Why is petrol so dear in D15?

Was visiting a friend in Ballinteer tonight. Petrol at the two nearest stations to their house 136.8. Got back to D15, petrol 148.8, a whole 12c a litre most expensive, so €6 on an average fill?

This isn't a one off, petrol around the Navan Road/Blanchardstown/Clonsilla/Clonee is consistently at least 5c a litre more expensive than over there. I've never seen the margin as high as 12c before though!

Thats very cheap petrol €1.36, cheapest my way €1.39, €1.48 that's dear!

Tonight the gap is unusually wide but it's consistently at least 5c a litre more expensive over this way. From memory the stations on the N4 around Lucan/Palmerstown tend to be about 1-2c cheaper than D15 so I'm really wondering why we are expected to pay so much.

D24 is also very expensive. I regularly find petrol a good deal cheaper around Kimmage than a few miles out in Tallaght .

€1.2x for diesel today without discount anywhere in Dublin would be a rarity. I fueled up @ top coolquay yesterday for €1.29 and that was with a 6c per ltr off.

145.8 for petrol in Circle K in Hartstown this evening. The one in Coolmine Industrial Estate usually has the same prices.

I was surprised to see that today - petrol 136.8 at Maxol on Ballinteer Avenue, beside SuperValu. It always tends to be a few cent cheaper, but it's not usually that much.

Alas, I filled up this morning in Ballymount at what I thought was a reasonable €1.44.

I have noticed this too. Petrol is often a good bit cheaper when I'm visiting the Southside. My theory is because Circle K have a bit of a monopoly in the Castleknock/Blanch area and keep prices high between them. Areas with more competition have slightly lower prices.

I haven’t bought fuel in Dublin 15 or D7 in several years, due to what appears to be a cartel operating amongst the Filling Station’s in the respective areas.
The best value for Fuel is the Filling Station at Mount Brown near the main entrance to St James Hospital.
This is followed by “Go” Kylemore Rd Ballyfermot opposite Sheldon Park Hotel.

Was just going to post the same. I live in D15 but work in D12 so I only fill up on the Kylemore Road anymore. Have saved loads.

Ironically the cheapest fuel in Dublin 4 on Morehampton Road near the Ballsbridge Hotel (old Jury’s).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,198 ✭✭✭Murt10

The answer to that is blindingly obvious. Nearly every single station in the area is now Circle K, so there's absolutely no bloody competition.

Circle K has taken over Topaz and Statoil stations. Monopoly supplier in an area, naturally leads to supplier price gouging, why wouldn't they, if thet can get away with it.

Not long ago we had Shell, Topaz, Discount fuels, Maxol, Esso to name all the stations I can remember in the area. Now we have Circle K, plus more Circle K, plus more Circle K and a token Applegreen, which is doing quite well and doesn't rock the boat.

You're not going to get a monopoly supplier competing against himself. They do, and will, charge as much as the market can bear.

To think I use to try and stay local to keep money and jobs in the area, not anymore

A taximan reccomended that place to me years ago, when I lived in Dublin that was where I used always go for fuel.

You'd want to see what Circle K in Kilmainham, which is right round the corner from Mount Brown, is charging for their petrol, compared to Dublin 15.

A bit of competition and Circle K are well able to reduce their price, otherwise they'll charge as much as they possibly can.

Bad etiquette replying to my own post, but I'll take my chances :):):). Hoping to knock the smirk off Central K's face

I was over in Dublin 8 earlier this evening and got a fill in the EMO filling Station in Mount Brown (nearly opposite the entrance to Jamess Hospital where the Luas enters, for those who don't know where it is).

Anyway, after filling up I decided to note all the petrol/diesel prices on the way home to D15.

Guess what I found. We're being ripped off big time here in Dublin 15, because there's no competition. My advice for anyone coming out of town, is once a week to swing by Emo in Mount Brown and fill up, and spend the savings on yourself, rather than giving it to those greedy robbin' bastxxds

Tabs aren't working, but the 1st price is for petrol and the 2nd is for diesel. (Mods please amend if you can)

    Station| Petrol | Diesel
    Emo Mount Brown | 138.9 | 128.9

    Circle K Sth Cir Road| 141.8 | 131.8

    Applegreen, Sarsfield Rd, Ballyfermot| 142.8 | 142.8

    Circle K, Castleknock | 145.6 | 137.9

    Circle K, Blanchardstown| 147.9 | 138.9

    Circle K, Coolmine| 144.8 | 135.8

    Applegreen, Clonsilla Road | 144.8 | 135.8

That's a difference of about 9c per liter between Blanch and Emo. As it takes over 40 liters to fill my car, that's E5 per fill that I'm being overcharged each time.

While I agree that the price difference is farcical, you'd need a 50L tank before you'd be getting overcharged by €4.50, let alone €5 at 9c per litre.

Doesn’t really matter the size of your tank, it matters the KMs you do and the efficiency of your car. I use about 70 litres every 2 weeks. €160 a year is worth shopping around for considering that those KMs driven put me in a lot of places other than D15.

Living in d15 for 2 years now. I think locally ive put 20 quid in twice. Always make sure to fill up when on the road. Would be on average 5c a litre cheaper for petrol in the sticks. Dont get me started on circle k and the competition authority.

