Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What about rolled barley? I can't be arsed with any wet feeds like fodder beet/maize from around paddy's day onwards bar the weather is like spring 18, too much effort and too much feed space to try ensure each cow gets her say 5kgdm, much easier to take the hit on the feed cost and feed it in the parlour.

To much starch at high feed rates and cows will be getting acidosis with high levels of barley , for convenience soya hulls are probably your best bet, but cost wise the oat hull beet mix here will be costing 155 euro per ton of dm in the pit and is a serious buffer-feed on top of that with high energy and plenty of fibre from the hulls to keep cows stomachs right

The rain is blowing horizontally here now. Rivers are near the top of their banks here so we may as well postpone spring for another 2 weeks.

One of the local grass gurus here put out urea last week on few hundred acres, around 200 acres of it now under a few feet of water

Lovely cool calm night and morning here. Gentle breeze out but no frost or snow, thankfully.

Ah it's a good day when you can get your hedge cut so you can see your badgers. :p
I'd say the wife is thrilled..

Day is not actually too bad here. Not much rain overnight and stock out again.

I hear Alan O Reilly of Carlow Weather of ^^above on the local radio news bulletin about the weather. Another time it'd be Met Eireann. ME are either thrilled or fuming at losing work. I see he's been given the use of a car to promote that car brand. And people say talking about the weather doesn't pay the bills..

It took 12 years before it gave me any benefit :P

A mix really, fr 4530, fr 2298 I've calved a fair share of him no bother, aa4088 as well. Heifers got feck all ration, tbh I was thinking I should have given them more as think some are lacking in condition so silage for the most part, a bit of maize but not much. Some are the last of the autumn born heifers so perhaps put more into the calf as are near fully grown themselves at 2.5

Had 2 bulls with my heifers. A fr and an Angus. 18 calves so far . 1 fr and 17 angus and the fr calf was a bull :)

I'm not making much effort this winter to hold back the drycows or incalf heifers, the silage is reasonably wet but they are getting ad-lib hay and a decent bit of maize, and anything in the calving shed get nearly a full milker diet, and thankfully I'm having very few problems with calvings, alot less than some previous years.

It's supposed to get better from midweek but even my dry fields are saturated this morning. Fecking hate having cows in milking, it adds another 2 hours to the day.

    Was relentless and blustery too.

We had a break and the sky brightened well.
But had a burst of heavy rain, hail and wind. It just slathered out of nowhere and lasted 20 minutes, but serious rain fell in that time. It’s heading on your way now.

Only consolation is we've had far worse winters.
Not sure what it's like with you but at least there's grass there atm to graze whenever the chance presents itself. There's often been times on paddy's day when the cows would be lucky to get out and the place burnt to a crisp with frost.

Got a gust of 109.2kmh here in South Wicklow today
    Trees were bending

That's the thing though..... The rain is bound to stop at some point. It's been almost constantly broken since last August.
And I think the Atlantic will relent within the next 3 weeks. But that means we are likely to get the frost in March and April.
