I understand that Irish garda vetting only covers Irish addresses.

How does a person get police clearance from the UK?

What kind of a clearance to you need? Is this for a visa requirement, for a working-with-children position, for something else?

It's for working with the elderly.

You want the Disclosure and Barring Service, who provide checks to assist employers making recruitment decisions in connection with positions where people will be working with vulnerable groups.

The system in the UK is that employers apply directly to the DBS and the DBS discloses information about candidates directly to them. (The candidates have to consent to the application, of course, or the DBS won't make any disclosure.) But you can make what's called a basic check on yourself, and then show that to employers. You get a certificate that will show all your convictions (other than spent conviction).

If employers want more information than that, they need to get a higher-level check on you, and they need to apply for that directly; you can't get it yourself.
