NASCAR is rain delayed this evening. The race is on Premier Sports 2 again so not much fun.

Yeah, not looking good for tonight. Larson has been best all weekend but if they get to go tonight I don't think it suits him with all the grip washed off the track. Very hard to run up high like he does under those conditions.
Kyle Busch has an awful record in the spring race at Dover. Harvick has been going well this weekend but his car has not been consistent through races at any stage this season. Truex and Erik Jones have looked good. Last week's winner Chase Elliott has the pole.

Looks like we are getting some action. All about to get going, national anthem just finished.
I doubt we ate going to get a full race though, seems to be more weather threatening to come through in about an hour.

Tonight at 12.30am we get the Digital Ally 400 from Kansas.
Kevin Harvick has been the man all week ably assisted by his teammates Clint Bowyer and Aric Almirola. Just Busch and Kyle Larson have had a decent week also and Chase Elliott has been up there as well.
Not many of the Toyotas have shown much and some of them haven't even completed a consecutive 10 laps in practice but you can never rule out Kyle Busch and past weeks runaway winner Martin Truex jnr.
Gotta fancy that Truex will get in the mix again with how good his car was last weekend. Harvick though has had the best 10 lap averages in both practices and he also qualified on pole.

Coca Cola 600 starting in the next half hour or so.
Kyle Busch is a strong favourite after qualifying in third and dominating final practice with the best 5, 10, 15 and 20 lap averages.
The whole Joe Gibbs team has looked good this weekend. Penske boys can never be ruled out of course. Harvick and the Haas team look a little below their normal level this weekend but again you can never rule them out.
Final word goes to Alex Bowman who has finished second the last three weeks. Thus young man has replaced Dale Earnhardt Jr in the no.88 which is a lot of pressure for a young driver. It looks like he is coming close to a win, it'd be nice to see him get it in time next of the flagship races like this one.

I'm gonna go with Martin Truex jnr ftw in this one after a big duel with Kyle.

A great race tonight, think there was 26 lead changes. Truex got it done.

Another victory for Kyle Busch at Pocono yesterday. He was won 55 Nascar Cup races

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,941 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Yeah, dominated yesterday. Truex car was poor yesterday, felt he was the only guy who could challenge Kyle.
They need to work on getting Erik Jones a win now to have their whole team in the playoffs. Serious chance that it's a Toyota driver winning the cup series title this year.

Sonoma was a great race for Toyota with four of them finishing in the top five. I'm happy with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,941 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Hendricks Motorsport were back on top this weekend in Chicagoland. Alex Bowman driving what used to be Dale Jnrs no.88 got his first ever win, Jimmie Johnson led at one stage and came home fourth, William Byron also lead at one stage before a bad restart killed his chances and he finished 8th. Chase Elliott had a trouble filled day and at one stage was two laps down but battled back for an 11th place finish to round out a great weekend for the Chevy team. Another Chevy driven by Kyle Larson chased down Bowman and took the lead for a couple of laps before Bowman got back by him for the win. Joey Logano had a consistent day and got third.
It's on to Daytona next Saturday night for the Coke Zero 400. Should be a very exciting race with lots of crashes likely in a crazy restrictor plate race.

Fantastic win by Chase Elliott. Into the wall on a restart, then got back into it taking advantage of some cautions.

Good fun doing a burn out celebrating the win where he got the tyre barrier earlier.

Should be a great one. Most all time wins is 11 by Jimmie Johnson, winner of the spring race at the track Martin Truex Jr. who won the two races before last week, Chase Elliott who has the best average finish here, won this last year and won last week, you've got Kyle Larson who is great on this track, Kevin Harvick who has led the most laps at this track, you can never rule out Kyle Busch and then my pick is Denny Hamlin who has had a serious long run car all season and got the pole in a record time for this. William Byron is a dark horse, has been qualifying up front a lot recently but they've tuned the car down a little looking for more consistency this week.
Should be a great race tonight.

Asinine is the word Tony Stewart used to describe Nascar in Texas and F1 being on the same day - the empty grandstands at the Nascar playoffs will have one promoter very unhappy

The rule is one race decides the championship - the series winner - but you have to feel others are more deserving.

Not a fan of Kyle. Do like Toyota though.

Pity Denny had a mare today. Stupid grill tape.

