Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Are records kept?

Maybe someone might be able to help.
I own an old school about 200 years old and it was also used by the Church of Ireland as a church.
I am trying to find out what year it was built.
Would there be a record of this anywhere?

Yes there will be a record. It is probably a "first fruits" church, if you are comfortable letting me know the address (by PM, I wouldn't post it publicly) I might be able to find out for you.

There probably is a record somewhere but you can get a rough idea by going on to the OSI website, (http://map.geohive.ie/ is the one you want to be in, it can be a bit confusing to find) click the drop down Base Information and Mapping on the left, and it will give you a selection of historical maps to look at, there is more information under the i button, which will give you an idea of when there was a building there.

You can also look at the Land Direct site, see if there is any information on the maps. https://www.landdirect.ie/ 'proceed as guest'.

Have you looked at the deeds? When do they start?

https://www.nationalarchives.ie/article/guide-church-ireland-anglican-parish-registers/ might give you an indication of when records began in a particular church.

There is what appears to be a comprehensive list here https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/ParishRegisters/PARISHREGISTERS.pdf
    Also http://churchofirelandhist.org/

This sounds like a fascinating search, I did a search for a far more obscure bit of property and enjoyed the hunt. You may also find information about the area generally on the Down Survey site.

Finally it might be worth looking in on the Geneology site on Boards.ie they might have some ideas.

geograph.ie may have historical photos of it. Click on the relevant 1km square and open up photos in the area, if anyone has uploaded historical photos in the same square they will show up in "related images".

    Scrap the cap!

Hi OP, tried to send you a PM a couple of times but it says your inbox is full.

I haven't had much luck I'm afraid! It's not detailed in the usual places such as the Pevsner guide, nor the record of protected structures, nor any of the other myriad of books I have... I think your best bet is to contact the local historical society, someone there should be able to help!

Having looked at the OS maps it is there in the 25inch and may be there in the 6 inch but it is not clearly indicated. You might have a look at the OS letters and see if there is any mention, select the county here: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/digital-book-collection/digital-books-by-subject/ordnance-survey-of-irelan/

If the Representative Church Body Library in Churchtown, Dublin doesn't have it, it probably isn't worth having. Seriously, while some parochial records might remain locally, but a defunct church likely will have sent its records to the responsible body.
