The media, and this SmartTech crowd is incorrectly referring to the attack as Ransomware everywhere. This is not ransomware, its a website defacement with a ransom notice. Completely different ballgame

    How are you so sure?

Why ask for a bitcoin for a website defacement?

    Who are SmartTech as well?
They appear to have nothing to do with the attack or the security of the website.
They seem to be opportunists who have issued a generic blurb about cyber attacks to raise their profile.

Bitcoin is near impossible to track. There is websites that provide "mixing" services where you lodge your BTC, they mix it up with everyone else's lodged BTC and what you get back is thousands of very small amounts off other users to make back up your amount, websites usually charge a small % fee

But if it isn't ransomware (i.e. they have encrypted the database) then what service are they offering for the bitcoin?
they don't need the attackers help to kill a virus, just to get the data back.

They are claiming to have stolen some data from the site, and will release it publicly if a ransom is not paid.

Edit to update: Seems there was actually some information in newsletter signup area!

Over 3,000 Luas user records ‘may have been compromised’ in cyber attack - via Irish Times

The records are apparently newsletter sign ups. No financial info as per the article.

New luase.ie website was overall a joke, I was pointing issues few times, mentioned it on Commuting & Transport some time ago: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=106740390
Seems like they did not give a fox about website maintenance and security...

They got media coverage about 5 years ago regarding public WiFi and how they’re not secure etc - https://www.irishtimes.com/business/technology/irish-hotels-warned-of-wifi-security-threat-1.1624209?mode=amp

Previously a call centre venture, they’re now a team of “cyber security” experts throughout Europe

Don't think they were ever a call centre venture?

The guy who founded it also had or has a call centre business
