Making trees bush out on top

    Hi there,
I have some portugese laurel and holly trees approx 2.5 metres tall in my back garden. I want to make them stronger and wider on top for increased screening. Would pruning them right in at trunk base up to 1 meter be an option to make them bush out on top?
    Thanks in advance

Treat them as a hedge - trim off the tops and front and back so they grow more branches and become thicker. Even though you are apparently making the bush screening area smaller, in the long run (couple of years) you will have thicker, bushier plants. Taking off the lower branches will give a tree effect, but will not, I think, make much difference to the top.
