Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pruning large shrub

    Hi, I don't prune but I am told I need too.
    I have 2 large shrubs in garden and I love them but they are taking over. Not sure what they are but one has these lovely velvet blue flower type things on it in the summer.
    Can I cut them back hard now without killing them.

    We absolutely need to know what the shrubs are before being able to offer any advice! Can you put up pics please?

    Could the purple flowered one be a clematis, perhaps? Although that's more of a climber than a shrub...

    Sounds like it might be a blue ceanothus.

    You'd need to know what type it is to know about how best to prune it.

    The pic of the ceanothus in this article doesn't actually look like a lot of ceanothus so try 'google images' to see if that's the right plant.

    Buddleia, hydrangea, ceonothus, lilac - about all the blue flower shrubs I can think of!

    It's the "velvet" part that made me think of clematis, tbh. But maybe that referred more to the colour than the texture. Anyway, I'm dying to see the pictures, too, now.

    Its the 2nd one i want to really cut back hard, but dont what to kill it off.

    The Lilac has just got too big and the branches are too chunky, i will cut back and try and promote growth in the lower area of the plant.

    Ceanothus is what I thought of too- mine is currently in flower too:eek:
