So like the title says roll call. Tell us a little about yourself?

I am 22 and live in Dublin. I was born here and my parents are from Pakistan (Kashmir to be specific). I recently graduated from DIT with a Computers Science degree. Currently I am a lazy bum :D.

I am not really a practicing Muslim either, but sure this forum seems interesting enough.

Well I hope to drop in once in a while. I also hope that any debate will enlighten more than divide. A bit of a laugh once in a while wouldn't go amiss either.

BTW Poblachtach, you got your wish so I reckon you can change the first part of your sig now. :)

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Sorry - 56k drives me mad. Ill change the sig

Seb. A bum. THE bum, I should say.

Agnostic, tryin' to learn more bout world religions so's I can understand them better. A neverending task, given how many there are (numerous). But Islam is the world's largest after Christianity, so that makes learning about it a priority.

I also have in-laws who are of the Baha'i faith which also holds that Muhammad was a prophet, but also believes the teachings of a prophet who came afterwards, a few centuries ago in fact, called Baha Ullah (I think).

So if I learn about Islam I'll vicariously be learning a lot of Baha'i as well!
    Cunning, eh?

    Hi I'm frank.

I suppose I'm Christian but I see Islam and Christianity being very similar. I have no plans to convert.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,747 ✭✭✭✭wes

There are a lot similarities, a lot more than some people would think.

Rob. Uncompromising, hard-line atheist, but was arguing in favour of this board on the Forums thread, so thought I may as well pop in.

Paul, not a believer in organised religion and know SFA about Islam. I'd like to know a bit more though, not going to convert or anything but seeing as how it's the 2nd largest religion in the world, it's really something people should at least know the basics of.

The links in the sticky are quite good, some interesting reading on the Qur'an.

Ignorance is bliss. Not in reference to your agnostic ways, but of your unwant to be informed of other people religions)

I was born in Ireland, but have been living in the Middle East since 1982, first in Saudi and now in UAE.

Poblachtach, I was surprised (dunno why) to see you are only 15! Are you of Irish origin btw, as you say your friends from Kashmir introduced you to Islam? Hope you don't mind me asking, but I would have thought an irish convert is a fairly unusual thing...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,715 ✭✭✭marco murphy

Dont mind at all. Some very high up scholars are irish converts. Yes iam 15 and why lie about it?
Theres quite a few good pakistanis and arabs here and are very nice people.
They have stacks of islamic books to read so i have a good introduction.
I also listen to Dr Zakir Naik's lectures - hes very informative.
    :)

Whereabouts in UAE? I used to live in Abu Dhabi for a number of years in the 70's. It was pretty barren at the time, I hear it's beautiful now.

I am not Christened, have no religion. I'm interested in the Islam forum to learn about Islam with regards to the current events of the radical Islamists. Most of my questions are getting answered so far.

Hi, Gordon, I live in Abu Dhabi in fact, and used to live in Jeddah before that. I hear AD has changed enormously since the 70s, even since the 80s. Yes, it's pretty and surprisingly green, and now is home to the Emirates Palace, the most luxurious hotel (the largest?) in the world.

Still miss the bonhomie and liveliness of Jeddah, though. No bars or clubs meant you socialised in people's homes instead, and it was fun!

Assalamu alaikum wwb (Peace be upon you) !

I am a Dutch national of Pakistani origin and have been living in Ireland since 2 years. At the age of 15 I moved from the Netherlands to Pakistan for Islamic Studies.

I hold a Master degree in Islamic Studies and a Master degree in Arabics from Minhaj-ul-Quran International University in Lahore.
I worked for one year as research scholar in Dr. Farid-ud-Din Research Institute ( www.research.com.pk )
Currently I am serving as a Sheikh in North Dublin Islamic Centre ( www.minhajireland.org) and doing PhD research on “Human Rights in Islam”.

I am happy to see that there is an Irish forum where we can share our views and knowledge and learn from each other about Religion generally and Islam specifically.

    Wassalaam ,

    Qadri
