The backwards compatibility on Xbox One (I'm playing on the X) is amazing and is definitely one area that MS maintain bragging rights. I find it astounding that I can play ~20 year old games from my original XBox and they still hold up today. At the moment I'm playing Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, a game that probably pushed the original XBox. The bump in resolution makes it look great. Another one that springs to mind is Panzer Dragoon Orta (on Game Pass I believe).

In the past I would have said that backwards compatibility is a bit of a gimmick and dismissed it out of hand. However with the effort MS is putting into this I feel it is a key feature of the XBox going forward.

Its funny, you'd often get a bit nostalgic for consoles our our youth, that if not held onto, are now confined to attics or dumps and lost forever. at least for the future, MS looks to be trying to make that a thing of the past.

I was checking the PS5 threads yesterday, and someone correctly pointed out the huge disparity of posts between that one and this about the Xbox Series X. I've noticed the same around the web - coverage about the PS5 seems to be quite a bit more widespread than that of the Xbox. Heck, the last message here is from 3 weeks ago.

As someone who doesn't really care about loyalties (I ended up with an Xbox one because the PS4 lineup of driving games was woeful for a long time waiting for the "holy grail" of Gran Turismo...oh and the DualShock 4 ins't great) and will end up buying whichever console I'll find the most suitable for me (or maybe both if the exclusives are worth it), the question is...has MS fecked up the marketing AGAIN?

I can't help feeling something in terms of presentation is off with the XSX, and this might hurt the product in the long run - which would be a shame as they seem to be doing a great job technically and the Xbox ecosystem, with GamePass et all is objectively going in the right direction.

Unless MS pulls a blinder in terms of price (were I think we're all in for bad surprises, both from Sony and MS), can we be in for a repeat of the Xbox One fiasco, albeit in a slightly less disastrous (read: no bloody Kinect) way?

It come down to Microsoft first party game which we see come july. The thing about Microsoft they don't care how many consoles they sell because there games are also on pc.

Were as sony has to have good exclusives to sell ps5 hardware which sony does well at can't see this next gen being any different doh Microsoft will have a bigger market share this time around.

There is pages and pages of speculation over the price. I take your point though. I frequent that thread quite a bit as, for me, it is all next gen related. What is applicable to the PS5 is largely relevant to the Series X. Post the July 2020 event I'm sure that we'll see an increased level of chatter/ activity here.

I think XBox are doing a far better job this time around. They lost me on the XBox One (I did eventually get an X) having been a day one adopter for both the XBox and the 360. I'll be getting a Series X day 1 thoiugh.

In saying that it's hard to see MS taking the lead next gen though. In saying that I thought the PS3 would crush the 360. Didn't actually qork out that way.

for me personally, Its more that my decision is already made to stick with XBOX, and if the price is mad, I'll go PC.
    the main reasons for this

I've a huge xbox library built up, that I'm not about to leave behind.
All my peripherals will travel forwadr, including a tasty headset thats not even 3 months old.
I've gamepass ultimate for the next 3 years which will be beneficial one either PC or xbox.
I hate the dualshock contoller stick position. It just feels wrong to me.

The reason the ps4 thread is kinda hopping is down to the fact that the very design of the console was surrounded in secrecy for so long, and now the next step is the inevitable game of chicken as to the price of the units.

Microsoft have gone for a very straightforward, open strategy with regards to marketing. It's informative rather than cock-teasing. That leads to less speculation and a smaller volume of speculative posts online.

Whether that is the right strategy, I don't know.

They've also stated they are not interested in hardware sales. It's about subscriptions.

It has to be said though the exclusives situation is yet to be addressed. Halo and Forza just doesnt excite people. I think they will when people see them but for now not even xbox fans have much interest in speculating on those soecific games.

They've an E3 style games conference coming g up in July. If that disappoints then I'd be talking about them fluffing things again.

With all the talk about pushing Smart delivery for games between the two gens. That was a big announcement for Xbox. Some devs are coming out saying that games will get a free upgrade to the PS5. Do you think it will be the same thing? is Smart delivery just a fancy word for upgrade.

Or will they differ in the fact with smart delivery your process carries over?

    Just a musing on it.

I think the way they're leveraging their platform as a whole, is to take away the emphasis on exclusives and emphasize the value for money proposition.
both consoles essentially run the same games for the most part, but game pass / ultimate / play anywhere is an incredible deal.

