Wooden desk top

    Hi all, I'm upgrading my home office and looking to get a nice piece of wood for the desk top. I plan to place it on top of a couple of Ikea units (Alex) that I can use for storage at each end.

    Havent finalised the overall length yet but I am looking at somewhere between 1.8-2m and about 60cm deep, preferably 3-4cm thick

    I seen woodworkers.ie have 3m lengths of oak etc that would probably do but I'll have waste then I really dont think I'll use

    Anywhere you could suggest looking? I'm in north Kildare area

    I think woodworkers will cut to suit. or they used to.

    Quinn Hardwoods do hardwood worktops, might do nicely. They're near Clondalkin, at the back of Woodies after the red cow heading towards Dublin.

    Thanks all for the replies....have reviewed the space and think I might extend further out to the 2.4m length table so if woodworkers will cut to size then the beech one would do the trick 30mm thickness

    any idea of the prices from Quinns?

    Also if I was to get the beech one, would it be easy enough to darken it?

    I wouldn't darken it unless I had to. Why not get a wood that's more like the colour you actually want. Like a walnut or something.
    Don't noyeks do a large range of worktops in various woods?

    I'm pretty sure that's where we got out kitchen worktop, but we got ash. We needed a relatively long length, and I didn't want a join, so woodworkers didn't have what suited. I still have some left over that I use as an outdoor work surface with some trestles.

    ok great, I'll have a look

    I'm on a budget so need to watch the price but Ikea have Walnut laminate length 2.4m for 140eur so if I can get a solid piece for similar money I'd prefer that route

    2.4m is a big desk. We use Hilver desks from Ikea which are bamboo but shorter than you want.

    Woodworkers produce great wood and will cut it however you want. However, this is unfinished wood which will need to be treated and likely sanded. THe edges are generally 90degrees and thus niot as suitable for use as a desk. Kt is intended to be sanded and finished as a worktop (which I use it for). That can be a fairly involved DIY job.

    Ikea do a solid oak countertop too.
    186 cm for €180 or 246 cm for €240.

    ya thanks, I had seen this aswell

    the space against the wall I was putting the desk is 246cm and it looks like the general sizes are 246cm

    after re-assessing the logistics of trying to get a 3m piece of wood cut and then trying to get a 2.4m piece to the house, getting it up the stairs and placing it, I'm going to go with the slightly smaller desk of 180cm
    My current desk is 135cm so its a decent upgrade

    I see the Rasunda Oak worktop in Ikea is unfinished, which is fine

    if I wanted to get a walnut finish to it, would putting something like this on it work?

    You can get Danish oil with a tint/colour. Test on a non-visible piece or off-cut first.
