    Wexford City. Sounds lovely

    Was just going say that.

Far enough from Dublin for it not to fall into the satellite town category.

A currently under-utilised International port Rosslare only ten minutes away that could explode into life with proper transport planning.

Two motorways in relatively close proximity.

Already a good sized town with modern amenities, good nightlife and decent accommodation. Nice vista around the promenade, bridge.

National Opera House and a good reputation for the arts scene.

The scope to expand into the hinterland.

Literally can't see any downsides to this Wexford-Rosslare utopia, bar maybe its distance from an airport.

I like the Wexford Rosslare idea too. Its probably one of the more charming towns on the island, not that is has much competition, but it is pretty nice.

I don't think you understand how American cities work. Any village, town or city can hold a plebicite and decide to become a city. They do it for solid reasons though, not because of the "prestige" of being a city. It lets them elect a city government, levy taxes on employers and employees and set new laws. It lets them set up police and fire departments which they have to pay for themselves (out of the new taxes that they levy).

Thanks, but I knew that already.

Apparently Newry was designated a "city" about 17 years ago. Such bullshít. Rather than vacuous eejits going around seeking city status for their urban area, they could focus on putting their energies into regenerating them. Drogheda's a perfect case. It has a fantastic history that is very well recorded but still, in 2019, it has all these ugly remnants of 19th century industrialisation making large sections of the place overshadow that medieval history. Shop fronts, clean streets, paint jobs, massive education and tourism campaign promoting that history - all that stuff needs to be done. It has the Fleadh Cheoil starting there next Sunday so those 300,000 visitors will greatly boost the town. But Drogheda is a town; time to make it a great, cultural urban centre. Forget this narcissistic "city status" crap.

At any rate, the last thing the east coast needs is the development of a major urban area. Ireland's population and economic centres need to be spread more evenly. Athlone, in the centre, would seem like a good place to build up and thus relieve the pressure on Dublin. Large swathes of towns in the West are quite simply dead and younger people in Dublin or abroad. And the ongoing lack of a train service from Dublin to Derry/Donegal is inexcusable.
