Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Oh that would be something! Must go look.

edit: you'd righty assume fold3 would fit perfectly into their ww2 free offer, as it's all military... but sadly I can't personally view any free fold3 nor newspapers.com records (also owned by ancestry), but here is what they said would be included: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/veday75?o_iid=108208&o_lid=108208&o_sch=Web+Property

Strange. For what it's worth I was already a member but let my sub lapse recently.

    Maybe try this link?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,681 ✭✭✭✭Deja Boo

the link is visible ^ but viewing doesn't seem to work without subscribing (except those items already clipped by others)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,777 ✭✭✭BowWow

    Cant get it to work...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭Mick Tator

The link ‘works’ for me - opens their homepage which has a small box top right of screen ‘Try 7 days for free’. I tried to register and it recognized my email, so I tried logging in, got access to 'search' but when I clicked on a ‘found article’ it wanted me to register again, full details including credit card (which could be cancelled later). Crap functionality.

The more important issue IMO is it’s important to realise that Newspapers.com does not have all years for the papers it lists and ‘Irish’ coverage is poor. It seems good for the US, but quite poor for Ireland. It has the Freemans Journal (up to 1900) and about 20 years of the Irish Times (early years) and a few papers from the South East but not much else. Absent for e.g. are the Tipperary Vindicator and the Limerick Chronicle, both great for coverage of events in surrounding counties in the mid 1800’s; also no Northern papers feature. Similarly the site is very poor for Australia, the free Oz site (Trove) is miles ahead.

My opinion– it’s good when it’s free but certainly not value for an annual subscription. Use it when you are desperate for info and cannot find it elsewhere but don’t expect too much for Irish searches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,777 ✭✭✭BowWow

    Have it working also, -
Say you are in Ancestry and have a newspapers.com hint and you click on the hint, then you get asked to subscribe, pay etc.
However if you have a registered newspaper.com account, or you register, you can put the details from the hint into that and you will be able to do the search - very time consuming..

Would fully agree with poster "Mick Tator" and the use of this site.

Would Irish Newspaper Archives have any special Christmas offers coming up? There is a report I know they have but its too recent for Newspapers.com.

They usually do. Follow them on social media to keep an eye.

Thanks Hermy. I'm looking for a report on a tragic death, requested by a family member. There seems to be an issue as they said they are having trouble printing it out legibly. I'll pm you with the details tomorrow.

Just curious, is it as painfully slow for you as it is when I try to use it in libraries?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 11,421 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hermy

Sadly, it is still as slow as ever which is a shame given it's such a brilliant resource.

I was told by head office of their intentions to update the servers but that was over a year ago and still no sign of the promised improvement.

I agree about the slowness, such a pity. On the plus side, they are VERY decent to their subscribers in terms of applying offers and discounts. Some bigger companies could learn a lot from them.

It is. And you can refresh it very easily by mistake meaning you start all over again at first result which is painful.

Rootsireland offering 25% off an annual sub at the moment. Unlike Ancestry, they let existing subscribers avail of the offer to extend their sub.

Thanks mindhorn. I'm not seeing that when I open up - I'm a 'registered user' and I think as a frequent exploiter of Ancestry's freebies/special offers they have identified my IP or email and I'm blocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,538 ✭✭✭✭L1011

I also didn't get the offer, possibly for the same reasons! I've done the odd month and used lots of free access offers.

Gave in on the test despite data privacy concerns. Fairly sure anyone dodgy has probably already got my details and if some future database access turns up a relative as a murderer that's their own fault!

  • Registered Users Posts: 297 ✭✭mindhorn

Strange. I've paid for the odd month also but this is the first time I've paid for a full year. Payment went through (same email and same payment details as before). I purchased two kits but that would hardly make a difference.

Okay, time to hide my credit card.

This time last year I got 12 months on ancestry.co.uk for 59.99 sterling.
Best offer at moment for me is 69.99 sterling, but for only 6 months!
(Don't understand why they still cant accept payment in Euro )
    I'll wait and monitor it....
Might be time to give FMP a turn...

If I go into "My Account" instead of "Subscribe" I get an offer of 1 year for 119.99 Sterling.

I've decided to take a Months Pro membership with FMP - gives access to their Global records and British Newspapers. I'll update my Ancestry Tree with whatever I find, hints etc. Will go back to Ancestry in the future.

(ps - I also back up everything on a 2017 copy of Family Tree Maker).

Wow, thanks for that. I hope this offer works in the US. I pay a fortune for Ancestry World plus Fold3--which I only use for city directories, invaluable--and for newspapers.com--all the same company--but I refuse to pay another cent for the 'publishers extra'. They keep dangling hints on Ancestry that I can't open unless I pay even more. They would steal the pennies off the eyes of your dead grandmother.