EDIT - just one random thought - at the moment, I'm loving crossplay with people on ps4 & pc in titles like warzone. If we see more and more of that, id be happy.

That's a very good point - many posts are actually price speculation (a lot of people, myself first and foremost, are bracing for a very, very bad surprise on both ends).

That's my take as well - objectively, looks like MS is doing a better job all around; On the other hand, I've learnt my vision as "power user", engineer and generally enthusiast, means pretty much jack sh1t in the market which is made by the totally-not-savvy masses.

I know a couple of people working in a big gaming retail chain in Ireland (no points to guess which one, I don't think there's more than one...) - one of them is on a shop floor, he tells me they've been taking preorders for both, and it's pretty much only PS5 preorders they got - about 40 of them, actually - without even knowing the price.

The other one works in the offices - and she was going on about the fact the company are banking a lot on the end of the year, when the "new Playstation" comes out. When I mentioned the Xbox, she didn't know what it was.

I've gamepass ultimate for the next 3 years which will be beneficial one either PC or xbox.
I hate the dualshock contoller stick position. It just feels wrong to me.

Gamepass is quite the ultimate deal - and I also love that some of the games you can play on PC, move to the Xbox and resume where you left and vice-versa.

As for the Dualshock 4, yeah the position of the sticks never sat well with me, but I had and still have no issue with the DualShock 2 (I have a restored and softmodded PS2). The DS4 just has a weird feel to it...light, hollow, mushy buttons, plasticky...feels like a Chinese knockoff. And that touchpad is the ultimate exercise in futility :D

They've also stated they are not interested in hardware sales. It's about subscriptions.

I'm not sure how are they banking on selling "subscriptions" without selling the hardware - the only way I see is for people to get the subscriptions on PC, and we know it's not gonna happen, at least not in the numbers a console would move.

Halo and Forza - as much as I like both franchises, they're stale, gotta admit it. Forza especially, for a while it was the king of "car collector" games, it's been thoroughly ruined by half-arsed support and the kiddy wreckfest horror that is the Horizon series (which obviously ranks up a lot of cash, so it's gonna take precedence over the track-based Forza from now on).

EDIT - just one random thought - at the moment, I'm loving crossplay with people on ps4 & pc in titles like warzone. If we see more and more of that, id be happy.

Crossplay is something that should be a given, segregation of players is idiotic. I can see the business reason 'though - the only reason I've ever considered getting a PS4 to complement my Xb1 is because I have family and friends playing on PSN.

I'm not terribly surprised at the fact that the PS5 is more popular all over the internet, there's simply far more PS owners. Sony get to set the agenda when it comes to the next generation, and Microsoft, despite recovering from an absolutely horrific self inflicted launch, just don't have the mindshare.

In my opinion, if Microsoft gets to 50/50 parity with Sony in this generation, then it'll be a massive success. That 3rd party Inside Xbox aside, they're making all the right moves so far, but it's still a massive uphill struggle for them.

You dont need a knew console, not for 2 years at least.

Game pass is in its relative infancy, they cant turn around and start hosting games that require a new 500 eur console.

It looks like Sony are using the 'exclusive model' that they have dominated Microsoft with against their own PS4. Am I wrong?
Microsoft seem to happy with their lot, a successful subscription.

To be honest Microsoft should have a massive sale with massive discounts so people's 'loyalty' is sweetened by having access to games they've paid for over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I really doubt it will cost more than €499 for either console they may take a hit the first year by selling them at a slight loss. I'm pretty sure I heard that mentioned about consoles in the past. And then once they start maturing and components start getting cheaper they will start selling them at cost and finally into making a profit.

That's usually the case with PS vs Xbox though, isn't it?

I meant between smart delivery and Microsoft studio games being released day one into gamepass if you have a current system it's not pushing the new system on you but Sony exclusives won't be on both PS4 and 5 so there's a gentle persuasion to get the newer system. Well, from what I read...

That brilliant thing about Gamepass having title like Halo infinite and Hellblade 2 available on Gamepass hoping Halo infinite there at launch.

That what I love about Gamepass .It will save alot people money on xbox series x .I think that why game shops will try push more ps5 perorders since people will have to buy games on ps5.

