Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone know what the story is with broadband in Seagreen?

I have heard that a few people, who moved in a while ago, are still without. Apparently the developers are saying the ball is Eircom's court, and Eircom are saying the opposite.

    Sounds like fun.

Going to go book a visit with them next week and see what we can change for free and what costs more.

Will def do before they start.

    Thanks,
    Dave
How did you get on? Did you make any of the changes you wanted?

Is Eircom the only provider that is on offer up there? I was hoping Virgin might be putting down some cables as I'd seen them doing work in Redford recently.

Well Eircom own all the lines don't they? Eircom need to put a line into the house before any other operator can use it. As far as I know.

Eircom is over a different cable, fibre or copper - Hopefully it's fibre and not old-tech copper!! For Virgin, they're always on a separate cable they own themselves. They have this super duper DOCSIS technology over coax which brings Virgin Media's services. Any word of VM being in the development?

Hmm, I rang Virgin yesterday and they have no record of the Seagreen estate. When I spoke to Eir they said they had heard form other customers at Seagreen. But I couldn't get much more info out of them.

I'm just worried that there is some ongoing dispute between Eir and the developers and that it won't be sorted out quickly. I work from home so I will need to get the broadband set up rather fast.

coming from someone with no vested interests, the providers all come from the same central switch. they have no control over this. seagreen is clearly not connected to this switch one way or another, for now, it would be very surprising if this was fully facilitated during early periods of construction...which it still is. i'd recommend a mobile dongle which should provide decent connectivity from the nearby masts in the wood above as i wouldn't hold my breath on fibre or otherwise anytime soon.

that's not correct - Virgin's network is entirely separate (as is Siro's though they haven't started installing in Greystones yet). Other providers are reliant on Eircom lines.

It's ludicrous if Eircom aren't preinstalling fibre into all new estates now, they've stated they're going to have all areas covered within the next 5 years, they might as well take the opportunity while estates are under construction.

The developers are the selectors of the service providers.
I guess they are still negotiating , pitting one against the other.
Nothing will happen until this is concluded.

No fibre cabinet has been provision / installed yet in Seagreen. Eir / KNN field engineers are waiting on connectivity back to the Greystones exchange before lines can be pulled into the estate and into residents homes. This will be easy to do once the initial connectivity is complete as the underground trunks are all brand new, Greystones exchange is 1000mb fibre enabled so residents should eventually have the option of both fibre to the cabinet (last leg between cabinet and home is over traditional copper) or fibre to the home.

Once fibre is available, residents will also be able to choose from other providers to get the best value for money.
All apart from VM & Siro rely on Eir's core infrastructure to provide service.

My advice, keep the pressure on the developers to engage with Eir and get a fibre cabinet installed to serve the initial stages of the development.

Someone else already mentioned a mobile dongle, this is a very viable option in the interim as the mobile masts are located up in Kindlestown forest so signal strength should not be an issue.

Spoke with the developers only last week and they are aware of Eir's requirements to complete connectivity back the exchange. They mentioned that VM were a bit late to the party when it came to approaching them about putting in their own infrastructure so not sure how or when they will be providing connectivity to the area.

I'll be following this closely myself as will also require broadband from day 1 due to working from home.

Mobile signal is poor at Temple Carrig School (for Three at least).

Must check both 3G and 4G signals on Eir Network.

As an interim measure, I would recommend a Huawei modem (B593 or it's replacement) instead of a dongle for mobile broadband.
Superior performance, multi user and connects via Ethernet or WiFi.
Connect your laptop, smart phones and tablets.

If the 4G Three signal is good then you can use "all you can eat" data for €20/month on prepay. Other providers may have similar offers.

Virgin Media are available in Rathdown Park, which is about 2 kilometers from Seagreen.

Their broadband service is faster than anything Eir are offering. They're very open to new estates, this is a screwup by the developers. Get onto VM, see if they can get access. They're in Greystones, they have fiber drops nearby.

How did you get on with your snagging? We have a date for ours now! Did you catch much in the process and were they quick to deal with it?

We moved in 2 weeks ago as we had to draw down on mortgage. Still a few outstanding items on the snag list that need to be completed and we are finding other new things that need to be fixed too. Taking an age to get them completed and getting any response from builder is a struggle. The builders look to be busy getting the last few houses ready for moving in so I guess I'm at the end of the priority list now that we've moved in.

VM have fiber very close by. Ask your developer are they available? They are obliged to offer co-operation to various providers

I find it mind-boggling that the developpers do not provide broadband access as standard or at least don't provide cable ducts etc so that new home owners have to connectand go!

I'm sure they've laid ducts, it's the arrangements to allow Eir or Virgin into those ducts that seem to be delayed.

as i understand it the ducts are in place, but only wired up to the first one by eir (by the site office - who have broadband).
to enable connection to any house past 89 (who as i understand it also have broadband @50mbps) the other ducts need to be connected and eir need to do this, once this is done you can take any provider.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 685 ✭✭✭Whatwicklow

Slight correction to the above - You can't get any provider thru an Eir duct.

