    Worth thinking about?

    Nope. Whatever about price rises and adding more numbers/tickets to make it more difficult I really doubt they're in the habit of faking winners.

    A Priest :rolleyes: now a 38 times millionaire makes people buy more tickets.

    Found €50 yesterday in my local shop. Treated myself to one of these raffle tickets with it. Pure sweet if I get a win.

    I think you should have handed in the €50, what if the owner of that money came back in later to inquire has anyone handed in a €50. I’m often found money in shops and always handed it back. You don’t know what circumstances the person who lost that’s €50 in.

    Oh for crying out loud I did for the first time in my life what the vast majority of people would do. For what it's worth I found a woman's purse a year ago and looked through it for id tracked her down and handed it back to her. 3 weeks ago my phone went missing in Blanchardstown SC when I asked at the info desk had anyone handed it in I was told No.. Where was so called Karma ? Either way i found it and kept it, did absolutely nothing wrong.

    I usually buy one of these every year as part of Christmas present but when I saw they were hiked up to €25 I changed my mind. A rip off.

    Ya I agree the vast majority of people probably would do it.

    I think it's safe to say they're not going to sell half a million tickets by 10pm so what now?

    They've raised the price and the number of tickets sold and it appears the public have voted with their wallets. I'd imagine pushing the draw back or reducing the prize pool would be met with an even less enthusiastic response next year.

    IMO the National Lottery are just going to have to take the hit of "just" a €4m profit (equivalent to 2015) or risk killing the golden goose completely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,772 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

    They were still advertising the draw as being tonight up to half an hour ago so they can't pull out of that one at this stage.

    Bought one a few minutes ago. In the 323k mark now

    There was never any guarantee they'd sell all 500k so I'm not sure why people assumed it would sell out or won't go ahead if it doesn't sell out...

    Reality is the prizes are set-in-stone and once the first ticket is sold, the lottery shoulder the risk that if they don't sell enough tickets, the set-in-stone prizemoney still has to be paid out and they'll shoulder the loss. That's business.

    Initial target is to break-even, which they've done. After that they probably had several targets with 500k tickets being 'best case' scenario.

    It looks like that was now overly ambitious and they'll probably review everything once it's all complete but it's still a massive success. Well over €4m in profit.

    So 8.25 Million at least taken in and 3.5 Million given out in prizes.
    Nice little earner for the National Lottery robbers.

    Almost €4.5m in prizes. All of which were clearly stated before they put guns to people's heads.

    The OP was from last year. €4.44m in 2017.

    no-one is forcing you or anyone to buy a lottery ticket.

    Possibly also check facts before giving fake news.

    65% of ALL income after prizes MUST go to good causes. That is the water-tight legal agreement for the lottery licence.

    So with average 56.5% of overall revenue going in prizes, then 65% of the remaining 43.5% going to good causes (29%) that leaves less than 15% of gross income for all costs (including retailer costs) and profits.

    In 2016 net profit was about 1%

    This ('65% after prizes percent for good causes' is very deceptive) and not even sure that is an accurate figure.
    More like 46% after prizes, with 54% as profit after prizes.
    GC is the lowest receiving percent of all distribution methods.

    Ticket sales: Only 30% goes to 'good causes' (originally was 50% at very start on the lottery's initiation many years ago).
    Scratch cards sales: Only a minuscule 10% of total sales go to 'good causes'

    Thus for this particular draw approx figures are in descending order:

    Income: €12.5m (100%)
    Prize Fund: €4.4m (35.2%)
    Gross Profit/Margin: €4m+ (34.8%)
    Good Causes: €3.75m (30%)

    I can't see how its deceptive. Clearly states 65% of income after prizes goes to causes.

    Originally prize money was just 40%, but that simply did not wash with many players, so it gradually increased amd and is now almost 57% a little closer to general betting - bookies work on 75-80% overall.

    So for every €100 spent on lottery, approximately €57=prizes, €29 = causes and €14 = operational costs / profits.

    Nothing out of the ordinary and hardly "robbers" as the other poster suggested

    I think its picked by an algorithm so no, it will just be announced. Not the most transparent to the general public but there you have it. Open to correction here but I seem to recall seeing it in the terms and conditions?

    You're correct.

    This is from the game rules on the website:

    'Specialised electronic random number generator hardware, or other equipment or draw process as the National Lottery may from time to time determine, will be employed to randomly select the required number of Unique Multiple-Digit Numbers for each division of Prizes in the Christmas Millionaire Raffle Draw 31st December 2017'

    Bought my ticket today. Best of luck all.

    Not sure where you're getting those fake figures, sure you've quoted prizes percentages twice. Give us the % from 'total sales or revenue', not after prizes, not after tea and cakes, not after expenses.
    This event has very different numerals to what you have been suggesting. How can a prize fund of 4.4m from 12.5m total generated be 57% ???

    Income: €12.5m (100%)
    Prize Fund: €4.4m (35.2%) { not your 57% }
    Gross Profit/Margin: €4m+ (34.8%) { not your 14% }
    Good Causes: €3.75m (30%) { not your 29% }

    Terms state this event draw date may be extended until all tickets are sold, so that is unlikely to happen today/tomorrow unless all 500,000 are sold within the next 2hours.

    All it seems to say is that sales close at 10pm, and that the draw takes place on new years eve, so sometime between 10pm and midnight by the looks of it.

    There’s not gonna be much more sold. They’ll be lucky to get to 75% of the 500,000.

    Most shops would be closed early NYE and I doubt many play online