That not to say people won't buy games on xbox series x like cyberpunk or assassin's creed vanhalla.

I think it's going to be a race to subscriptions like Netflix or Spotify.
If Xbox can tie their customers (like me:pac:) into the monthly Gamepass/Gold/Ultimate then that's a win. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think Msoft are ahead of PS in that gaming aspect.

When it all goes streaming Google will be in there like flynn.

So from a Series X perspective I don't think the price point will be as high as PS... they just got to offload a tonne of these old One Ss and One Xs first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,319 ✭✭✭rob808

I think xbox series x will be price around the same as ps5 around €500 mark.I think the all digital ps5 be around €450 and if Lockhart real €400 to €350 since that be replacing the xbox x with the xbox one getting discontinued.

That my guess doubt we see a €400 xbox series x or ps5.

Yeah subscriptions are the golden goose for everyone at this stage. I think Microsoft have a huge advantage here. With all the game studio acquisitions over the past few years, I'd expect them to go hard at their next event to try and shake the 'no exclusives' tag.

Putting them on Game Pass day one is win/win, as the library of MS exclusives grows, they reduce the need for 3rd party games in the library, which is less to pay out the other side.

I see both companies going aggressive on the pricing for the all digital models. They are all but guaranteeing future sales will go through them. Cut out manufacturing/distribution/reseller profit and you can make back the subsidy pretty quick.

Wow it's really going crazy prices at the moment for the S and X. About a month ago there were a few teaser Xs going for 299, but now they've rocketed up to 400+ and a tonne of Ss are being advertised for 299. I'd say they'll all swop places once the S is practically finished and the X will be 450

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭Vyse Remastered

It will be interesting at the July event to see if they reveal a lower tier system, the much speculated about Series S platform. I'm somewhat confused over how a lower powered system could compete on a next gen level unless it will be more of a streaming platform. I know digital foundry have done a number of videos about it so it is definitely a possibility (lower resolutions etc.)

The other alternative is that they will take the same approach as Sony and just remove the drive although I think this unlikely.

I hope lockhart not real they be better of.following sony with all digital xbox series x.I think lockhart will hold back xbox series x where as sony won't have that problem.

It 4TFP console i don't think it be able to keep up later on in the generation with the xbox series x.I wonder how many people would buy a lockhart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭recyclops

If lockheart was something similar to stadia using the Xcloud base it could work, a gamepass subscription model would be brilliant for those only interested in casual gaming and not pure power.

now the big question is if its possible especially in this country.

    Indeed.

Xcloud is streaming, so the power of the box doesn't really matter.
Xcloud can be played on your mobile, on your browser, on your Xbox One.
All first party titles, for the moment, will play on Xbox One.

I see no benefit to the lockheart box people are talking about. A nothing space between Xbox One and Series X that no one will care about. Whats the sales pitch for it? Here's a console that does nothing more significantly than a One X?

It should either be a digital only version of the Series X, or just forget about it - it has no place in the market.

Microsoft have a massive sell coming up in the series x, if there is very little difference initially between games on the series x and games on the one x then a lot of folks including me will opt to buy PS5 on day one and wait a little longer on series x. One X games look great as it is and all games will be playable on it for the near future.

I wonder is this consumer friendly cross-play decision gonna bite them in the ass, July's conference and the 1st party games on show is going to be very very interesting.

Not sure I get you. You would be buying all your games on the PS5 presumably, just because MS allow back compatibility of next gen games on the Xbox One? Or are you saying you will buy a PS5 and still buy and play games on the One X? Why would you do that when you have a PS5?

Rumour is that Lockhart is intended as a native 1080p console, Series X is intended as a native 4K console. Very simple.

It is perfectly feasible to make it so that it does not 'hold back' the Series X. It is just a case of choosing the specs carefully. You can afford to make the GPU much weaker. You can cut back on RAM. The SSD can do with being a bit slower and smaller since you're dealing with lower res textures (the whole point of smart delivery). The CPU should be pretty close to Series X, you can't cut it back too much. And of course your power supply and cooling solution can be cheaper. There is potentially quite a large cost saving. I could see it being $300 at launch, maybe even $250. To re-iterate, a correctly designed system need not hold back the Series X.

