Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I decided to post this here as its more related to than the Train and rail systems.

Has anyone got Railworks 2020? I've just realised a Chap called Brendan Moran spent about 12 years building the Cork to Dublin route including the Limerick City and Tralee lines. I actually cant believe how much work has gone into it. And whats more... Its Freeware! I'm quite sure this chap could have made a fortune off Dovetail in the UK. The level of realism is beyond anything i've seen.

Fair play to him, but driving a train is like taxiing an A320 around for hours - necessary and demanding but utter boredom compared to flying.

I’ll pass the suggestion on to him, but he’s doing it more as a labor of love. He used to have HO scale layouts, but life more suits virtual layouts these day.

He’s about done with DART (still needs to build the rolling stock) and has apparently just tackled the Faranfare to Valentina Harbor line. Will install when I get a new PC next month.

I removed train sim. I could never really get the route working properly. the only part i could ever drive properly was mallow to Tralee. and at that ground would have been missing under the rails etc, after downloading every single file that was required.

Yeah, getting the full set of assets is annoying. Unfortunately, both he and I have been installing in bits and pieces over the years as the line gets further along, and we've discovered that assets he thinks are in a package in fact are not. As a result, when I get the new PC next month I'm going to do a full install from total scratch to make sure everything in the packages that is needed is, in fact, in the packages and work with him to fix it. I'll post back here when we have this properly sorted.

OK, with dad actually watching over my shoulder (Now that we have opened the borders), I went ahead and installed from scratch so he could see what was or was not working.

To get yourself at least rolling on Dub-Cork-Limerick-Tralee, install the RWPs (with the TS Utilities tool) from following files in order from UKTrainsim.

    35528, 35529, 35530, 35531, 35532, 37356, 37362.

Note that there are some readmes in there which instruct you to get a few more files from other sources. One of them is Polish and no longer a good URL, but it doesn't seem to be the end of the world.

There are still a few quirks he's discovered, for example, some of the DMUs are based off a German vehicle the DLC for which I did not purchase, so you might see some couplers floating down the rail line, but the majority is good. Same with the DART line should you choose to try that out, the DART EMUs are based on a payable DLC, but you can still run the line with a railcar. Maybe there's a power cut or something. Here's Howth.

Anyway, he's seen the troubles with a fresh install, so we'll see if he's able to put out a patch as best he can.

This is the greatest work of art! i still cant believe its free. Gonna install again later once the tree is up and the arguing is over haha!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Its working Brilliantly! Now the rails are still floating above ground in places but im finding no errors.

Autoballaster is not working properly tho, the bogies are textured with that black/yellow tape stuff that was showing up on some trees track side but isnt any more.

201 class is dreadfully slow to get up to full power? it takes 20 minutes to reach 60.

Has anyone else made irish rolling stock? And finally, how does one repaint a 071 class? what software....

All in all its fantastic! working 10 times better with just those files listed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I think the 201s default to having the handbrake on. Look above your head and there should be a lit switch, turn that off.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

You are quite correct. I wouldn't have copped it either, as I don't see the parking brake as an option in the HUD. Just train, engine and dynamic. But I turned it off, and it took off with the 13:00 to Cork with no trouble at all.

    Yet that indeed sorted it!

I cant find any decent links to Scenario creation tutorials. thats the next thing now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Glaceon

It has been a while since I played. I know I have some missing assets as there was some that I simply couldn't find but the vast majority is there and working fine.

Apparently not, he's got to finish the Dun Laoighre stretch before releasing it.

That and the other detail is that he doesn't have an EMU to drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Ah ok. I tried adding the Sugar factory sidings into the Tralee Line outside Mallow and it was a nightmare. the youtubers make it look so easy and id be good with stuff like that as i do a lot of AutoCAD work.

The same with C++ / Java / Python YOUTUBE Tutorials ..... They make it look soooo easy but on your own PC / MAC a completely different fraught rocky road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

I also tried to Re-skin the 071 class but alas it would t show up. It wouldnt import the file either on Bintools. Something about not having enough MIPMAP what ever that was. spent 2 hours just doing the roof only for that to happen so i think ill leave it!

