Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    That's an amazing scoreline.

Have Enniscorthy got some players back?

I heard it was 5.5-0.5 but maybe I misheard. Same Enniscorthy (home) team as usual

Dún Laoghaire 3.5-4.5 St Benildus. Just about keeps us in the hunt, but we need a big win v Enniscorthy and probably a win v Malahide too

Celbridge 5.5 - 1.5 Bray/Greystones. 1 board postponed due to player in Galway Congress.

St Benildus 4.5-2.5 Enniscorthy with final board on Wednesday

So the current standings assuming everyone gets points back -

Celbridge 9.7-43.5 (still to play Dún Laoghaire)
    St Benildus 9.7-43 (Malahide)
    Ballinasloe 9-41 (Elm Mount, Inchicore)
    Malahide 8.5-38.5 (Rathmines, St Benildus)
Dún Laoghaire 9-36.5 (Curragh, Celbridge; the Curragh game is live online at the moment - chessspectator.com)
    Rathmines 8-36.5 (Inchicore, Malahide, Phibsboro)

And I think everyone else is too far adrift at this stage

Ballinasloe could find themselves challenged if they win premonition as they had three walkovers v Enniscorthy, although many teams are winning the bottom 3 anyway, which would rule out a challenge.

Would Rathmines want two Armstrong teams if it happened?

Malahide have the toughest run-in and may yet regret that defeat by Enniscorthy (still 4.5-0.5 at present)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Looks like Curragh 2.5-3.5 Dún Laoghaire, but only six bidders played. Not sure if there was defaults or postponements

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Actually ended 4-2 to Dún Laoghaire; the other two boards were played midweek, but don't know how they ended.

Also, Phibsboro aren't out of it yet; they're on a higher percentage than we are.

So the updated state of affairs is -

Celbridge 9.7-43.5 (still to play Dún Laoghaire)
    St Benildus 9.7-43 (Malahide)
    Ballinasloe 9-41 (Elm Mount, Inchicore)
    Malahide 8.5-38.5 (Rathmines, St Benildus)
    Dún Laoghaire 9.6-40½ (Celbridge)
    Rathmines 8-36.5 (Inchicore, Malahide, Phibsboro)
Phibsboro 8-35 (Elm Mount, Inchicore, Rathmines)

Dún Laoghaire, Rathmines and Celbridge all scored 3/3 on the bottom three boards against Enniscorthy, so none of those could challenge Ballinasloe, who had three walkovers. We're on 2/2, with board 7 to play, so if we were to win that last board, then we couldn't challenge either. Phibsboro dropped half a point and lost to Ballinasloe, so they could challenge them if they ended up level on points, while Malahide have presumably lost a couple of points on the bottom boards, in which case they could also challenge.

It's looking very close at the bottom too (Enniscorthy aside, who are adrift and almost certainly doomed) -

    Bray 9.7-36½ (Elm Mount)
    Curragh 9.6-34½ (Enniscorthy)
Elm Mount 8-29½ (Phibsboro, Ballinasloe, Bray)
    Inchicore 8-27½ (Rathmines, Phibsboro, Ballinasloe)
    Enniscorthy 9.4-25 (Curragh)

So if, say, Elm Mount and Inchicore both got 6 points from their two matches in hand, then the top four of those would be 36½-35½-34½-33½, and Enniscorthy would be way back on 25. Elm Mount and Inchicore may yet regret those defaults.

3 games still to be played in Enn-Mal.

    Celebridge 43.5 9.7MP
    Benildus 43.5 10MP
    Dun Laoghaire 42 10MP
Ballinasloe, Phibsboro, Rathmines all on 41 9MP
    Malahide 38.5 8.5MP
    Bray 36.5 9.7MP
    Curragh 35 10MP
    Elm Mount 31.5 9MP
    Inchicore 31 9MP
    Enniscorthy 25.5 9.5MP

    Curragh on 35, not 45

    R10: Elm Mount 2-6 Ballinasloe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Retd.LoyolaCpt

    Inchicore 3-5 Phibsboro
Celbridge 5.5-2.5 Bray (the game O/S went Bray's way)

Malahide and Enniscorthy finish their match on April 13.

Big game tomorrow is Malahide vs Rathmines

    10MP unless stated
    Ballinasloe 47
    Phibsboro 46
    Celebridge 43.5
    Benildus 43.5
    Dun Laoghaire 42
    Rathmines 41 9MP
    Malahide 38.5 8.5MP
    Bray 37.5
    Curragh 35
    Inchicore 34
    Elm Mount 33.5
    Enniscorthy 25.5 9.5MP

Looks like promotion is down to Ballinasloe, Phibsboro, Rathmines and Malahide (Celbridge and Benildus need big scores against top 7 teams which have been incredibly hard to come by in this campaign).

Relegation is equally as interesting with 2 Armstrong regulars in the thick of it. Elm Mount (B) and Curragh are looking to avoid consecutive relegations while Inchicore have been in the Heidenfeld since 2007. Inchicore (playing Ballinasloe) have the trickiest final game with the others playing bottom 5 teams.

It was St Benildus B relegated from the Armstrong last year, not Elm Mount B.

Huge win for Ballinasloe alright. Have to be honest and say I thought they'd fade away over the course of the season, especially when their early good position was skewed by five walkover wins, but they're there on merit now.

Would they strengthen if they went up?

Apologies, I was way off: Elm Mount B were last in the Armstrong in 2014-15.

Ballinasloe have always seemed to struggle with continuity of selection - getting Rory, Denis (over 2000 now), Zalan, Tommy and Keegan would be a huge first step. I would guess they may struggle on the lower boards but I would have said something similar about Blanch this year and they were absolutely fine.

    Malahide 4 Rathmines 4.
Whilst not the result either team probably wanted, it keeps everything very close behind Ballinasloe for the second promotion spot

Any sign of rounds 7+8 going up for rating?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Retd.LoyolaCpt

I’m hearing 4-way tie for second with Rathmines going up on Tie-break. Confirmed by LCU site.

They beat Phibsboro and Celbridge and drew with Malahide. Malahide drew with all three. Phibsboro beat Celbridge, lost to Rathmines and drew to Malahide. Celbridge lost two and drew one.

As it stands, it looks like one up, one down for Rathmines; so the Armstrong will be a straight swap of Ballinasloe for Dun Laoghaire

I think it would have gone to game points rather than batch points, so Rathmines on 13 pipped Phibsboro and Malahide on 12.

Extraordinary finish to a great league though. And credit to Ballinasloe too, who I think I wrote off on this thread earlier in the year. Didn't think they had enough to stay on top, but can't argue with winning by 5 points

Well done to the Rathmines Heidenfeld team!! A great result to grab second place.

Yes indeed; no need for a challenge match in the Armstrong now.

PS: Since when was Ballinasloe in Leinster?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

    Cavan isn't either.

    Also, they play in Athlone

Did you find Gonzaga in a map of the UK?
