    Since the last windows 10 update (yesterday) I have a large notice floating onto my screen telling me that Cortana is not available in my region. I am not looking for it, I don't want it, and apparently trying to get rid of it (the notice presumably) can cause major upsets in the OS.

    There is nothing clickable on the notice and in the list of start menu it only says how to put the cortana link into the taskbar, rate and review etc, not much use for something not available.

    Apparently it used be easily possible to switch it off but now the amazing new helpful update has taken that facility away, while floating an ad across the screen at frequent intervals.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you, yes I saw that, but other investigation seemed to suggest that that approach could do damage. It looks like we are stuck with it till they get enough complaints that they do a fix.

    I was more irritated with Windows' endless meddling and control of computers, I can just keep cancelling it when it pops up. The braindeadness of having a persistent popup to tell you you don't have access to something is ridiculous though.

    What "damage" ? Can you link source?

    I have it disabled for years and so far cant see negative effects.

    I think the point is that this is new and a new approach to it being there rather than removeable as it used be.

    All these links suggest it could cause issues trying to remove it. I would rather not fiddle since I am not very tecky, but I do have someone who might look at it for me once the shut down is sorted.

    My region is set as Ireland and I am confident I don't have a virus, my laptop is well protected and scans regularly.

    Both links give proper instruction how to disable it. Both warn you to be careful if editing registry - standard warning, don't mess in there.

    Older article, the one from 2017, mention potential issue with search -that was resolved.
