Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Ilikedwayurthinkin has been fav for the Martin Pipe since Christmas, will they punt another one of theirs at a bigger price? For the price he is, Ilikedwayurthinkin would want to have about a stone up his sleeve. 5/1 is a mad price, now he could win and win well because I think we all say his run at Fairyhouse in December and the drift that day said it all. He was flagged up by everyone after that day and the bookmakers took no chances. Early Doors was a potential Grade 1 horse over hurdles and they waited with him to get their big day and to win that race you probably need a Grade 1 level horse it’s that competitive. Some good horses have won it over the last couple of years.

A stone up his sleeve is over egging it.Early Doors was nowhere near a stone well in last year. Early Doors was a potential grade 1 horse but then there are plenty 'potential' Grade 1 horses.

Made the mistake of backing Front View last time in Thurles when he was not off a yard. Lack of a handicap run would be a serious concern for me. If he had a spin in one I would be all over him but wont back it because of that.

Because they would be found out as knowing **** all and ruin their shot at a few bob doing the preview circuit next year again. Read the Daniel Watkins guide if you want the handicaps picked apart. 3rd most tipped winners last year of anyone at previews or doing a preview of the ones i took note of last year. Noel Meade interestingly enough was number 1
Where would I get that Daniel Watkins guide there Duffley thank you please?

The average rating for the winner of the Martin Pipe since 2010 is 140.5 so he needs to improve more than half a stone if he is to win. He’s only rated 132 and based on that 5/1 is a crazy price this far out. If it was an overnight or on the day gamble on Friday I’d say something so if they really do fancy him and they put the cash down then what price could he go off? He’s definitely better than his current rating but there’s value to be had further down the betting. What it is yet I’m not sure!

    Athlone...

    PANEL

    GORDON ELLIOTT
    KATE HARRINGTON
    EDDIE O'LEARY
    FRAN BERRY - MC
    DARRAGH FITZPATRICK - BOOKMAKER

    SUPREME

Gordon said that Abracadabras was in good form and that better ground would suit him. He said that the biggest danger was Asterion Forlonges. He also said that he would walk the course on Sunday morning and if he felt that the ground was on the heavy side, he would divert Envoi Allen to this race as he would not want to destroy him in a slog race in the Ballymore. Kate said that Robert Power was keen on Fiddlerontheroof and the softer the ground the better for him. Eddie said that Abracadabras was a better horse on good ground. Darragh liked Asterion Forlonges. They all felt that the Irish had the stronger hand here.

    ARKLE

Kate said that she thought that Notebook was the real deal. Eddie also seemed confident about him and when asked about his behaviour before the race at Leopardstown the last day, he said that in the UK , a horse can wear a hood to the start and then take it off before the start of the race. Gordon said that he has been impressed by Notebook and that whatever beats him will win but he mentioned an outsider that could run a big race in Esprit Du Large. Darragh liked Brewinupastorm in this.

    CHAMPION HURDLE

All agreed that this was a sub standard race and none had any strong feelings about the race. Kate said that Supasundae was in excellent form and that Puppy was very keen on him and that he was a great each way bet. Gordon said that his Coeur Sublime had an each way chance in a weak race and Eddie also liked Supasundae each way,

    MARES HURDLE

All agreed that this was a two horse race but the panel were split on who would win. Darragh and Gordon liked Benie Des Dieux while Kate and Eddie liked Honeysuckle with Eddie saying that Honeysuckle was a certainty. Darragh mentioned Roksana each way.

    NATIONAL HUNT CHASE

Eddie and Gordon were not keen on Carefully Selected with both saying that his jumping was not great and Eddie actually stated that he had no chance. Eddie liked his own horse Smoking Gun each way with Tom Hamilton riding. Gordon said that he runs Ravenhill here with a great chance and that Jamie Codd was booked for the ride.

    ULTIMA

Gordon and Eddie mentioned Ellwood here if he gets into the race as having a great each way chance

    BALLYMORE

Gordon said that Envoi Allen was in great form and would take all the beating here but again stated that there was a slight chance he might be diverted to Supreme if ground comes up very soft. Eddie said that Envoi Allen was an Aeroplane but also said that Sporting John was a serious good horse. Both Eddie and Gordon said that Easy Work would also run here and that he had a good each way chance. Kate said that Puppy said that The Big Breakaway was not good enough to beat Envoi Allen.

    RSA

Eddie said that Champ has a massive engine and thought that he had jumped better the last day until he fell but the horse he liked was Copperhead here. He said that Allaho would not stay. Gordon said that if Allaho was his, he would go for the Marsh novices instead of this race. He liked Copperhead and Champ and stated that Battleoverdoyen was not a certain runner as it would depend how he travelled over whether he ran or not.

