Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Absolutely lashing out of the heavens here in cork , haven't seen it this heavy in ages and hitting the north of the house which rarely happens. Could hear thunder off in the distance too! Windy aswell. Interesting night!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,958 ✭✭✭_Whimsical_

It's absolutely freezing in galway city, I've never heard thunder before when it's this cold.

    Day 2 Convective Outlook
    VALID 06:00 UTC Sun 31 Dec 2017 - 05:59 UTC Mon 01 Jan 2018

    ISSUED 22:05 UTC Sat 30 Dec 2017

    ISSUED BY: Dan

Sharp upper trough will migrate eastwards across the British Isles on Sunday, with cold mid-levels atop SSTs generating deep instability in the post-frontal environment. The cold front first thing in the morning over England and Wales may exhibit some elements of line convection given strong flow parallel to the front in a strongly sheared environment. While this may be capable of a brief spell of gusty winds and heavy rain, in general convection will tend to be too shallow for much in the way of lightning.

Behind the cold front, several shortwaves will approach from the west, providing the focus for scattered showers that may occasionally form more organised lines as they track eastwards across Ireland, Wales and England. Lightning activity will tend to be most frequent over the Celtic Sea and English Channel, and adjacent coastal counties - a bit marginal for an upgrade to SLGT at present. Such deep convection will be capable of strong, gusty winds, small hail and perhaps a tornado.

Looks like some squally showers ( some hail perhaps ) tomorrow and might be an impressive squall line heading across towards the UK in the afternoon, most of it perhaps offshore.

Likewise in Galway city. Long low rumbles of thunder and a couple of lightning flashes out over the bay

Plenty of big squally showers today here near Tralee nearly all with a mix of rain and hail. Impressive cloudscapes.

Plenty of activity over water but not much over land. Nice storm that moved into Galway / North Clare this morning.

A few recent sferics near the SW coast. Strike in Clare in the last 10 mins.

Seeing plenty of flashes here off the west cork coast! Only hearing a small bit of thunder though because I think the ocean is drowning out the sound. Beautiful though!

Very loud thunder and lightning in Kerry woke me last 15 mins

    @MetEireann

The heavy rain should soon clear, then sunny spells and showers for much of the morning, with just fresh southwest winds. However, heavy locally thundery rain will extend from the Atlantic during the afternoon, with some spot flooding.

Third attempt to make a post , lightning here near Tralee has knocked out the power a few times in the last 20 mins. One blinding flash with almost instant thunder rattled the house. followed by a squall of hail. Going to be some night of it. Not showing up on the maps for here.

A lot of lightning reported in kerry early this morning.