I was referring to the specific example of a tank being "over 40L", and pointing out that specifically that was still a ways from being a fiver per fill difference (unless that was a very lowball estimate of the poster's tank) but thanks for the info!

Agree completely with this, and I never suggested that it wasn't wise or worthwhile to look for cheaper options if you're passing them.

5c a litre is about a 3% premium. what's unusual about petrol prices is why they're so consistent, rather than why they're divergent.

e.g. 40l at €1.45 is €58, but at €1.40 is €56. there are probably shag all other products where shopping around will gain such a small discount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,299 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Still gets you a free cup of coffee at €1.40/€56 , know what your saying but with me its the principle.

2 Petrol stations on the grand canal near dolphins barn had petrol at 1.35 a few weeks back when the cheapest in D15 was 1.45.

There's an interesting psychology with regards to fuel prices and their elasticity. I remember reading a report some years ago about how changing fuel prices lead car owners to fill to a set amount, ie I'm going to fill €20, regardless of the price. They aren't going to change their car by and large for the sake of a 10% or even 20% hike in fuel costs alone, though it might help ultimately push them that way. So a lot of people think in terms of filling by a set amount and don't bother to shop around. There's also the hassle of the forward planning that goes into shopping around for what they perceive to be a €3 here or a €2 there that might, ultimately, add up to €100+ over a year.

There's loads of examples of people not switching mortgages, electricity and gas suppliers, etc etc, when they could save that kind of money; and fuel is no exception. A significant amount of margin is made off of apathy.

Try GO on the Kylemore Road opposite the Sheldon Park Hotel. The prices are always very competitive.

Agree with the others on this thread that think that a cartel of service stations seem to be keeping D15 full prices higher than they should be.

Myself, I usually go down to the Circle K in Kilmainham or the Applegreen on Usher’s Quay to fill my tank. Dublin 15 could really do with a Tesco service station along with a proper, big Tesco store.

Tesco will match local pricing and aren't particularly competitive.

What I don't understand is in my local town on a straight road there are 3 petrol stations very close to each other. They are basically beside each other. One is always 2 or 3 cent cheaper than the others. Yet people go to the other 2. Surely you would go to the cheaper one? I know it's only a few cents but still.

Last time I got petrol (few weeks ago) Tesco Maynooth was 8c more expensive than Applegreen in Celbridge. I haven't been in Dundrum in a while but for some reason Tesco there was always 5c cheaper than Maynooth.

In D15 regularly, and agree that petrol is suspiciously expensive there.

Usually people who do that went to school with the owner/know his brother/married to owner's cousin/don't like the lad that owns the cheaper one etc.

I came across this article in a Wexford Newspaper this morning it's about fuel prices.
It just goes to prove how much we on Dublin 15 are been ripped off by the various fuel companies.

At the time of writing (March 10th), the fuel prices on offer in Bunclody are:

    Apple Green – Petrol 132.8, Diesel 122.8
    Texaco – Petrol 132.9, Diesel 122.9
    Campus – Petrol 134.9, Diesel 123.9

I know its not D15 but if anyone is in Ratoath the Circle K on the Fairyhouse Road was 138.9 for Petrol and 126.9 for Diesel (not 100% on diesel as was buying Petrol )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Pat Dunne

Despite the recent reductions, I still note D15 has the dearest Diesel around at €123.8 per litre, Circle K Coolmine and Apple Green Clonsilla.
Just down the road in Ratoath, Diesel varies between €119.9 Fairyhouse and €122.9, Kings Gala Circle K and TOP Coolquay, Ashbourne Rd.
I know it’s only marginal, however it underlines my belief that there is a cartel in operation in the D15 area fixing the price of fuel.

Honestly I think its because petrol stations are thin on the ground and its such a residential area, the market will decide. The prices aren't identical enough to be a cartel, its just the type of local price disparity you get around the Country.

Thin on the ground? There are 10 off the top of my head in the d15 area.

So can I, but Dublin 15 must be 80+ square kilometers with a population of 200,000, the petrol stations are well spread out, except around Mulhuddart or up at the back of the business parks in Ballycoolin. They've more than enough trade each not to need to be cutthroat with the prices.

Personally every 2 or 3 weeks if I happen to be in town off peak I go to the station at Ushers Island on the Quays, no matter whether prices are high or low generally I've never seen it beaten on price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,584 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

I don't know how fuel isn't down to a euro a litre at this stage.

I don't know how fuel isn't down to a euro a litre at this stage.

Because oil needs to be in single dollars a barrel for that, if ever

For petrol, duty, carbon tax, NORA levy + VAT on the lot is ~76c before anything else

That would give 19c a litre for the actual petrol including all distribution and sales costs.

For diesel its in the low 30s.

And how many times has the place been closed by authorities, I can recall at least twice in the last few years, and I don’t pass it too often anymore.

Always be careful what you say as if you don't educate yourself to the correct information, you can be caught for defamation.

It is true that a fuel station in mount brown that traded there for a few years was closed and convicted of tax evasion. That was in 2011/2012.

The people who ran the station then (it did not have a brand over the canopy) closed down and have nothing whatsoever to do with the current station.

The station that is there now is an EMO Oil branded station and operates to the highest standards. It is owned by the Cox family who operate Cox's wholesale in Newbridge amongst other businesses and would be considered a first class business operator.

Btw, they also operate the Go Station on Kylemore road
