Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Badly needed refurb in Zaytoon, its been very shabby for a number of years now

It has. It must be one of the busiest restaurants in Dublin it's busy from when theyopen at 1230 to whenever they close 7 nights a week.

It amuses me that many of their daytime customers are young families, often observant muslims because it's halal certified whereas it's night time customers are the polar opposite.

Yeah the footfall through Zaytoon is something else, it usually 50% full during the day and then packed at nighttime. Its no wonder they need to spruce the place up with a refurb at this stage, I'm going there since about 2008 and cant ever remember it having any kind of work done between then and now.

Agree with the clientele, a lot of Muslims during the day and then the drinking crowds in the evenings. It also must have a very good rating on Trip Advisor because it gets a hell of a lot of toursts too. Am looking forward to going back when it is done up.

Just on Zaytoon, says closed for around one month from 7th Jan... Doesn't look anywhere near ready tbh.

Hot Chilli on Kevin Street do a great chicken kebab but I've only ever had it sober once.

I need to try out Passion 4 Food next time I'm in town.

passion 4 food on the northside and zaytoon on the south, very hard to beat.

passion 4 food on the northside

Are they both not on the southside!? D8 & D2!

Is this place still open. Probably the original Kebab place in Dublin. Was in a lane beside The Baggot in and Toners.. 1982/3ish

Had one of these not so long ago, it was awful.

Had a passion4food from clanbrassil street just there. Was lovely.

Is it better than zaytoon? I don't know, they're both equally delicious.

Next up maybe at the weekend will be Pasha.

I love passion4food, definitely my favourite. I had Zaytoon recently (the one on Parliament Street) and I wasn't crazy about it, my OH is the total opposite, down to individual tastes I suppose!

Pasha is my current favourite, used to be Five Tastes on Clabbrasil st but changed hands and was never the same, Kebabish a few door up was ok but not familiar with if they are still decent...

I tried that place at the junction of capel and abbey st the other day.

    Ephesus I think it’s called

Would not recommend and won’t be going back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,068 ✭✭✭MarkY91

    Just back from Pasha.

It wasn't bad but I'd certainly choose zaytoon and passion4food over it.

I’ve had so many kebabs out of that place, and couldn’t properly tell you if they are good or not. They more than do the job if you’re full to the brim with drink.

Passion4food is still my favourite. Even though I tend to order the charcoal chicken in there these days. There’s always guards waiting around for food when I’m there - seems to be a favourite of the police force. The lads working there are as sound as a pound as well.

Zaytoon every time. The standard has pretty much remained the same over the years. I used to live close-by to the one in Temple Bar and had it during the daytime and it was just as good as the 2AM experience :)

I'm currently living the US and this thread now has me salivating for a damn Zaytoon! Damn you boards.ie!!!!

Ate in Momo's in Tallaght a few evenings ago. As said portion sizes are huge, I'd guess there was around 400g of meat on the plate, it was massive along with the salad (which had olives in it which quickly got scooped out).

Got the mixed kebab meal which came with bread, two dips and a bowl of homemade chips which were pretty decent. If you ordered an extra bread it would be enough for two people, bit of a bargain for 7.95. However the meat was dry, they cook it on one of those revolving gas spits, something that only works well if the place is very busy and meat is constantly being cut off it. If its not busy the meat gets over cooked and dry like I had. Also the bread didnt come on a large plate but instead in a bowl and cut in four piices which was pretty frustrating assembling a kebab out of four times in a row. Overall its not bad and if the meat hadn't of been dry it would have be decent enough. Would try it again but at the same time its not on the level of Zaytoon. Gonna try Passion 4 Food soon to see what its like.

Anyone know a decent kebab in Galway? Pasha, p4p, zaytoon type. Not chipper crap. I'm dying for a kebab but having a weekend in Galway. The heartbreak!!

Was in pasha this evening, was pretty good but no where near at the level of passion4food. The chicken wings were awful, especially compared to the nice charred ones in passion.

    Zaytoon 100% unreal food

Had Passion 4 food on camden street last weekend, (sober if that makes any diff) and thought it was unreal, superior to Zaytoon by far, excellent and fresh ingredients not that zaytoons aren't.

One negative is they seem to close early? (twas a friday night)

will prob check out the original spot on clanbrassil next.

I'm checking out the Clanbrassil Street one this evening, dying to see if it's any nice than the Camden Street one (don't think that's possible though!)

    Someone here said its nicer.

I've recently tried both and noticed no difference

The one in clanbrassil street is very small, I think they have an upstairs though?

The other on is big and spacious so if I have the choice, I'd go for George's street one

I definitely noticed a difference, the Clanbrassil Street one was better, the lamb in the doner was proper slices of lamb, really good, only downside was there was bits of fat in the mix but to be expected with lamb. But saying that I do like the other one too.

Passion4food if you're in the area or Zaytoon for me. I think I prefer Zaytoon over Passion4food to be honest.

If anyone is going to Kilkenny, try the Kebab House on Friary Street, it's the best kebab I've had in Ireland.

I've tried all 3 sober btw

  • Registered Users Posts: 557 ✭✭✭Walter Bishop

Sums up the kebab market that people have to qualify their reviews with 'I ate this while sober btw!!' :)

If drunk kebabs came into it we'd have a totally different thread. I've never had a bad kebab while drunk

I'm back for a week in March :D I've not had a potter around my home city in about 6-7 years. I'm definitely taking some time to have a nose about (trips home are usually me racking up lots of miles visiting in-laws, funk that this time!) so I'm planning my route based on a lot of these recommendations. Gonna be a fat baxtard and enjoy it immensely!

    Drunk kebabs list.
    1. ABRAKEBABRA( Anywhere)
    2. Rick's Burgers (Dame Street)
    3. Hot Spice (clanbrassil street)

The above are All ****e by the way.

    Sober kebab list.
    1. Islanders (Dame Street)
    2.Babylon (Camden street)
    3. Zaytoon

    Sober list obviously clearly better.

Iskanders was great once. now it is a festering kip where the staff hate kebabs, hate people and hate life. do not go there.
    Go to Passion4Food or Zaytoon.

I definitely had a burger in Rick's once upon a time, mostly sober iirc, I don't recall being offended - it doesn't strike me as a place to get a kebab though

Seating where though? They can't put it outside front door path be lucky to get 2 people past side by side and then side windows are next to family courts.

I agree with those mentioning P4F and Zaytoon. They’d be my top 2 alright.

Another one I'd consider pretty good is Altoon in Dundrum. Granted it’s close enough to where I live but it’s definitely a lot better than the “average” kebab.

Iskanders has gone to the dogs

I tried their lunchtime “special” last week

Tenner for it. Very meagre amount of chips. Loads of stale lettuce. Gristle meat.

Maybe I got a bad one but it’s not the first time.

Their lunch special is nothing compared to zaytoon around the corner from them