What is the point? To offer an affordable next-gen console for people who don't have a 4K TV. This could be people in poorer countries, kids, people who have a second setup in the spare room. People who have a 4K TV but don't really care about 1080p vs 4k gaming.

Put a non potato CPU in a current One X and you will have a perfectly viable budget "next gen" console imo.

Definitely, but it must have an SSD as next gen games will not be regular HDD compatible.

Put it where? It's an APU. You're talking about a costly redesign.

It's more viable - financially and technically - to design two new systems in parallel, sharing architectures and components. Built on same node. Sharing some economies of scale. Perhaps binning components and putting the lower binned stuff in Lockhart.

    Potato CPU :D
    Funny, cos it's true!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Imagine AMD testing the APU's and seeing a fair few CU's failed. That's enough CU's for a PS5 but not good enough for a Xbox.

The mad thing is they are probably actually doing that.

edit: Ah no they are proably on completely different production lines and specs but who knows they are much the same APU's CPU and GPU but much less Compute Units on PS.

What is the point? To offer an affordable next-gen console for people who don't have a 4K TV. This could be people in poorer countries, kids, people who have a second setup in the spare room. People who have a 4K TV but don't really care about 1080p vs 4k gaming.

Exactly this, if they can hit the design on the head and keep the price low, it will be a game changer.

There's a huge target audience for a next gen console thats sub €300. Think parents roaming around at Christmas trying to please the kids. Odds are the younger ones won't have a 4K tv in the bedroom/playroom anyway. Couple that with Gamepass where they can be up and running for just the cost of the console. It's amazing value. I'd probably pick one up down the line along with a Series X to play when the main TV is in use.

Any next gen titles from 3rd parties will look as good on SX as on PS5.

The issue is, amazingly, the first party titles. They may look much better on SX (Ray Tracing etc) but mechanically they will have been designed for One X. You won't see a game using the SSD speeds as an inherent gameplay mechanic like Rachet and Clank looks to be doing with its Rift stuff. If it isn't possible to do on the One X, you won't see it on SX, I would think. I could be wrong, but I can't see how it could be done.

Phil Spencer talking about the subscription model - GamePass/Console paid monthly on a contract like a phone.

That could be huge, if it is a widely offered solution. Much easier, for me anyway, to justify a cost spread over 2 years (as I do for my phone) than an upfront 500+ payment.

Put it where? It's an APU. You're talking about a costly redesign.

It's more viable - financially and technically - to design two new systems in parallel, sharing architectures and components. Built on same node. Sharing some economies of scale. Perhaps binning components and putting the lower binned stuff in Lockhart.

I thought we can't use APU any more cause its racist or something?

For proof of this you just have to look at the mid-gen systems.

Ask someone who works in a shop what the ratio of PS4 base to pro system sales is in any given month. It's about 3:1 or 4:1. It varies depending on discounts and bundles. Xbox OneS vs OneX is similar.

Most people buying a console pick the cheaper one. The average buyer is highly, highly price-sensitive. That can be easy to forget in a discussion among enthusiasts.

    Would be great alright!
Unfortunately, I don't think the sub service ever came to Ireland!
Hopefully it expands to more countries, ours included :)

I think most people will trade in there console to Gamestop and cex that will soften the blow plus Gamepass will help.

Yeah, that would be my preferred route too! Through CEX.
I normally hold onto them, but what's the point with backward compatibility?

I think I'd be able to convince a few friends to depart with 30 p/m rather than 500 up front, to join me with my new machine :)

Not sure I get you. You would be buying all your games on the PS5 presumably, just because MS allow back compatibility of next gen games on the Xbox One? Or are you saying you will buy a PS5 and still buy and play games on the One X? Why would you do that when you have a PS5?

Because all 1st party games are going to be playable on one x for the near future and as I have gamepass so I will get them all automatically day 1 so no need for series x ( i'm willing to take the SSD and Graphics hit here as one x is already looks pretty sweet)

So that means I can buy a PS5 and have the ability to play their first party games, 3rd party games I will also get on PS5 until I eventually buy the series x.

So exactly what I was saying that could all change if MS kill their July presser and make buying series x essential on day one.

what date is their next press thing?

Don't think they've finalised a date (other than July) yet.

I would be very suprised if the Gaming retailers here did not have Xbox All Access in place for the new console launches. I'd much rather go that way than upfront whack.