    CHAMPION CHASE

Neither Kate or Gordon liked Chacon Pour Soi with Eddie having big doubts if he really stayed the trip. Kate said it would be an English winner, Gordon liked Defi Du Seuil while Eddie liked Altior.

    CROSS COUNTRY

Gordon said that Tiger Roll was in great form and needed to run here to qualify for the national but stated that they had a back up plan to run in a two miles Chase at Navan to qualify if things did not work out here. Kate said that Neverushacon would not want the ground too soft.

    BUMPER

Fran said that he had heard good things about Queens Brook from the Elliott stable and had backed her each way at a big price. Eddie and Kate liked Darling Daughter while Gordon also liked Queens Brook each way. He said that David Pipe liked Israel Champ a lot. The panel were not keen on Panic Attack saying that if she was that good that Willie would not have left her out of his stables and would have got one of his owners to buy her.

    CORAL CUP

Gordon said that Easy Work was a non runner here and that his Coco Beach had an each way shout here.

    BOODLES

Gordon said that he would run five here. He said that Aramax needs good ground and seemed quite keen on Tromadour saying that he was working well.

    MARSH NOVICES CHASE

Gordon and Eddie said that Allaho should run here and would be very hard to beat in this race. Eddie also said that Melon would not get around. Gordon said that Samcro was working well and he was considering using cheekpieces on him. he needs good ground really. Kate liked Easy Game each way here.

    RYANAIR

All liked A Plus Tard here

    STAYERS HURDLE

Gordon said that Apples Jade would run here and they were trying new things to freshen her up but that she was not working as well as other years. They all liked Paisley Park with Eddie mentioning Emmitom each way and Kate mentioning Penhill each way.

    PERTEMPS

Gordon said that Sire De Berlais was in good form and that The Storyteller had a good each way chance. Eddie mentioned his horse Royal Thief had a great each way
    KIM MUIR

Gordon and Eddie both mentioned their horse Milan Native as having a great each way chance with Rob James riding him claiming seven pounds.

    ALBERT BARTLETT

Gordon liked Latest Exhibition here and said that his Fury Road had a great each way chance here. He said that he may run Run Like Fred here too and that he would have a chance if he ran. Eddie liked his horse each way here, Cobblers Way saying that he would keep on galloping.

    TRIUMPH

Gordon and Eddie both liked Solo here

    GOLD CUP

Kate thought this was between Santini and Delta Work with her preference just being Santini. She also mentioned that if the ground came up very soft , then Chris's Dream would have a great each way chance and that Puppy might even switch to ride him if this is the case. Gordon said that Delta Work was in great form and that Al Boum Photo was the one to beat with Presenting Percy having a solid each way chance. Eddie said that he respects Santini.

    COUNTY HURDLE

Gordon said that he was running Thatsy here and he had an each way chance.

    FOXHUNTERS

Darragh said that he really liked Billaway here but Kate questioned his form if he was good enough. Eddie said that Derek O'Connor was getting off Minella Rocco here to ride Staker Wallace but Gordon questioned this saying that he would not believe anything that Derek said.

    MARTIN PIPE

Gordon said that he would run a few here and had Sean O'Keeffe and Fergus Gregory already booked. Kevin Brouder was in the audience and asked Gordon for a ride in the race and Gordon told him to come back to him before he accepted another ride in the race. Gordon seemed to like two of his horses here, Column Of Fire and The Bosses Oscar.

    GRAND ANNUAL

Gordon runs two here with each way chances Chosen Mate and Éclair De Beaufeu

    BROWN ADVISORY PLATE

Gordon and Eddie both seemed keen on Death Duty each way here.

    CHARITY BETS

    FRAN: 100 WIN DELTA WORK

KATE:50 EACH WAY DOUBLE SUPASUNDAE AND INSTANT RETURN ( BOODLES )

GORDON: 50 EACH WAY COLUMN OF FIRE AND 50 EACH WAY FURY ROAD

EDDIE: 50 WIN FURY ROAD AND 50 WIN ROYAL THIEF

Darragh stated that he had given Gordon a 10euro each way Lucky 15 bet at a previous preview night

    FURY ROAD - albert bartlett
    QUEENS BROOK - bumper
    DELTA WORK - gold cup
    TROMADOUR - boodles

I like that Dave Orton fella from the racing post. Think he's a good presenter/host compared to the likes of emmet Kennedy and those

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,429 ✭✭✭Morgans

Declan rix pulled a real Emmet Kennedy on that atr preview. Even Chapman gave him some advice saying 'remember why I'm the one presenting this this year' at the beginning. Could see Blake and Tony Mullins cringing. Any lad going on a sponsored videoed event talking about how he'd eat his Mickey regardless of context won't last long in front of cameras. He has an opportunity and up to him to make the most of it. Tony Keenan always good to listen to. Tony Mullins is great value on the previews. Ideally suited.

