Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know some lads that have sworn not alone to invade but they plan on taking a bit of a souvenir of the occasion.

    .

When Kildare won leinster in 98 i remember during the pitch invasion we met the neighbour digging up a piece of turf. He brought it home and patched it into the garden :p

Did much the same myself after Wexford won the All-Ireland in '96. Took a patch of grass from the Hill 16 end, from the approximate spot where Tom Dempsey scored the Wexford goal from. Put it in a flower pot at home and gave it the occasional trimming with a scissors, until it eventually died off after going too long without watering when I got lazy about it.

Mícheál Ó Sé commentating on the minor semi finals and finals on RTE, I don't have much Irish but there was something soothing about his voice.

Some of us are old enough to remember Mìcheàl O' Muircheartaigh doing it, I think he stopped around the mid eighties.

Speaking of Ó Muircheartaigh, was watching the 1980 hurling final earlier in the week and there was a chap the image of him in the Limerick dug out!

    Surely not himself?

I know he was involved with the Dublin based Kerry footballers at the time, but never heard of any involvement with a hurling county team.

Following a nostalgic conversation with a few mates over the weekend, what are things you don't see or rarely see in the modern games of hurling/football anymore

    - Fog-horns/flags at matches
    - "AN other" on the match programme
    - The good old traditional tough ball winning full back in football. Packed defences have completely changed the position
    - The third midfielder. While still in operation it was all the rage for a while, in the days before short kickouts, when teams wanted to pack the middle with ball winners for kickouts.
    - There was much less accessibility to players. Nowadays people can nearly track their every move on social media.
    - Fans getting jerseys signed - mainly selfies now

Stuck in traffic for hours before and after the game.. used to love that

Same here, there was just something about those minor games when he was doing it on RTÉ.

Paper hats in county colours......last seen in late 70's, early 80's

An uncle of mine wore one of them on a really wet day. He even had it in the pub that evening. Got up the next morning and realised his hair was bright green from the dye :)
This was back when Meath were regulars in Croke Park:(

    The knockout system.

We'd be crying as kids coming home in the car if Tipp lost the first round in Munster. That was it , the end of your summer.

You'd be so nervous before those games.

Football is only good from semi final onwards though.

Some great hurling matches in the provincials.

TV ratings in 2018 decided that one pal.

People weren’t tuning into watch the provincials in football as much as the Hurling so I’d say you won’t see much football anymore bar the few super 8s onwards.

Tier 2 will help the GAA in that regard even less football to show.

Whenever I smell smoke I always think of the terraces of Casement Park in the early 2000s when I was a boy. I wonder when smoking was banned at games.

Voicerous cork supporters who commentated as if on radio from the stands and were as impartial as Borris Johnston/Da Donald......to a young lad listening they gave the impression they invented the game and knew everything about it......apart from any of the opposition players names.......this type of corkonian is no longer about as they have realized there actually are other counties as good as them and some even better....a couple of all Ireland’s though and they won’t be long coming back to annoys us again...!

Letting people know in advance what the National League Fixtures are. Given that its now been months since the provisional fixtures were agreed and there's still no announcement, are we just expected to show up on the day and hope your team is playing at home? Hopefully they have the good grace to at least inform the teams involved

    most counties know their schedule

Then why can't they confirm and release the full schedule to the general public? They're usually out ages at this stage

Is it actually illegal? Im guessing it probably is but certainly hasnt stopped it. As an ex smoker myself ive no issue with it on the terraces, in a covered stand, not so nice

Regarding smoking, I think it was 1987 or '88. David Beggy having a fag on the steps on the way up to collect his All-Ireland medal.

Smoking is much more a taboo nowadays so obviously GAA players won't be seen doing it openly, but there's probably still an odd player even at the top level that has a crafty one or two after a game!

You'd have a lot more after a game out drinking.
