Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Leicester go through with as much bother as they had from Spurs that season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Next up is a huge battle

IMO the greatest Irish athlete of all time, the chairman of the boards Eamon Coughlan and his 1983 world championship gold with that cheeky smile as he knew he had it. Was robbed of Olympic gold by drug cheats

Versus the man who's milk poster adorned my wall as a child, united the north in their support for him, Barry McGuigan wins the world title at loftus road

Leicester. Possibly the greatest sports story ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Coughlan gets my vote, like I said I think hes our greatest ever athlete and in a stacked event like the 1500m this is some acheivement

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Eamonn Coughlan, finally getting the gold medal he deserved.

    Eamon Coughlan for me

Barry McGuigan, old enough to remember it, and a great achievement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,941 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Eamonn vs Barry.....
    Very close one.
Really agree with the impact Barry had in uniting the country at the time but also think Eamonn's was excellent.

    Barry for me. Just.

    Eamon Coughlan for me

Gonna give Barry a vote here myself.

    It's very close though.

I'm going to leave this one here for the evening, hopefully Eamon pulls through

I'll pick up again tomorrow morning

Barry for me as even though I was around for both I just about remember being aware of Mcguigan's win - certainly more so as I grew up.

Am I missing the results by the way or are we running simultaneous questions?

    New glasses needed

Only been 4 matches so far and the results have been listed

    4-4

This was always going to be close

Barry McGuigan for me. He became so much more than a boxer, he bridged the divide when it needed bridging and was a great man. That was all possible because of this win

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,025 ✭✭✭duffman13

That's a tough one, Coughlan was screwed out of a lot in his career, McGuigan was an extremely uniting force and his win was momentous.

McGuigan just shades it for me

  • Registered Users Posts: 657 ✭✭✭irishejit

I'll forget his current problems with Frampton and go for wee Barry....very exciting fighter, and an uncle of mine was the last to fight him as an amateur...mind you that should mean i go against him doesn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

We'll leave Eamon and Barry there for a while

Next up and I hope theres only one winner here

Usain Bolt's 100m win in Beijing, amazing to do it on the biggest day

Versus a couple of lucky goals for United against Bayern

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Bolt, probably the most amazing athlete we'll ever have the privilege of seeing in our lifetimes. Plus as a Leeds fan I could never vote for that lot in red.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,421 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

I will vote Bolt, great individual performance. I could never hold my head up high again if I voted United.

Bolt, let's not be silly here. There's only one European cup final worthy of progressing and it's not this one ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 657 ✭✭✭irishejit

You first three are all completely wrong.....the 99 Champions League Final for me, when taken in the context of the whole seasons achievements its the greatest sporting event ever...full stop, no arguments, you might as well go home now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Bolt obviously gets my vote, amazing sprinter

Fancy sticking in a vote for the Eamon Coughlan V Barry McGuigan tie

True, fluking the CL after only amassing 79pts in a poor domestic league is more impressive than it would seem these days, when the English entrants to the CL are much stronger ;)

Bolt for me but to what extent that's because the other option is Utd remains unclear.
If Jamaican athletics is found to be dodgy and there are rumours it is still Bolt, if Bolt is a robot, it's still Bolt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,025 ✭✭✭duffman13

United champions league final, incredible game that Bayern should have been out of sight in. Unbelievable two minute spell, amazing stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,400 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

A toughie. I'm a United fan and that was an incredible night but there's something about being the fastest man on earth that surpasses most if not all sporting achievements for me.

Bolt for me. But won't be too disappointed to see it lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

It's probably moot at this stage but the drama of the 99 Final was something to behold. The Bolt run was amazing but it's blink and you miss it (which says a lot about him tbf!). The tension, the rolling of the dice with the keeper up, playing the whole game 1-0 down only to crush the opponents in that fashion. Fairytale stuff.

    Champions League for me

    6-3

United could hardly come back again?

Edit: remember I’m still looking for votes in the last tie, if you haven’t voted do me a solid

Already have G&R, the post before this tie was put up

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Sorry United fans, its Bolt for me.

I remember exactly where I was for that run, can't say the same for the CL Final despite knowing I did watch it.

Doesnt have the same meaning for me either I think as it's more personal to fans of the club I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

So Usain sprints into round 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Brazil suffered a humiliating defeat at home in the 2014 world cup, 7-1 to the Germans

    Or

    Nadia Comaneci's perfect 10 in Montreal 1976

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

I think the 7-1 is more about embarrassment so my vote is for Comaneci

Comaneci for me....her achievement as the first 10 will always be remembered, I'd forgotten about that drubbing until the post came up so that should say everything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,400 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Germany. Too young for Comaneci. The game itself was a spectacle as hammerings like that just shouldn't happen in a World Cup semi. Also a huge amount of schadenfreude in that I'd been in the Aviva two years previously when Germany beat us 1-6 so nice to see a top level country be at the end of an even worse hiding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,421 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Comaneci for me. Never heard of her but just had a quick read. A team trashing another team take a lot of luck in that the other implodes. Taking nothing away from the achievement, though that individual performance just seems like a lot more preparation went into it.

So, the germans didn't play great to get 7-1 against brazil?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Nadia was before my time but obviously she's still iconic. However to drub the greatest nation on earth when it comes to soccer, at their own world cup, in a semi final was surreal. Some of the imagery from it summed it up. Transcended age, race, gender. Just an absolute one off.

    Germany v Brazil for me.

I mean more it’s memorable because it was in Brazil and they got embarrassed.
Plus some of the Brazil lads lied down, David Luiz I’m looking at you

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Comaneci for me. Ground breaking performance. Whilst the 7-1 was a crazy event it was almost one of those fluke performances in the first half where every shot went in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,331 ✭✭✭Guill

Comaneci - Hers was about achievement and perfection. Brazil was the exact opposite. Anyone can be beaten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

5-2, closer than the soccer match

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

Nadia, it's an iconic moment in Sport. The humiliation of Brazil doesn't create warm happy feelings for me despite fuzzy hair's tears

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

I'm going to allow Nadia to advance at 6-2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

They invented the game but it didn't stop Ireland beating them at the 2011 Cricket world cup, everyone loves a good win over England

    Or

The first Liverpool entry, the Gerrard final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,025 ✭✭✭duffman13

The cricket, what a day, watched cricket for years and Irish cricket, that was amazing. That team really made a name on the international scene

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

As a Liverpool fan, Ireland's win. It's only the FA Cup and was great at the time but it was only the FA Cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,433 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Liverpool fan here too, that’s not even the best Liverpool FA cup final win, the ’89 final with Aldridge and Rush was absolutely fantastic.

Ireland beating England was huge and gets my vote
