Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Best War Movie EVER - Boardsies Decide

    I'm baaaaaack :D

    And this time in this lovely corner of Boards I bring to you another tournament of epic proportions.

    We've already had:

    Best Movie Ever as decided by Boardsies: (Goodfellas)

    Best Horror Movie Ever as decided by Boardsies: (The Lost Boys)


    So let's go for the hat-trick!


    What is the best War Movie you have ever seen? Can you compromise with other Boardsies and come together to vote for favourite ones? Let's find out, shall we :D


    So from the original game, how it works, with a couple of tweaks:
    • PM me your top 5 WAR movies in no particular order
    • We'll leave it open for about 10 days (Let's say Monday, 23rd September)
    • I'll collate the movies, sort by popularity, and those with the most votes will automatically go into the first round proper. The others... well let's do things a little different than before...
    • Instead of eliminating movies like I did in the last contest, what I will do instead is match up the unseeded movies in battle royale type matches. They will fight it out in a first to 5 votes scenario with the winner advancing to the first round proper.
    • Then we'll open up for the first round proper, two films fight it out. With a tennis scoring system: the first to 6 votes with two clear points ahead. Give reasons for your choice too, just to make it a bit interesting. No time limit, just the first to 6.
    • The winner goes to the next round, and repeat with the next two until we've halved the number
    • Depending on popularity of the contest (he says hopefully) Quarter Finals will be first to 8, Semis first to 10, Final first to 12, until eventually we have a winner, and the arguments can begin.
    • I'll try to seed the most popular movies (ie those submitted with the most votes) mentioned in the knock-out so we're not starting out with #1 and #2 the top rated movies from the get go.

    And... away we go!!

    BTW is a War movie any movie set during a war, even if there is no fighting? eg If Diary of Anne Franke was a movie, would it count?

    I'm leaving that open to the entrants interpretation but yeah in my own humble opinion your example would be fine to nominate.

    I think, if you think it's a war movie, then enter it. If we all agreed what a war movie was then what would be the fun of the reveal, without the arguments about what constitutes a war movie?

    That's what happens when there are too many good options.

    Very hard to nail down a top 5.
    Could easily have made a top 20 and still left out some great movies

    It will be interesting to see how many movies I haven't watched yet or ever heard of, so I'm looking forward to it from that point of view:)

    Shoots, I forgot about Anthropoid, which other than hearing Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan butcher the Czech accent, it was a great movie about the build up to the assassination of the Butcher of Prague. Ah well.

    Thanks for all the entries so far. I'm definitely going to do a round of 64 with these. Not quite there movie wise yet (57 individual movies submitted so far). In the event I don't hit 64 I'll quite happily take further suggestions via PM and randomise them to add them to list. Otherwise I'll supplement from those not selected that are highest ranked and not already submitted from the war movie listings on IMDB.

    Thanks for all the suggestions and the entries today folks :)

    Pleased to announce we are nearing our quota. With that in mind I'll be closing off sign ups tomorrow evening, so if you want to put some nominations in, or indeed give me some more suggestions you have until 6pm tomorrow :D

    Aiming to get some of the first round out and for your voting pleasure then around Friday lunchtime :) This will take a few days at the very least I'm expecting.

    Numbers well and truly made up, but keep em coming in till tomorrow morning anyways :)

    Will likely be a few battle royales in the last 64 between multiple movies with only one nomination each (chosen via random selection).

    This is due to my determination not to leave any movies out that have been suggested :D
