Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Something I am planning to do myself in the next couple of years.

The one that I've known about the longest and seen in many documentaries is Roger Hill's Silver Lining Tours. http://www.silverliningtours.com/

Would it be alot cheaper to get flights over , rent a car , bring your laptop and get a three week trial mobile broadband over there to view information , stay in motels on the way , away ya go. Split the cost between 3 or 4 , prob 5 time cheaper than going with a tour:D.

Prob not the safest at all now, but sure ya win some ya lose some;)

haha, ye wouldnt think it would be so safe to do, considering the fact that i cant drive! ha

....PS, anyone want to go to america for a "road trip" ? :D

Is there any chance of organising a boards.ie weather forum tour?

But heres the clever bit, we use any advertisement revenue boards gets from the weather forum to pay for it! That way we all get to go for free which is fair because we generate that revenue for them anyway.:D:D:D:D

    OH I WISH.....

    Anyone going chasing this year?

Just noticed on the Netweather stormchasing page, 5 places available for a 10 day stormchasing tour with Michael Fish!

Expensive but I'd love to go on that.

Ian am I right in thinking the stg £1700 does not include flights from dublin or London to Dallas [Dfw] so the likely cost in euro is probably around €2500 [in Euro] for that one.
Have they suggested particular flights that everyone going on have to book? British airways?

Hey BB , ye it's only the cost for the tour and accomadation when on the road over there.
Wit the sale price €2500 would be around it ye depending on flights, u don't hav to pick any particular airline. Like Aer lingus to return flights from Dublin to Dallas ( including a stop over ) for 600 or so , it's been changing a bit in the last few weeks . But as I'm goin new jersey afterwards I'm booking through BA as they incorporate American airlines in ther flights. So for 3 sets of flights I'm gettin quotes of €900 and that's without sales.

So ye ... I'm hoping that'll go down a but more. Any more questions feel free to ask.
Or even email Paul from net weather. The email is on ther page. He'll get back to ya within the day usually :)

Don't forget BA have a sale on at the moment
£409 from heathrow to Dallas fort worth and you could tag in an aer lingus separately onto that for €40 in the aer lingus sale at the moment.
The only down side to doing it that cheap way is they won't interline the baggage for you.
However if you book through a travel agent, they may be able to put both sale fares on the one pnr [passenger numerical record] for you as one booking ,meaning you wave bye to your baggage in Dublin, 'till you land at dfw.
    Lhr-dfw is non stop.

Virgin also have a sale on at the moment.

    Yes I'm very tempted.

Don't worry about MF though-you might have seen very little of him on Tour 4 I'd say as he'll be molly coddled and in a lead car.

How many are in the group?

Ah cool, well my friend is a travel agent so she's gonna look into it all for me to figure out a good way of doin it. Non stop from London would be great.

Eh for tour 3 there's 3 chase cars , so that's 2 guests in each car along wit 2 team members for drivin and navigating .

I haven't met any of them yet only talked to them on the chase forum over on net weather. But they all seem like a great bunch of lads. So ye.. Tour 3 all the way ! :)

Ah that's mad , BB is right tough it's not like ther gonna be out there to interview me!! Haha

And ye , I need to get some practice wit the new camera! There's loads of things it can do including 40 pictures per second ( lightning! :) ) , but ye it's gonna be hard to decide when to take pictures or video !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

Here's a link to their video highlights of last year.. http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=storm-chase-highlights;sess=
They Should be alot better this summer as more of us should have HD cameras! :)
They also have a live streaming link on the page , for when we are over there ( dunno how the internet speed is that good in the plains ) . :)

OH and i was talking to Mark over on IWO , he said he'll try set up a section for a daily blog of some sort for mise on the site Come closer to the time.

So ye!, u's be in on the action dont worry! :)

Netweather Storm Chasing - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are you experienced, what special equipment do you use?
A: The tours are lead by Paul Sherman, a very experienced chaser with a track record of putting his teams in the best location possible for viewing storms and tornadoes safely - his enthusiasm and knowledge for storms will blow you away!

We have all the latest equipment within our chase vehicles, including mobile internet, satellite based Wxworks Mobile ThreatNet and GPS positioning so we always have the most up to date weather data available to us to ensure we keep you safe and give you the best view of the action possible.

Q: What will the overall cost be?
A: The basic cost of the tour is £1700, this includes your accomodation - (this is for a shared room with one other chaser, single rooms are available at a supplement of £350 on a first come, first served basis) , travel once in the chase area and services of our team. The price does not include flights to Dallas Fort Worth (usually costing around £400-500 return), meals (which offer excellent value in the USA) and incidentals such as souvenirs. For more information about the likely final cost to you, please feel free to contact us.

Q: What if the weather is quiet?
A: Occasionally it does happen, mother nature doesn't play ball and there is a lack of storm activity. Fortunately the chasing area of the Mid-West in the USA is an amazing place and there will be opportunity to visit national parks and beauty spots, or we may decide a positioning day is needed to get the team into the right area for any upcoming severe weather.

We also have a very good record of getting on storms even when the opportunities are limited - on tour 4 in 2009 there was a fairly quiet spell of weather but we managed to get on a storm on every single day of the tour whilst many other tour companies were sightseeing or sunbathing!

Q: What type of accomodation will I be staying in?
A: The hotels we use are all good quality, generally branded (such as Holiday Inn, Best Western or Super 8), so you can be assured of a comfortable nights sleep in each location, often with additional facilities such as hot-tubs and gyms available for you to use as well.

    Q: Is storm chasing dangerous?
A: Severe storms are inherently dangerous, but with the use of technology and experience we do minimise the risks to you, and no storm chaser has been killed by storm or tornado in the USA for over 30 years!

The greatest risk to the chaser is the roads, so we always advise extreme care when outside the chase vehicle, and will brief you on the various safety rules and guidelines that we have in place, both prior to and during your tour.

Q: Where do we fly in to and where exactly do we chase?
A: The base airport for our chases is Dallas Fort Worth, we will pick you up here at the start of your tour and drop you off here at the end. During the chase itself we can cover a number of US states including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and New Mexico. In short - we'll go wherever the storms are!

Q: What chase vehicles do you use?
A: The vehicles we use are generally full size SUV's with a maximum of 5 passengers in each, so they're comfortable and spacious, but also intimate enough for everyone to be able to get to know eachother and have good contact with our team members. We have a maximum of 3 vehicles per tour.
