Someone had commented to ask if someone who was volunteering could bring their dog cos they won't volunteer without the dog and they were told they could. Strikes me as a bit unfair - you can visit Lough Key anytime and bring your dog, you can volunteer at the parkrun with your dog but you can't actually walk or run the parkrun with along with your dog.

It should be all or nothing. A parkrun I've done a few times has a no dogs policy. But that's due to the park in which it's located, no dogs are allowed in it, you cannot have dogs on the grounds of the park, or at parkun, running or volunteering.

Sorry if I'm repeating a discussion that's probably already been had about dogs at parkrun.

I wouldn't let any dog into any park anywhere full stop, no fault to the dogs, scumbag humans, I'm sick of avoiding sh1t.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭cjt156

By that logic we should ban all humans from parks because some people don't pick up their litter.

Irresponsible dog owners are a$$holes, no question, but you can't punish us responsible ones along with them.

Naas have a no dogs policy too. Makes sense considering it is a racecourse.

Did my last Lough Key park run yesterday as the dog ban is now in effect. I know I could do it without a dog but I'm not a runner, I'm a canicrosser.

Well that is a terrible terrible shame. Poor dogs - the innocent victims yet again.

As mentioned above - it seems quite unfair that dogs - who are allowed to be walked in the park at all times and who are allowed to be part of parkrun once their owners are volunteering - would be banned from taking part in the run.

We have an awful problem at my local PR with under 11s running out of arm's reach of their parents. Any chance of getting them permabanned?

It's the same in Lough Key and I know it's a huge concern to the core team, it's in a forest, beside a lake with a couple of hundred strangers but parents seem to have no problem letting their children out of their sight. I don't know how it can be policed any better though, people tend to get very defensive when you question their parenting skills

It does make sense to have a ban on dogs in narrow courses once they reach certain numbers, but from the photos / videos it didn't look like numbers were particularly massive at that event.

Cardiff which I ran this weekend is on narrow paths, particularly at the start, and I didn't notice any dogs this weekend. But I didn't see any mention of them being banned there and they have approaching 1000 runners. I could understand it at an event like Cardiff, but not a relatively small trail course where dogs are welcome otherwise.

The spina bifida story is frustrating when you consider Bushy Park London has part of its volunteer roster dedicated to those with a visual impairment.

Have you done the Severn crossing one? I hate driving across those bridges, don't think I could run across

Yep, it's pretty windy though. Great view and a very fast finish. Despite being a couple of feet from a motorway doesn't feel like it, although I've run across a few times on training runs too.

She lives in the UK and has spina bifida. After listening to me raving about park run last year she went along to her local one, she volunteered a couple of times and then joined in on her hand cycle. Apparently complaints from other participants led to the apparatus now being on the website as being banned.
I realise that technically it's a bike but it's powered by her, someone could push her in a wheelchair, or she could use an electric chair or her mobility scooter but that wouldn't be her doing it. She can't afford a racing wheelchair and unfortunately is now very disillusioned with park run. There have to be rules, of course there do but it's a real shame that it's not as inclusive as I'd thought.
All I seem to have done recently is complain about park run, I do love it and am looking forward to some tourism next week and a volunteering stint the following week

This is about the sh1ttiest thing I've ever heard. Who the hell objects to a person with disabilities taking part? Parkrun are worse to capitulate.

The reason its banned is because its a bike, If they are allowed them kids on bikes would have to be allowed.

Don't see why they would need to allow kids on bikes if they allowed hand cycles?

They have an exclusion about being able to get participation credit for being pushed around in a wheelchair, or using a motorised chair, only if you have a long term condition that means that is why you are in the chair. It's not like I'll be trying to claim credits for the buggy passenger once they turn 4 years old if I still happen to be pushing them around on occasion.

Doesn't require any particularly special wording of the terms to say "bikes are not permitted. Long term disabled participants in self propelled wheelchairs or hand cycles can take part where the course conditions permit it".

Hi all - I'm planning a trip to London soon and I'm wondering - are there any decent, cheap hostels near to Bushy London? Price range would be 40euro per night for a room in a dorm.

    Thanks

Woo hoo. Wanaka this morning. Tough with a 600m hill to the finish but what an amazing location. Brilliant. They are a year next week. Lovely team and crew. A few other tourists this morning too. Really spectacular.

    A lovely post on them.

    Darndale parkrun is cancelled tomorrow.

