Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Space - Would you go if you got the chance?

Imagine... you've been randomly selected (even if you didn't enter...) to go on a Space trip to the International Space Station for 3 months.
You'll be given basic training, but your job is just to report back on the NASA social media pages of your trip - other astronauts will shadow you and ensure all is ok.
The invite has been privately communicated to you, so you can accept or you can decline and no one will ever know it was offered to you.

    Would you do it?
Would the thoughts of being in a confined unit away from Earth freak you out?
Would you just do it for the fame and try to live off any following income like books / appearances?
Or would you politely decline, and leave it to a true Space nut to go?

I'd be very wary, if anything probably scared, but would try and force myself to go. I think it would be an opportunity I simply couldn't turn down.

I would prefer Mars tbh, the ISS is cool though.

Na I'd miss the porn on Earth. F*ck that.

Sign me up to see Mars. The fact it will most likely be a one way trip would not bother me.

3 hours on the ISS would be incredibly boring, never mind 3 months. Once you've gotten over initial buzz (which would be pretty immense) there'd be very little to do.

It's cheaper and more fun to drop some acid and go to the planetarium.

    Feck all atmosphere.

Jokes like this seriously undermine the gravity of the question

I presume the ISS has a full bar?

Three months, no way. Couldn't do it. I reckon I have whatever the opposite of claustrophobia is, I just cannot stand being confined in controlled enclosed spaces for long periods of time. It would kill me to be stuck in one small environment for so long, without being able to get out and physically distance myself from it. Kind of ironic that I'd feel so enclosed when out in space, but realistically, that's what it would be like. Very boring. And very enclosed. I'd probably actually go proper bat**** crazy.

    Weightless I'd imagine! :P

Seriously though, it would be an unpaid position. Your current employers allows you paid leave however.
If you're shrewd enough, you could probably do well from a whole rake of financial possibilities on your return.

No booze, in case you get airlocked.

That was my own fear piggy!
It would really be a battle to overcome it. I guess I wasn't sure if many others shared the same or would everyone just go 'hell yeah!! sign me up!

Thought someone would've picked up on that before now... that sentence had me boggled for a minute.

Isn't claustrophobia where you want to stay inside in one place all the time? That's what I don't like!

I'd happily sit by the window looking down at the earth for three months. What an experience.

Sounds like agoraphobia. Claustrophobia is the fear of confined spaces.

OK it's claustrophobia I have then. So yeah, no space trip for me, thanks! :)

Before anyone goes into space, they should probably read Mary Roach's book 'Packing for mars.'

Space is a smelly smelly place

You'd want to get on really well with your fellow travellers in space. I think I'm too introverted to spend that much time in close quarters with other people all the time.

If it wasn't for that, I'd be off. I'm single and have no dependents and I love adventure.

Oh oh. The risk of ending up in space with someone you dont like is enough to put me off.

If you kill someone in space -which jurisdiction is that under? Do US laws count up there?

I suppose it's like airplanes in international airspace, whoever owns the plane gets to enforce their laws.

    But still remember....

In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream....

Definitely, I'd say the experience would be out of this world.

I suffer from motion sickness so no weightlessness for me.
Ditto if they ever have suborbital aircraft for commercial aviation.

Eh? Didn't you ever see that Star Trek episode with Jim Kirk banging that cracking green bird? Even William Riker and Picard got it on with the odd Klingon, etc.

Leave your inhibitions back in the suburbs, baby! There's an entire universe of space porn out there for ya!

On the ISS only the Russians have guns, you know for the bears and wolves.

One of my previous colleagues went into space as a spaceshuttle payload specialist.
It looked super cool on his resume :)

I wouldn't fancy a whole three months of that. It would have to be feb-april for starters.
