Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Low flying loud plane Last night/this morning

    Did anybody else hear a really loud low plane overnight?

    Sounded really old fashioned.
    Mayo area.

    You had a Cavok Air, Antonov AN-12 fly over this morning just after 5am. From St Johns in Canada heading to Eindhoven. It was at about 27,000ft.

    Can I ask, is it a novelty that they use that plane?
    Survey there are more efficient planes?

    Not complaining, I thought it was cool but sounded like a real old fashioned plane

    They have certain niche uses. While less efficient overall than more modern aircraft, they can carry certain sizes and weights of cargo without carrying a whole lot of empty plane with them which the more modern and efficient cargo aircraft might be doing, making it more economical on the bottom line.

    Definitely the noisiest plane over Ireland. Fascinated every time one flies over people get so interested. It’s a good thing.

    Not paticularly, An-12 fuel consumption in cruise is about 1,900kg/hr which is half a tonne less than a 737-400 freighter. Total payload is about the same, so if you want something bulky moved and don't care about time taken then might as well go by Annie Antonov. Loading is also much easier and the crew often have nice things to trade for soda bread ( true story! ).

    Quite common. I hear it often enough - twice in the last week or two iirc.


    Another advantage they have is rear-loading.

    I heard it during the night about a month ago heading over. Some noise out of it.

    Very low cruising altitude too for something going transatlantic.

    Just heard one of these flying overhead-ish. Track was about 10 miles south but it was so loud.

    I do like when this query comes up. While ex-Soviet aircraft where known for their noise I think its very interesting to see the difference with older tech and new modern aircraft in terms of noise pollution. When you see the comments about noise near the airport I think it missed that aircraft are getting quieter all the time.
    I can remember the noise of those old Aer Lingus and Ryanair B732s, which is only 20-25 years ago really.

    I tend to type in CVK, UKL, RSB, VKA or MTL on FR24 to see if any are flying over this neck of the woods. The latter two have AN26's. Two less engines, but just as loud as the AN12's.

    I like hearing them flying over Dublin to or from Shannon. I very rarely hear of any going to Dublin Airport. I'm sure the noise would be much louder, in that case.

    Others are VDA or ADB for 124's, the 225, or the odd Ilyushian IL76's.

    Planes aren’t cars, they are designed to operate for several decades. With good maintenance they can easily operate longer. DC-3s are still in service in Alaska and the Artic.
