have a load of svhs tapes of my kids and family.can anyone give me advice on what i need to buy for my computer so that i can transfer them to cd so that i can watch them on a dvd player:confused:

A TV card will allow you to digitise the footage, through an S-Video cable.

From there, use your regular CD/DVD burning software to make the VCD/SVCD or DVD.