    Credit for trying anyway dude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I’ve successfully reskinned stuff with MSTS in the past (for my own use) but never had the time to look into the RailWorks-based games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Are there any more updates to the Dublin-Cork route? Id love if the Sugar factory layout and sidings were put in on the Kerry Line. Ive tried to do this but its just too hard. Full credit too ye for making these route as i cant get anything to work properly when i tried to add it in.

    Response. What new sugar factory?

Can you give me a Google Maps link?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

    The old one!

The factory is long flattened now(10 Years) but the yard and line's are still there. There a few generic Factories that i tried to plonk onto the map but i cant.

    Attached is the layouts.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

He says "That factory was closed many years ago and the tracks have been long lifted". So unless you can find an onsite photo saying otherwise, I'm going to take that as a "no".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

There was 52 flat wagons there until 2 weeks ago. They only disconnected the points into the yard in 2015 and left it sit there.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

"Disconnected the points?" What happened two weeks ago?

The tracks only go as far as the road, where they are tarmac'ed over more than 10 years ago. They look to be gone on the sugar factory side of the road. There are no wagons, flat or otherwise, visible in satellite view.

@Manic Moran Any word on the DART route? I see UKTS has been a bit neglected lately, the SSL cert expired months ago and hasn't been renewed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Yeah i did ask on UKTS and they said it was inactive so the topics were locked.

    Threads are apparently locked.

Only update is he has uploaded a new file for Dublin- Cork which includes the new platform at Limerick Junction. But he couldn't post on the forum to announce it.

DART is still under construction. For whatever reason he has decided to expand the line to Rosslare so it's not public yet. (I'm home for Christmas).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Brilliant! I must check that out.

I wonder did dovetail etc ever approach him to buy the route? I wonder is it the most comprehensive community route built?

Just installed Train Simulator Classic from Steam.

How do I download and install the Irish Scenery, stations ?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

You will need to download files from UKTrainsim site , see Post #7. Be sure to check the readmes within them for other files you may also need. Plus 40806 for the most recent Limerick Junction update.

    It's not a simple one-stop install, I'm afraid.

Just wanted to say what a brilliant route Rosslare is. Heuston is a brilliant piece of freeware too, but as someone who commuted on the Waterford line for a number of years I'm very happy to be able to drive the Rosslare line through Gorey and Arklow. Just a specific feel, especially around the Rathdrum area.

I've worked on the 22000 for my own sake since I found the performance quite odd (Especially the acceleration and the weird jolt when starting) and I've basically transcribed bits of the simulation config and tractive effort graphs from the AP class 170 (which has a similar enough motor). Also changed the horn to one that fits the ICR a bit more , the Thomson 150 came in handy (Still not great, but better than the 201 horn as default).

So far I've delved into a bit of scenario making and came up with two scenarios

    1) D412 the 1520 Grand Canal Dock to Hazelhatch - This utilises both routes; first part on Rosslare line sees you go from GCD to the curve towards drumcondra , next part takes off just after Phoenix park tunnel before Islandbridge Junction. Full AI and it makes for some fun.

    2) A606 1333 Connolly - Rosslare Europort . Again, as per the real timetable you're following a dart on the way out, so some defensive driving, and then the opposite train waits for you on the loop in Wicklow. Plenty of Ai around Connolly and a GCD-Newbridge AI service.

My only real gripe is still the rolling stock. I can 100% appreciate it's freeware but if the ICR was just that bit better (textures mostly , physics can be done at a later stage they're not bad compared to the textures which show their age unfortunately). There in comes my question - Is there any plans for any work to be done on the rolling stock? Outside of the DART which we got (which is a brilliant addition, of course).

Thanks for letting me know it was released, I had no idea! Plus I had no idea that UKTS was closing next month so I may not have found it.

Hi there, I’ve got the cork up and running but for rosslare I have objects with textures saying “missing texture”

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 magi2407

    Hi all.

