Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've noticed some electronic type readers (or at least I think that's what they are) have gone up at Clonsilla train station entrances (similar to those Smartcard units at Luas stops). Does anyone know what they actually are and how they will function Are Irish Rail introducing similar smartcards to Luas?Apologies if this was included in another thread elsewhere.

There was a thread on it somewhere. Yes, they are Smart card readers, I think the idea is to use them when the stations are closed, they all seem to be near the night time entrance / exit.

I think Irish rail will have their own smart card system first, then eventually, there will be one smart card for all three operators.

Do not confuse this with a good smart card system like Oyster in London. Speculation leads us to think you'll still have to pay for each journey you use.

There are no agreements yet on integrated fares. Irish Rail will roll out their own smart card tickets at the end of the summer on selected tickets just like Dublin Bus have done.

Then early next year Dublin Bus and the RPA will produce one single smart card with an electronic purse just like the current 'top up' Luas smart card.

By the end of next year they reckon that Irish Rail, Bus Eireann and some private operators will have come on board and there will be one electronic purse smart card that can be used on all systems. The fares at that stage will each be deducted individually and shall not be integrated.

The powers that be will then rub their hands and pat eachother on the back at how they, on time and under budget, brought Ireland into the 21st century.

Smart cards but not so smart fares.

Seriously what is all the trouble about? The State owns each of these companies. Someone tell them "this is the way its happening" and get it over with. TFL were able to dictate to a hoard of squabbling private companies - why can't transport get the finger out and bash heads in companies under public ownership?????

Some of the guys on RUI who are involved in the trial said it was delayed because of the track collapse between Malahide and Donnabate.

surely someone was just being sarcastic..... why would it have any effect with the amount of staff they have, the smartcard project should have been well on the way when that happened.

That's what I said :) Apparently they want to test some zone interfaces around Donnabate and have decided to wait. It don't seem like a good reason to me but god knows what thinking goes on inside IR.
