It looks pretty bad. I'll be tuning in though, I still miss Peep Show.

    Loved this... some superb lines!

    "Vinyl's making a comeback"
    "Yeah, for c*nts!"

Webb's character has dialed up the sociopath to 11. He's unnerving!

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Wasn't blown away...but then again, probably still stuck thinking of them as Mark and Jez, writing on eyelids in permanent marker, urinating in the choir stall of a church before a wedding, and eating the leg of a burnt dog...will give it another few episodes.

    Ya it's a bit tired

Didn't work for me either, it's a lot less edgy than what we have come to expect from them. Felt like a generic family sitcom to me.

    I liked it.

    "Vinyl's making a comeback..."
    "Yeah, for c**ts"

...was a definite highlight. As was the Bluetooth porn scene, even though it was really obvious. Geoffrey McGivern is always good.

Ok After episode 3 I've decided that it's just Peep Show out in the countryside.

^ Not finding it as consistently funny as Peep Show, but it's good!

Just watched the first 5 episodes of this in a row and it's great. First episode is a bit slow, but after that it's really funny, particularly any scenes with Geoff (I was in stitches when he showed up to confront the dog kidnapper). Also love the incredibly certain priest ("Is he in hell?", "Oh yes"). Nice to see Garth Marenghi back on screen again too.

It is quite similar to Peep Show despite the different writer. David Mitchell only really does one character, but if you've been watching the terrible Upstart Crow you'll see that that character isn't necessarily funny.

I dunno, too much Peep Show b-side for my liking. If one of the guys was in it, they might have gotten away with it. With both it was just too alike but never as good.

Is Upstart Crow really bad? I was going to start watching it.

Upstart is great, let no one let you otherwise. It helps if you are familair with the Bards output and the whole "did he even write half of it anyway" debate.

As for Back, very enjoyable the only disappointment was the way it was left open for a second run without any apparent guarantee there will be one. Loved Uncle Geoff going all out on the fake dognapper in the carpark.

Yeah, I think the casting of both Mitchell and Webb didn't really work (although it probably gave it a better chance of being commissioned in the first place). They just don't fit their characters well enough.

I quite liked it though, the support cast were good and the plot moved along enough to keep it interesting.

I thought David Mitchell was prefectly cast as a paranoid loser. Webb's character probably could have been played by someone else though. Final episode was a bit weak but hopefully there'll be a second series.

Regarding Upstart Crow - I've only watched a couple of episodes; the stuff relating to Shakespeare's actual life and work is OK, but the actual plots are the usual terrible noisy late-period Ben Elton crap that just reminded me of how much better Blackadder was.

I think people are not really tuned into what Elton is doing, which is having his cake and enjoying the eating of it. It's quite knowing about his own output and that works for me.

I'm halfway through episode one of Upstart Crow and it's unspeakably bad. It's like When The Whistle Blows or something. I'm not sure on what level it's supposed to be operating.

Back is coming back :) (as is Upstart Crow)

I was certain that was going to be an article about a new series of Back but nice read all the same. Lucky guy.

Here's an update on Back (obviously has to be read in the context of Robert Webb's health scare)