As a Kilkenny man I always wanted to drive a sim version of the Waterford-Heuston service and after recently going on both the Tailte Tours and IRRS tours on the Waterford - Limerick Junction line I had a taste for getting those done. So over time I've gathered (Either by purchasing or generously being provided) several bits and pieces for the route. Speed limits in the WTT , Gradient Profiles. I then decided to take the last available version of the Cork,Tralee and Limerick route by Brendan and build on top of it. Using Google maps overlay and learning building the modern ways (Thanks to Thomas Harrisons tutorials). But using the same asset packs used in the original route to keep relatively consistent visuals across the route. It's a learning ground for me while being a fairly well known route for me. Won't be perfect but better than nothing.

So far I've dabbled at it for a few days and laid track to Muine Bheag with the small bit of the Wolfhill line in Athy and the Asbestos Cement factory.

Regarding models I will want to learn that to make some basic dedicated objects at a later date. So far I want to lay track to waterford and Belview Port via Kilkenny and do the terrain. Then worry about speed limits and signals and last do scenery. Once I have this line done I would love to get the line to Limerick Junction done but I'll have to have a better look at the semaphore signalling books before tackling that.

About release haven't thought about it. I'll probably do a few work in progress videos and see if it's worth anybody's time and if that works out I will get in contact with Brendan somehow and see what his opinion is. Until a green light from him it'll stay private. But that'll be a fair amount of time away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Fair play to ya! I tried to add the old sugar factory into mallow and i just couldn't get the hang of it. And id consider myself good with all that stuff. i use a lot of AutoCad in work etc but i just couldn't get it to work for me.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

OK, I've prodded my dad into trying to turn the routes into a 'one stop shop', incorporating all the latest updates, and I've put it up on my Google Drive.

@magi2407 I'm curious as to your rejiggering with the 22000, which as you can see in this video seems to start ridiculously quickly, and slow ridiculously slowly, and how to incorporate it into either the RWP or the assets.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 magi2407

    @Manic Moran

You could half a___ it by tweaking the traction effort and power graph files but I think re writing it is better. I've got half of it done I'd say , adding in propper notches on the hud and using closest to the proper specs (mix of real specs I could get + ATS 185 since that has the hydrodynamic gearbox simulated) but I don't have 2 full days to sit down and just focus on this due to work (I'm an aero engineer by education not mechanical so some stuff I have to research from scratch). This takes time as I basically make my own blueprint from scratch. So it will have to wait some time. That and learning route building on the Waterford line.

Any idea if youd be able to upload the rosslare line here? Would love to drive but ukts has been closed

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 magi2407

So Small update on Waterford. I recently managed to procure proper elevation data for the stations on the route which then confirmed that my route was off by up to 20m in places. Hence I decided to rip up the tracks and reposition the individual stations (I had up to Bagenalstown done). I painted the terrain in Kilkenny and Waterford to roughly the correct height around the station to get an idea if I was placing correctly. Screenshots show Waterford Sallypark and Belview port (Which I intend to include to allow the running of DFDS and XPO liners as well as the Coillte timber from Sallypark. I've also got signalling diagrams and speed limits (Those are publically available in the Network statement published by IR). The only thing I want to work on is a consistent ballast texture across points but I feel this is to do with the track rule tab.

If you go on here https://www.reddit.com/r/trainsim/comments/174sq0f/irish_tsc_routes/the second post has a link to it. I have tried it but there is a lot of missing grass textures for me. Maybe you might be able to get it working. Maybe @Manic Moran will be able to help with that grass issue that’s happening.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 cf169

    Sounds like great progress. @magi2407

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Glaceon

Has anyone here gotten the Rosslare route working with the DART stock? I can't do anything that involves the DART, the game crashes with an "Out of memory" error (I have 32GB of RAM so I don't think that's the case). If I do a free roam and move the camera from Malahide to Connolly, I can click the ICR and that works fine, after which I can drive the route in an ICR. So it seems to be something to do with the DART.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 rp3582

I get exactly the same issue. I’ve given up and deleted the DART EMU.
