As above, I'm looking to put together a build focused around software development.

Developing in .net so will be using SQL server, visual studio, visual studio code, etc. Lots of chrome tabs also!

I'm leaning towards more RAM as opposed to higher end graphics card as the xamarin android emulator is ram intensive.

Would like to be able to run up to 2 monitors @ 1440p .
1. What is your budget? [€1000]

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Development with a bit of gaming.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?

5. Do you need a monitor? I could get away without a new monitor for a while. Have a 24inch that would do me. Would like a 32inch 1440p in the future

5a. If yes, what size do you need.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? Current monitor is 1920x1080 , plan to upgrade to 1440p

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? no, i have keyboard, mouse and speakers.

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? yes

8. How can you pay? Credit card / debit card

9. When are you purchasing? No rush, next 30 days

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? don't need help assembling

2nd-gen are fine around 3000MHz, though that kit (Crucial Ballistix) is supposed to be great for manual overclocking - buildzoid says he can get them to 4000+MHz easy.

All CPUs benefit from a better cooler, especially if you have the budget

Thanks! Is the GTX 1660 much better than an equivalent AMD unit in the same price range? Just trying to understand the pros and cons.

Oh yeah, put wrong memory kit (since the Crucial usually are the cheapest DDR4-3000 too).

Regarding GPUs, the RX 590 is basically a refresh of the RX 480/580 that has been pushed way past its efficiency curve.

It loses to the newer 1660 in both performance AND power consumption.

Maybe I'd look at replacing that Intel 660p with something a bit faster, like a Samsung 970 Evo - but in all fairness, you'll probably never notice the difference. Considering it's web development you'll be doing, it might be more useful for you to add a bog standard 2TB hard drive to the configuration purely for storage - and maybe also for the games, plenty of modern games want more than 30GB of space.

The rest is spot on - I have the NZXT H500 case, plenty of quality for the money and looks damn fine. Got the same PSU as well, IIRC it's actually made by Seasonic - in all fairness it's overkill for your system, you could easily run it with a 80+ 500W PSU (recommending stupidly high wattage PSUs is a long-standing myth of PC building), but it won't hurt for sure.

Waiting till black friday before picking these up

I've decided to hold off on a good gfx card for now and wait for 6 months before getting one.

Does it look ok? Is there a card you would recommend around the 50-70 euro mark to get me over the hump?

This PC will be used for software dev and general browsing for the next few months.

I'd rather save up a bit and get a better card then.

I never really understood the point of fully modular PSU's. You'll always need a cable for motherboard and CPU, and all semi-modular have those stuck in by default, and the rest of course then is optional. You could save a bit more if you choose semi-mod instead of fully mod.

The MSI AC motherboard out of the box is not compatible with the 3700X (but it does support Flash bios without CPU installed anyway).
I the MSI Tomahawk max you stated is fine, as it has a larger bios memory size for future updates of CPUs (something I looked into, the current B450 board has memory limitations and doesnt currently support all 3rd gen CPUs due to it(mostly lower end)), will support the 3700X out of the box, and the probablility 4th gen Ryzen will be compatible on the chipset, it makes sense to me to use this as stepping stone if you consider upgrading in future (although AMD hasnt been clear whether next gen CPUs will use new socket or not, they did state they will support the current socket into 2020).

Fully modular makes sense if you're going to DIY your cable lengths, otherwise I agree that semi-modular makes the most sense for most builders.

These are great points. This is why i come here!.
The reason i went with the pro carbon ac is due to it having bluetooth and wifi..

Is the tomohawk max a better board overall? Would i be better off with a seperate wireless card for BT and wifi?

I didn't realise semi modular would be just as easy to work with.

The last 4 Carbon AC's I bought from Amazon for builds all work with the 3xxx out of the box. Just something to note.

Also the Carbon AC has a better LAN chip and audio chip btw.
