Renault 19s - esp. phase 1 and TSE

I may have posted these before - apologies if I did.

This is a pic of my phase 1 16v - I brought in from Wales in 95 ( I think )

Cracking car. It was a replacement for my 5GT Turbo and was a real step up in many respects. One thing that struck me was the speeds I was travelling at had to be stepped up considerably in the 19 to get the same thrill as I did in the 5 at much lower speeds.
I had a huge tank slapper in it while showing off to my girlfriend on our way back from eehmm "christening" the new car, while really not travelling that fast ( wet ). It broke fast and hard with very little warning but I caught it. I put that down to odd rear tyres which I sorted, but I also spun it in Galway on a really wet day once, manage to hit nothing though.

I'd have either of these back in a heart beat now !

I sold that R5 to a chap in Carlow I think with 88k miles on it. I saw it a few years later in Rathmines - with 65k miles on it !

Sold the 19 to a chap from Dublin. Did the handover at the Phoenix park motor races back in the day. No idea where the it ended up.

Well, at least 1 5 door TSE in the launch colour survives. I'm making my mind up currently if it should be my next restoration project.

I was just looking at howmanyleft,co.uk and checked the R19, R21 and R25 numbers. The decline in numbers seems to have slowed dramatically with numbers increasing slightly if anything. Maybe some pre SORN introduction cars have been uncovered. Have they come out of the banger phase/started to be recognised as "classics".

Or maybe people (temporarily) stopped scrapping their cars due to the pandemic

I worked for a Renault specialist in the late 1980's / early 1990's when the R19 was launched. We did a lot of work for Renault Distributors Irl fitting boot spoilers on Supervans, Chamades, etc (plus commercial repaints of R5 vans, Extras, Traffics and Master vans in An Post and Telecom Eireann livery)

I liked the Supervans, they were lively enough to drive and very comfortable. If given the choice I would go for a Supervan or a R19 Turbo.

I actually have a new handbook set for a Chamade somewhere

Hi Guys,

Havn't been around these parts in a while. That 19TR is indeed mine. I did sell it last year as per the Dondeal ad, but the opportunity presented itself to buy it back a few weeks ago which I did. Its now sports the collosal mileage of 22780 miles which is indeed genuine. Glad to see the 19s are getting noticed . I did indeed ad the Zenith 14" alloys which are a Boutique accessory aswell as standard fitment on certain models in certain markets. The 3 spoke steering wheel is also a Boutique accessory(not leather) The bumpers are the original but the chrome inserts were available seperately which I also fitted. I feel the upgrades are subtle without taking away from the car and certainly give it a lift.

She's a peach. Well done for getting it back and well done on the upgrades. Nice and subtle as you say. They're the upgrades I like to do.
If you're moving it on again keep me in mind.

I certainly will but Renaults in this condition are getting increasingly hard to find especially now that the UK market is effectively gone so I'll be holding onto this one unless I either go LHD from Europe or in the unlikely event that something turns up here.

Excellent thread! I too had a soft spot for the 19, 21 and first series Lagunas.

The 19 were an excellent car, so well equipped compared to the competition. I had one, a 91 phase 1 but only for a short time.

Another strong memory of the 19 was from when I was an apprentice doing a head gasket on a 1.4 energy engine. I was only used to fords and didn't know any better about turning the crankshaft with the head removed. Eeek.... :)😝

i seem to remember the army had black renault 19 chamades?? in the early 90's. they used them as staff cars.

21 was so badly built and the overheating issues made them nearly unsellable, wasn't really Renaults fault, the coolant they used in the factory was corrosive after a few years

IIRC the 19 was also known for cooling system issues. Heater matrix etc and there is a metal pipe near the exhaust manifold which would corrode through and cause a major leak. The Megane Mk1 seemed to be much better in terms of cooling despite being very similar to the 19. I think the feed to the header tank works differently on the Megane?

Any steel pipework on the 19/21 corroded, there were little frostplugs behind the manifold that used to rust through, diesel 19 also had a rubber hose that sat below the oil filter and got sodden every oil change, later Megane used hard plastic

You can add me to that list haha. I had the amazing opportunity to buy back my first car during the summer. Its a Phase 2 19 supervan. Its in rough nick as I had to pull it from a bed of nettles at the back of a shed. I finally got time to pull it into the shed to start the restoration. I see ba_barabus is doing a restoration too. What are parts like to source? I have a fairly comprehensive list of all comsumeables and some bodywork i need. Any help appreciated guys.

I sold mine once I was finished but I have a few parts in the attic. Nothing comprehensive but I'll take a look and let you know. Definitely have a set of headlights in good condition. I've a full set of genuine hubcaps too and a Renault radio. Where are you based?

I know I'm a bit late for a reply (2 years late) but I have recently bought a Renault 19 1.9 TD RT 5 door hatchback from a man in the North and VRT'd it the other day. It is a brilliant car but missing a radio. Hardly know anywhere to get one. It's a 1993 so ph2
