Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Replacement Shimano road shifters

Discovered this evening that my left hand shifter is fubar, so need to find a replacement. It's a 9-speed double Tiagra. Saw single replacements on CRC for about €90, is this about as good as I'm going to get? I assume upgrading to 105 or Ultegra is out of the question these days for a 9-speed?

A Shimano 10 speed shifter will work ok with a 9 speed setup. It will also give you a little more choice when it comes to replacing your defective one.

Edited to add: the left hand shifter is the front chainring shifter...any Shimano double shifter will work with that.

You'll need to use an alternative cable routing to use a 10-sp shifter with a 9-sp cassette.

Not an issue with the left-hand shifter though.

I've probably got a set of old 9-speed Ultegra shifters in the shed somewhere: a bit scuffed and with a missing faceplate if I remember, but functional. Yours if you want them.

Noticed a set of Dura Ace 9 speed shifters on the adverts section for €130. Could be worth a punt, though _rp's offer seems very generous.

That's interesting, as a 10-speed 105 shifter is the same price as the 9-speed Tiagra. Would be nice to have the hidden cabling!

I took it to the lbs yesterday and the guy there said it's usually the left shifter that goes. Is this generally the case? I'm not sure if I should replace both shifters now, seeing as it is quite an expensive job. The bike is about 3 years old and has seen a lot of action over the last 12 months in particular. My original thinking was to upgrade to 105 or Ultegra in stages when the various components got worn out.