Not a huge fan of Dave Orton either. If he toned things down one notch, stopped worrying about being viewed as a character, he would be bearable. His write ups in the racing post better than what he does on camera.

I've done a compilation of the previews on this thread and ordered them by positive mentions, naps, lays (lay defined as "I think X is a lay because xyz" not just "I'm not a fan of X" talk) and charity bets. Charity bets are the horses in bold.

Accuracy can't be exact because it's mostly "He said" or "I heard he said to him or her" kinda talk.

A Plus Tard, Paisley Park and Envoi Allen get most positive mentions in the end, just under 12-1 treble at the moment, not too bad.

    edit:typo

Was there a specific incident that Emmet Kennedy got pulled up on?

Did some study of Cheltenham and these are my views atm for anyone who cares (probably no one tbf).

Supreme: Asterion Forlonge. Respect Shishkin. Hate Abacadabras.
Arkle: Notebook. Maybe Cash Back. Against Fakir. Brewinupastorm has no chance.
Champion Hurdle: Epatante I’m finding v hard to judge. Coming around to her. Supasundae probably the bet. Against Mullins two and the Triumph 1, 2
Mares: Could see a last min switcheroo. Prices are right.
Nh chase: terrible field. Carefully Selected only needs to jump around Which he probably will
    Ballymore: Envoi wins
RSA: Hate Champ. Minella Indo needs to show improvement like he did last year. Respect Allaho.
Champion Chase: Chacun Pour Soi wins. Respect DDS. Against Altior big time
    Bumper: no strong view.
Marsh: against itchy feet. Easy game the bet and I’ll prob back Melon
    Ryanair: Min probably
    Stayers: paisley park wins
Mares novice hurdle: dolcita or Colreevy. Minella melody has a penalty which will count against her.
Triumph: I really like Solo long term. Dunno if he’ll win this though.
Ab : monkfish. Dead against thyme hill. Latest exhibition I respect
Gold Cup: decided I’m against al boum and last year’s novice will win. One of Delta, Santini or lostintranslation will win. Haven’t decided which one yet.

Am I mad to think Faugheen can win the Marsh? Not overly impressed with the competition especially if Allaho and Fakir run elsewhere. Won't go off at 7/1

I know track records are against him but this is the machine we're talking about

The Racing Post Cheltenham preview is one of the better ones. No nonsense, straight to the point, and well spared of "personalities" playing to the gallery.

    Ganleys Cheltenham Preview
    Panel:
    Luke Harvey (LH)
    Mick Fitzgerald (MF)

    Star Sports Bookie (ST)

    Tuesday 10th March
    1.30 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (2m 1/2f)
The word is Envoi Dallen will go for the Supreme as the going will be soft or worse!
PK: Doubts the ability of Envoi Dallen and likes Shishkin
MF: Envoi Dallen goes for this races and Chantry House is worth a bet
JC: Asterion Forlonge beat nothing in Ireland, speok to Henderson and he likes Chantry House. Joe like Fiddler on the roof on soft ground.
ST: is gonna lay Shishkin all day, Envoi Dallen goes fo the Supreme.

    2.50 Ultima Handicap Chase (3m 1/2f)
MF: Like Discorama and La Baque au Roi is seriously well handicapped (but maybe the track an issue)

    LH: likes Brewingupastorm
PK: Like Skelton’s horse Marie Banrigh
MF: is not a fan of Notebook, Fakir Doudaries is agreat jumper but won’t like soft – like Rougue Vif ew
    SP: the fav will win!

3.30 Unibet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy (2m 1/2f)
The worst line up for a Champion Hurdle the panel has seen in a long time! The best hurdle race will be run at 4:41 the Mares Hurdle which is a sad reflection on the Champion Hurdle!
PK: Three outsiders ew Call me Lord / Silver Streak / Ballyandy
MF: Epitante is very talented but flopped last year at Cheltenham due to the atmosphere, will she handle it ? Thinks Supasundae is worth a bet. Like Pentland Hills but the horse has emptied now a few times when push comes to shove!
JC: furious that Mullins overrides the decision of Rich Richi to run Bene Des Dieux in the Champion Hurdle! Back Cilaos Emery ew but wasn’t happy!
SP: They are gonna lay the fav all day and Pentland Hills is a dog!

4.10 Mares’ Hurdle (for the David Nicholson Trophy) (2m 4f)
Race of the day between Bene Des Dieux and Honeysuckle
JC: Nothing beats Bene Des Dieux – it’s a cert!

