    How do folk do this?

    I see home kits - http://safewater.ie/product/10-in-1-water-test-kit/

    Lab kits - https://drinkingwater.fitzsci.ie/

    Are home kits reliable?

Do the county council's do it at all?
You are best to go to an accredited laboratory. The HSE also carry out testing

The cost of running and maintaining scientific instruments plus getting accreditation is very expensive.

When I had it done, they sent someone to the house to collect the sample so you are paying for that plus the lab time, materials and administration.
