    From here:
Bus Éireann is encouraging people to try its Expressway inter-city coach services with a special on-line offer of €5 for a single ticket. Customers can travel on 16 Expressway inter-city services such as Dublin-Cork, Dublin-Galway, Limerick-Galway and Dublin-Donegal for just €5 one way off-peak from 6 August until 31 October 2013.

Bus Éireann’s Expressway services provide high quality, direct, regular coach services from destinations across the country. All Expressway services offer free Wi-fi and last year the company added 28 new coaches to its Expressway fleet with features such as extra comfort seats and charging points at selected seats.

Many Expressway services use the new motorway network to provide fast coach connections between major locations. For instance, Route 2 Wexford-Dublin city has a journey time of just 2 hours 20 minutes, while Route X51 Galway-Limerick takes just 1 hour 20 minutes.

This special price offer is only available to purchase online at www.buseireann.ie/expressway and is for travel on scheduled departures between 10am and 3pm end-to-end only every day of the week.

“This is a great value offer as you can travel to major destinations throughout the country on a high quality coach service for just €5,” said Andrew McLindon, PR Manager, Bus Éireann.

This €5 one-way off-peak special offer is available on the following routes:
    • 2 Wexford-Dublin
    • 4 Waterford-Dublin
    • 7 Dublin-Clonmel
    • 8/X8 Dublin-Cork
    • 2/X12 Dublin-Limerick
    • 13 Limerick-Tralee
    • 20/X20 Dublin-Galway
    • 22 Dublin - Ballina
    • 23 Dublin-Sligo
    • 30 Dublin-Donegal
    • 32Dublin-Letterkenny
    • 40 Cork-Tralee
    • X51 Limerick-Galway
    • 51 Cork-Limerick
    • 55 Limerick-Waterford
    • 64 Galway-Sligo
Terms and conditions apply and this offer is subject to availability.
The interesting thing is that the link www.buseireann.ie/expressway re-directs to a brand new site BusEireannExpressway.com.

What is this about? The first steps in Expressway privitisation? An attempt to take on the existing privates?

    An interesting development, IMO.

Sounds to me more like a way of differentiating their commuter business from national routes.

If one proceeds to book and pay for these fantastic value tickets they will be booted back to the main site at https://ecommerce.buseireann.ie/EurolinesPublic/EurolinesPublicWebApp/nationalResSelectService.aspx?

So maybe not steps towards privatisation or anything else but just a handy way to keep track of the numbers availing of the cheap fares?

These €5 fares beat Irish Rails summer sale back to the stone age as well as providing serious competition for the likes of Aircoach GoBus and CityLink with €10 return fares possible between Dublin and Cork galway, Limerick, Waterford etc.

This €5 one-way off-peak special offer is available on the following routes:

    2 Wexford-Dublin
    4 Waterford-Dublin
    7 Dublin-Clonmel
    8/X8 Dublin-Cork
    2/X12 Dublin-Limerick
    13 Limerick-Tralee
    20/X20 Dublin-Galway
    22 Dublin - Ballina
    23 Dublin-Sligo
    30 Dublin-Donegal
    32Dublin-Letterkenny
    40 Cork-Tralee
    X51 Limerick-Galway
    51 Cork-Limerick
    55 Limerick-Waterford
    64 Galway-Sligo

Strangely the five euro fare doesn't appear to apply to intermediate stops

That is clearly stated in the promotion. It says end-to-end.

Amazing how little you can charge when you get a fleet of €300,000 buses for free and the taxpayer picks up the bill for the losses at the end of the year.

The new Expressway vehicles were bought out of BE's own funds to be fair.

The buses on the city and urban operations were bought by the taxpayer.

There are obvious commercial reasons for it being end to end only.

Bus Eireann Expressway buses are not funded for free, they are funded by the company itself. The taxpayer does not pick up the bill for commercial routes.

Given the promotion runs between 10am and 3pm each day and applies to end to end journeys only, it would have a reasonably limited application.

I stand corrected it would appear.

Yes I saw that, that's why I posted. On the Wexford route most of Wexford bus's gains from BE have been outside of Wexford town, this would have been an ideal opportunity to try and win some of them back.

one of these days the people in the "flyover" (so to speak) bits of Ireland are going to wonder when and by whom it was decided they were going to be 2nd class citizens public transport wise, not merely in the move to express services but also in that they pay more on board.

Also unfair for those in Carlow on the Waterford-Dublin bus

Just buy the ticket to Waterford and get off at Carlow, the driver won't check tickets when you get off and TBH I don't think they will care anyway.

on a single ticket he wont

try using a dublin-waterford ticket getting on at carlow

These new €5 tickets are causing problems in carlow and other intermediate towns as people trying to get to the airport are being left behind because buses are full of cheap seat day teippers.

As good as this offer is, I think I'll still fork out the extra €12 to travel on GoBÉ the next time I'm popping down to Cork.

I think this offer will only re-affirm people's belief that the bus is slow and uncomfortable. Imagine a new customer attracted by this offer to the X8 service. They'll discover a slow, toiletless and limited legroom service that's frequently delayed by 30 to 40mins, and they'll be back to IÉ or the non-stop bus operators next week!

    Well, this is interesting.

www.buseireann.ie/expressway still directs to BusEireannExpressway.com, but that site seems to be owned/run by some crowd called "Ann B Auto Inc" from Texas, who write articles about cars.

Their twitter feed is here. What's interesting is that on their twitter feed, their website address is given as buseireannexpressway.com - seems kind of an odd choice for a website name. I get that buseireannexpressway.com must have lapsed, because on the Bus Eireann site itself, their expressway logo now links to ExpressWay.ie.