You can get Eir or a reseller of Eir products .

    Are you sure about that?

My understanding is the eir is obliged to allow other service providers to use their infrastructure. This obligation was enacted because eir and it's predecessors were dominant in the market.
I understand there are current complaints being investigated by the regulator against eir by other service providers due to delays in repairing faults on shared/leased infrastructure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,684 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

What he means is that you can get any provider that is allowed to resell telephone and broadband over eir networks. What is of interest to most is if Virgin Media, which uses different technology over a different cable, will be brought into the developement. VM don't use eir's network for providing services.

    Hey all,

due to snag in the coming weeks and was looking into our broadband options as my wife works from home 1 day a week. Has anyone gotten Wicklow Broadband in, and if so are they any good? Otherwise what are people who are in now doing? I'm going to assume that we'll be waiting on a long term resolution......

    Cheers,
    John.

Wicklow Broadband provides me about 6MB most of the time (it fails completely from time to time) for €40 per month. Compared to fibre it is not great, but if it is all you can get it is a lot better than nothing.

I'm in Seagreen and have efiber since October as I was under contract with Eir in my previous house, they ran a line directly to my house.

You can download an app on the App Store for free. Just do a quick search for "speed test".

Anybody else manage to get eir bb into their house on the estate yet? I tried before Christmas but got caught in limbo between eir a third party installer called knc (i think) and the builders.

I got talking to eir who said they'd need to get someone to give me a call back. Still waiting for that. :pac:

Our snag date has been delayed again so have been more focused on that for now than broadband. But when I was speaking to them (the week before last) they said that nobody had broadband in SeaGreen at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 Mhogan1

I'm there and have broad band since October with Eir. There is a Facebook page set up for residents search Seagreen residents.

The network guys were installing cables for the phones just after Christmas so I'm not sure if the rest of the houses now have it

Hope it's ok to ask this but since lots of people here have recently bought houses just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a local solicitor for conveyancing.
And if it's not ok to mention here could you pm me please.
What's the going rate these days?
    Thank you.

Hi, wondering if anyone has recommendations for contacts to snag the house? We're due to began snagging in April (hopefully) so looking to get quotes. Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has made changes to the kitchen or other bits and pieces.

We are considering changing the kitchen and putting in a breakfast bar to the 4 bed house (converted 3 bed) and also changing location of radiators and electric fire (also changing fire).

Has anyone done anything similar? I am trying to visualise what the changes might look like and tonne honest struggling to imagine from plans

    Thanks
    Dave

    Hey Dave,

We made some changes to our kitchen, put in a double oven and moved a few things around. I know someone that put in a breakfast bar too. Nolan's kitchens are well worth a visit to talk through what you want to do. We found them very helpful in clarifying the ideas we had.

Changing the location of radiators needs to be done early enough as far as I know. We removed the electric fire altogether and they are giving us 625 euro for it towards other changes we want to make.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Dave,

yeah we made a couple of changes. Double oven as well in the kitchen but that was it in terms of the units.

We changed the rads in the living room and the kitchen to upright rads and put them back to back either side of the wall behind the doors to the hall. Makes better use of the space.

We got rid of the electric fire as well. In a house that well insulated it's not really needed unless you like the aesthetic. And as Papav3r said you get a few quid back from that. Between moving the rad and getting rid of the fire you can free up a decent bit of space in the living room.

We also made some changes to the electrics and the wardrobes. Nothing crazy, but I'd say it's definitely worth having a think about where you want plug sockets and that as well as whether you want shelving in the wardrobes. We also have asked fora hdmi faceplate to be put in so that we can run the hdmi cables in behind the wall:

    mdUtrLjPppcPmP-0x9JYp2g.jpg

Pretty handy if you want to mount the TV on the wall.

Another thing to note is that the light over the bend in the stairs in the show house doesn't seem to be standard and without it that area can be fairly dark. It's worth making sure they put that in.

    Hi Dave,

We made such changes to the kitchen. Added a breakfast bar and also modified most of the drawers to integrate bins etc. As mentioned Nolans were really helpful so well worth the cost.
We moved radiators too, this has to be done at early foundation stages however.

Everyone we've encountered so far has been very helpful, we've a month or so to go before snag.

I see that the developers of Seagreen haven't registered as a qualifying contractor yet for the Help to Buy scheme. It's strange that this has taken them so long, I hope there are no issues with them qualifying. They will have to pull the finger out or interest in the next phase will be impacted big time I'd imagine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 bizl

As of today they have been added to the list of qualifying contractors. Good news for anyone intending to apply for the help to buy.

It fits a combined washer and dryer but not both. The houses are on view tomorrow between 2 and 4 if you need to take another look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭Blingy

I'm really surprised it doesn't fit both. Bit of a poor design in that case.

I don't really use a dryer so not a major issue for me but I'll still buy a combo machine. That said, I don't have children so I'm not washing huge quantities of clothes... yet.
