In the middle of a lovely, light read: Julie Klassen's "The Girl in the Gatehouse."

The author (from the gentle viewpoint of the leading character) is adept at persuading the reader to empathise with (and cheer on) the entire cast of characters; the way she portrays the poorhouse inmates is especially heartwarming.
