Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Was the minutes silence also in respect of the 80+ victims in Pakistan?

The minutes silence was observed because there was 2 Australians killed in the attack, thats my understanding of it anyway.

Sweden vs France looks a decent fixture and just kicked off on Sky Sports 1. It's second vs first in Group A. Team news:
Sweden XI: Olsen; Lustig, Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson; Durmaz, Johansson, Ekdal, Forsberg; Berg, Toivonen

France XI: Lloris; Sidibe, Varane, Koscielny, Mendy; Pogba, Matuidi; Sissoko, Greizmann, Payet; Giroud

Amazing talent on the French bench: Mbappe, Kante, Lacazette, Dembele, Lemar, to name but a few.

Giroud just scored a beauty to make it 1-0 France. Great strike.

Group A would have been a hell of a group in the past. Sweden, Bulgaria, Holland ain't what they used to be. Even France have been better.

Fantastic win for Andorra tonight. Hard to imagine that Hungary drew with Portugal and beat Austria in the Euros last year.

Just the 2 and a assist for CR7 tonight in a 3-0 win away at Latvia.

All the headlines about Lloris, naturally, but what a win for Sweden, and more notably, The Netherlands in serious danger now of not even making a playoff, let alone the fact that they are could easily miss a consecutive tournament (Euros and WC) for, what I think is the first time in 50 years since years of Total Football?
    Open to correction?

Netherlands have France game next (Sweden have played French twice already now so have everything in their hands) and they don't have Sweden until last game so if they aren't out of contention by then, that could be an epic encounter

Dutch football, even with some quality players still there, seems to be in a frustrating state.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,584 ✭✭✭Rekop dog

Pretty embarrassing for France to not be top of this group. Don't think it's an exaggeration to say that even their 3rd strength team would be better than Sweden's 1st.

  • Registered Users Posts: 489 ✭✭R00ster

Are we witnessing the golden age of Andorran football? Three games unbeaten: Beat San Marino 2-0, drew 0-0 with the Faroes, and the win over Hungary tonight. :D Nice to see that the bloke who scored against us in 2001 (Lima) is still playing for them. Record goal scorer of 11 of their all-time total of 40.

Huge missed opportunity for Bulgaria tonight. Hopefully France can win that group. If Ireland are to end up in the playoffs, one out of Spain or Italy will be there as well.

Shame Gibraltar couldn't hold on for the draw against Cyprus.

I personally think the future looks promising, it looks like they are finally bringing some of them through. So while yes they miss this world cup they could easily be big again by next euros

falling down the FIFA rankings ever more though, 32nd (31st after today maybe though -worst ever ranking) so always going to get tough qualifying groups, at least for the next couple of tournaments if they don't qualify for next year. Behind teams like Peru, Egypt, Costa Rica, Northern Ireland and Iran...........oh, and Ireland!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,900 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

The playoffs could be a nightmare if were there, the following teams may be there

    Italy or Spain
    Holland/Sweden or France
    Switzerland or Portugal
    Iceland or Croatia
    Northern Ireland or Czech Republic
    Scotland/Slovakia or Slovenia
    Greece or Bosnia
    Denmark /Montenegro or Romania

Was thinking that. The cops asked them to leave and they just walked to far post. Was like they were trying to wind them up.

Edit: Just realised it was an away game for Hungary. They'd be vilified if they hadn't thanked the travelling support. Also explains why the cops looked so lost. I'd imagine Hungarian police would have just waded in to them.

A Scotland win would have the vultures out for Southgate and he is only in the job a wet day.

The English media and the hype they create is to the detriment of anything the national team do. They usually get a handy qualifying group which they walk, the media blows them up as if they are the best in the world to which the team duly remind everyone that is not the case, then the media go after the manager and the wheel just keeps spinning. You would think after all the false dawns and supposed golden generations they would just shut up and let the team get on with it.

I seen one of the media outlets (BBC, iirc) has mentioned how the under 20s could be the new golden generation :D seriously tho they are delusional over there.

Are they, delusional that is ?

What's wrong with getting excited about your u 20s being in a WC final, beating Argentina and Italy on the way ?

This country wet itself in 1998 when our youth teams were in similar positions.

Yes, yes they are and they are because they create this notion they are going to be world beaters because of a few favourable results. These guys are too young for any type of media exposure and hyping them up at this stage is not good for them.

The last England team to make the under 20's world cup semi final was in 1993 and only Nicky Butt & Nick Barmby went on to play any senior games from that squad.

There are some talented young players in the group but hardly a golden generation.

Scotland vs England teams are in. The game will be live on TV3 and Sky Sports 1.
Scotland XI: Gordon, Tierney, Berra, Mulgrew, Robertson, Brown, Morrison, Anya, Armstrong, Snodgrass, Griffiths.

England XI: Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Bertrand, Dier, Livermore, Lallana, Alli, Rashford, Kane.

I can't see Scotland getting anything from this game if England are mentally up for it. I would expect an England win by at least two goals.

A humiliating scoreline would surely mean the end of Strachan's time in charge.

Id prefer TV3 (bar the constant ads) to ITV as ITV's coverage is bland but ill have to stick to ITV as the picture quality on TV3 is ****e. Poor choice all round :D

Well it is the oldest fixture in international football, so although it doesn't mean much in grand scheme of things, it is a historic fixture