    4.50 Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase (2m 4 1/2 f)

JC: Like Tranwreck from the Henry de Bromhead yard!
    LH: Like Champagne Platinum

5.30 National Hunt Challenge Cup Chase (4m)
MF: Crazy price about Carefully selected – doesn’t jump well enough! Like Forza Milan
    SP: likes Ravenhill
    PK: like Forza Milan

    Wednesday 11th March
    1.30 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (2m 5f)
LH: Like the The Big Breakway, big strong galloping horse – will love the ground!
PK: have a bet now on the race before Envoi Dallen pulls out! Likes Thyme Hill and Longhouse Poet and Stolen Silver both ew
MF: Thyme Hill is too careful at his hurdles, Sporting John is a very smart horse and also The Big Breakaway.
    SP: likes Sporting John

    2.10 RSA Steeple Chase (3m 1/2f)
LH: Unfortunately the fences get in the way of Champ!
PK: Champ is a lunatic but talented, he thinks Copperhead is the one to beat on form!
JC: doesn’t like Copperhead and thinks Allaho is the one
    MF: likes Minella Indo
SP: Laying Allaho and Champ. Minella Indo has a great chance. Copperhead a great prep but too young?

    2.50 Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle (2m 5f)
    PK: likes Dame de Compaigne
    SP: the Mullins horse
    JC: Tiger tap tap ew

3.30 Betway Queen Mother Champion Steeple Chase (2m)
    Race of the week!
LH: has not been impressed with Chacun pour Soi
JC: Altior’s rating is serious but Chacun pour Soi is his Nap of the week!
MF: race of the festival and altoir is a winning machine (ground only worry)
PK: Altior doesn’t jump fast enough anymore and he likes Chacun pour Soi

4.50 Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (2m 1/2f)
MF: likes Mick Pastor (have a look at his rating when in France)

5.30 Weatherbys Champion Bumper (Open NH Flat Race) (2m 1/2f)
JC: Appreciate it is a good thing!

    Thursdays 12th March
    1.30 Marsh Novices’ Steeple Chase (2m 5f)
LH: likes Itchy Feet is a decent horse
PK: think Itchy Feet will win

The Racing Post Cheltenham preview is one of the better ones. No nonsense, straight to the point, and well spared of "personalities" playing to the gallery.

Was good but also enjoy the banter tony Mullins was hilarious this year, rix was not so.

Just to give an idea of how nonsensical it is for anybody to be listening to these 'experts' - Ruby Walsh puts up Abracadabra on that link, on the TG4 preview the other night his selection was Asterion Forlonge and for good measure on RacingTV this morning he said he'd like to ride Shiskhin.

    Plenty of bases covered there.

In fairness Ruby is excellent at picking winners, that is why Paddy Power employ him to advise their punters.

He told me to back a mare called Benie Des Dieux, so he said. He said she was a huge price at 4/7 and that I should fill my boots.

    He is sound like that.

I go the other way. "Eff you, I won't listen to your 'tipster knowledge'" raging against the industry machine, so I find some 20/1 shot that when it comes up once in fifty I can really stick it to these so called experts. You didn't see that one coming, did you? Look at me, holding in my celebrations while the bar is tearing up tickets and supping losers pints. So what if I've had one e/w shot come in for the first two days of the festival, this is victory. The lad in the bookies will have no queue, because you all got it wrong, and I'll go up and collect my €10.50.

Have a file from a friend who compiles the preview nights into one spreadsheet and does a bit of trend analytics. Saw someone had something similar earlier but this looks a bit cleaner as he's at it a few years. For what it's worth. It's 4mb so too big to attach if anyone wants to PM me their email I can forward it on

I take previews with a pinch of salt but i was at one at Stratford races yesterday and one i took from it was from Richard Johnson when he said if the ground gets deep for the bumper to have a few quid e/w on Admiral who he rides for Tom Lacey, he has thrived in bumpers with soft/heavy going.

Very little to be honest. Between poor speaker system and lads talking it was hard to even hear anything. Russel and Blackmore went through the main races picking the obvious.
Mouse has 2 going including Foxy Jack. He didn't speak for long.
Rachel didn't give much away regards Honeysuckle but she was bullish on her doing well. Again hard to hear exactly what she said.
Brian Acheson pretty much said Chris's Dream will skip Cheltenham for Aintree.
Said any jockey he wanted was already snapped up.
At the end , which i found a little odd , Acheson went over to a lad in the crowd and said something in his ear. The lad then asked Davy about Galvin. Conspiracy me was wondering what was up here!:pac:
Davy said the usual and said how he was looking forward to riding him.
Anyone have an opinion on what race Galvin will run in?

    Rachel right to be bullish!
Galvin comes 2nd going off 4/1 JF.
    Brian Acheson lied!!:)

    LH: likes Brewingupastorm
