Hi, I have a Sierra / Pye 9123 model Reel to Reel tape recorder. There's a mains voltage switch (grey, circular, on the bottom left in photo) with 4 positions (from 110v to 220v). The switch was inadvertently set to 110V when the machine was last powered up resulting in smoke emanating from the area where in the first of two transformers is located. The switch was reset to 220V. but the machine won't power up, Please see the attached photo. The transformer on the left is the first encountered after the Voltage variation switch. The second transformer is off to the (bottom) right in the photo.

Question: What is the likelihood that replacing just the first transformer could fix the machine? If so, would it be possible to source a replacement (the machine dates from the early 70s.) ? If not, would bypassing the first transformer and permanently setting the switch to 220V , or removing it solve the problem. A photograph of the wiring scheme is also attached.

Is it possible that damage could be confined to just the first transformer?

    Any assistance would be appreciated

Most of these transformers are custom made, so hard the replace. It may be ok and the problem is with the bridge rectifier, fuse, regulator etc etc.
BTW the 'transformer' on the bottom right looks more like the motor.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Many thanks Tow. Is the fuse you refer to that in the mains plug or is there another one internal in the machine?

    Hi Boarder1,

You'd likely get a better response to your question if you post it in "Headphones and Portable Audio Devices" https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=624

as this forum is for ham radio and amateur radio experiementing - not consumer audio devices. If you as a mod nicely they will move the question(s) over to that forum.

    Good luck with the question!