Seen that on their facebook page.

Fair play to the people behind Darndale parkrun for their persistence in trying to get the event going.

Is there a more challenging location in the entire country?. It would be such a positive thing for that community if parkrun took off down there.

    Here's hoping.

Now the anxiety of waiting for the parkrun email confirming my time (or not).. I'd one of those finishes where the scanner wasn't sure if she'd scanned it right but I'm also not sure if I heard the beep.

Time doesn't bother me at the moment because I'm mentoring on a C25k group, but I'd hate to have a parkrun unrecorded too.

Hope everyone had a great parkrun today, as usual I'd a fantastic one. And after spending most of Thursday night, Friday morning into the evening in Beaumont A&E with my daughter (she's home resting now) I wasn't much in the mood for running today.

But I'm committed to this group so got out, and I'm delighted I did now.

    Edit

    I was scanned :)

2 seconds off a pb today.
Should I have started closer to the front?
Should I have taken the time to high 5 my little girl on the way by?
Maybe I shouldn't have drank 3 pints yesterday?
Could I have gained a second or 2 on the first lap?
If I had done a different warm up would it have helped?

    The torment!!!!!

Few months back I was trying desperately to break 19min, had been getting within 10 seconds fairly regularly, and then one day crossed the line, and my watch said 19:00
I knew it takes me a half second or whatever to stop my watch so was pretty sure the timer would have me at 18:59
waited a few hours for the email - 19:00
Life got in the way since and I'm back closer to 20:00
    :(

It's a race against your past/future self. Some times you're not on form or in the mood so you're just a participant and assume 2nd place is what you're going to achieve. That one time though... you smash it... feels good.

Cheer's.. Its an ongoing issue I'm afraid.. Can't get into it too much here but Valentines Day last year I found her at home very ill, ambulance to Beaumont Hospital, internal bleeding which eventually resulted in cardiac arrest, four hours in resus trying to stop the bleeding, trying to save her life and succeeding. Then because she's type O neg the hospitals supplies were running low and they'd to send out a text alert for type O neg people on their register to go give blood (even typing this is filling me up).

The most terrifying day of my life, my families life.

Right, won't make it a long one but I'll use this to say if anyone here has ever given blood, THANK YOU. And if anyone here ever considers giving and wonders just how important your donation is ~ you really are giving someone the chance of life.

    Happy thoughts now :D

Because I'm mentoring on a C25k group I haven't been chasing down parkrun times but having a great time with the group. But looking forward to getting back out on my own and doing some parkrun touring.

Can anyone tell me which Parkrun would be nearest Belfast (Central?) when getting the train up from Dublin Connolly?. Also anything worth seeing in that vicinity ?. Might go up a friday night and stay until saturday afternoon. Advice appreciated, thanks :)

Did Tullow parkrun yesterday and its a lovely route of 2 laps in the forest. Really good set up and had a nice chat with a few of the volunteers before we headed off. Really nice touch was the permanent km markers they have on the route and the parkrun signs with arrows.

Ormeau or Stranmillis College are probably the closest to the city centre?

Belfast is definitely worth a full weekend if you can manage it. The Titanic Exhibition is definitely worth a visit, but it takes a couple of hours to get around. I'd also highly recommend doing a Black Taxi tour - it's just the taxi driver tour guide and whoever you're travelling with. They take you around all of the "interesting" sites in Belfast and give the perspective of both sides in the conflict.

Belfast has lots of lovely parkruns and you won't be disappointed no matter which you chose but for me, it has to be Waterworks- its the home of parkrun in Ireland, our Bushy so to speak and it has a great atmosphere.

It is where we started, will always be spiritual home, of course we want to. There is still a lot of moving parts going on and negotiations on going. OPW are still working out there.

I know that is a very political answer, but we can't confirm either way until 100% certain.

We have a great setup in the racecourse as an alternative, not sure if you have been. We can't be treated any better. We have full access to toilets and members bar to provide tea & coffee afterwards.

Yep - I've been to the racecourse, and it certainly has its advantages.

I was just being nosy as I spotted the festival of running is being held at the castle - I couldn't imagine running for 24 hours on that surface, even if I was able to run for 24 hours, but that's an aside - and I was just wondering if that meant parkrun would return.

It is a popular name. There is a Johnstown outside Naas and another one near Navan with Johnstownbridge near Enfield.
