numerous threads over the years on the topic.

The general belief is that weighing/sorting .22 RF is a total utter waste of good time.

What is recommended is thorough ammo testing by manufacture and lots to determine which ammo shoots most accurately.

End of day, the accuracy you require depends on the type of shooting you are doing.

It's just in one benchrest competition I felt a low recoil, heard a lower sound and the bullet dropped into a 7 ring, from a tight 10/9 scores.
That lost me the match and put me into seconds palce.

clivej I think you will find an improvement in sorting bulk ammo , the manufacturing controls are less, and that is reflected in the price. Even something like SK+ can show some big weight differences I have only ever weighted 1 box and had to break it into 3 different weight groups the difference was that wide.
The higher grade CenX and RWS 50 are more weight consistent, and didn't require sorting.

What ammo did you use clive ?

I'm using SK standard plus in my K22 Xtrim, 10/22, and CZ 455 varmint now. And I have a couple bricks for the new rifle. I may batch weigh a few of these to see what difference there is.
And I have got 300 x SK Rifle Match, 200 x SK Pistol Match and 100 x Laupa Centre X to try in my new CZ 457.

Just waiting for the get-go to go to the range again.

clive, I was guessing you where using SK standard plus. I shoot sk+ a lot for practice but wont shoot them in comps. For the reason you have mentioned. I shoot them out of my rifle and my friend shoots them out of his pistol, you will def get a few low powered rounds in a box.
They are capable of one hole groups at 50m and like you said bang there's one low in the 7/8 scoring line.
And its always low you will never see one an inch high.

I suppose weighting them would weed out a light charge. A slightly different goal than weighting them to shoot in batches according to their weight. Weighting to discard rather than to batch.

like any batching your looking to find out what round /weight shoots best in your rifle. Finding a weight that shoots really consistent in your firearm is your goal. The other weight groups you sorted will also be more consistent but maybe not as tight.

It will be a great way for you to pass the day now clive during Covid sure what else would you be doing, hours of weighting wee small slippery .22bullets enjoy lol.

Been there Clive, Thats mainly down to QC or lack of in manufacturing process.

SK Std+ & SK FN Basic are bottom of SK ammo pile, next up is SK RM & SK FN Match.

SK RM & PM are better and should shoot better if your rifle likes it, some Anschutz rifles just love SK PM.

Don't forget to try some Eley Club, Team, Match and TenX and RWS R50 and RWS Special Match.

I hope the Clubs/Ranges open soon, lock-down a pain in rear end.

I did this as well as rim thickness, and overall height... I didn't notice any difference, in fact I ended up with so many different "batches" and half boxes that by the time I actually shot and tested groups, I didn't have enough of that batch to actually shoot a comp with haha.

Life's too short, don't let lockdown do this to you Clive!

Only time I ever went through my ammo in that kind of detail was at a competition abroad. My ammo had been handled pretty roughly in transit and a bunch of rounds had visible dings on the heads so I discarded them.

The rest of the time? My attitude has been that if you have the time to examine all your rounds in minute detail then you have time to be doing some more useful training.

The third vid in a series on sorting ammo. I don't know if his sample size is enough or not to take out the benefit of a couple of good groups skewing the results.