Jimmy Johnson is to retire at end of the 2020 season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,941 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It'll be sad to see Jimmy go, hopefully he has a good car next year and can go out on a high.
In other not so new news, Daniel Suarez is out of SHR and Cole Custer will take over the no. 41.
Christopher Bell is going to Leavine family racing who have a partnership with Joe Gibbs racing with whom Bell has a contract. Matt Di Benedetto has moved from the 95 to Wood brothers.
The last of the big three in the Xfinity series for the past two seasons is Tyler Reddick and he is also moving up into the no. 8 for RCR. He won the xfinity series the last two years.
It's going to be some battle for the rookie of the year title.
If you asked me a year ago I'd have said that Christopher Bell would be the superstar among those three but now I'm not so sure. We could be seeing a lot of young drivers coming through over the next couple of years with Bell turning 25, Reddick and Eric Jones both 23, and Custer and William Byron 21.
I think there will be a lot of cup championships between those five over the next decade.

So this Daytona 500 was originally supposed to start at 7.30.

Then it got delayed because of Trump and delayed for rain.

It's now nearly 9 and it still hasn't started *zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,684 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Just turned it on, feckin raining. How many laps did they get done? Didn't seem like many.

Green flag came out at 9:21; we got 20 laps in before the rain returned with a vengeance.

I'm gonna give up. Looks like I'll miss this while it's run at some stage through the night. Reading online that they need to get this done so that they can pack up and go west for next weekend.

9.00pm Irish time tonight. The Trump stuff was a bit surreal.

Unfortunate for Byron. Stenhouse seen Almirola drop to the bottom and was gonna jump in front of him but obviously seen there was nobody behind Aric and went back up catching Byron's left rear quarter panel.

Logano at fault for that ?

Lot of good cars out with 15 laps to go - Red Flagged

I wouldn't lay blame but definitely the catalyst to the incident happening.

That's a horrible impact to Newman, on driver's side of car, while sliding on his roof. Denny Hamlin only being subdued after his celebration. Surely the team would have told him to calm it down not knowing Newman's condition. Hope the guy is ok.

Hamlin wins after a last-lap (lap 209!), last-straight incident between Blaney and Newman sends Newman up and over; then gets hit directly in the driver's side front window by another car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,941 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I backed Hamlin but I'm gutted for Ryan Newman who I backed at 40/1. Also had Stenhouse Jr. and Byron.
    Hamlin is the king of Daytona though. Since 2012 he has finished 4th, 14th, 2nd, 4th, 1st, 17th, 3rd, 1st, 1st.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,752 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

Hopefully Newman is ok, but it looks bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 485 ✭✭guyfo

That was truly horrific to watch, it seemed to go on forever. Let's hope there is good news soon regarding Ryan Newman.

Edit: Newman is in serious but non-life threatening condition.

Just saw this. Terrible accident. Must admit I didn't think it was that bad at first. I've seen many spectacular crashes at Daytona/Talledega and drivers always seemed to walk away. The slow motion close up shot really shocked me though. Absolute brutal hit into the drivers side. Good to hear he's awake and talking, but sounds like a long recovery ahead. Fingers crossed for him.

Fantastic news - Ryan Newman is fully alert and up and walking about his hospital room .

A picture has been released of a smiling Ryan with his 2 daughters in his hospital room.

I feared the worst when I saw the accident on Monday night , the only relief being that the survival cell was pretty much intact.

How Nascar reacts is to be seen ,Nascar,Joe Gibbs and Denny Hamlin have apologised for celebrating the win ,Denny being roundly booed by the crowd.

Facts are though that the seeds of the current racing go back to 1988 so change is unlikely. ..

Been a busy few days in NASCAR land. First Bubba Wallace loses sponsors for rage quitting an official (I think) NASCAR iRacing event, then Kyle Larson gets the sack for using the N-word on his Twitch stream of a different event.

Been a busy few days in NASCAR land. First Bubba Wallace loses sponsors for rage quitting an official (I think) NASCAR iRacing event, then Kyle Larson gets the sack for using the N-word on his Twitch stream of a different event.
He got suspended by Nascar, sacked by his team and lost his two main sponsors.
It'll play out like this. No car this year, does the mandatory course, gets an Xfinity ride next season as he spends time visiting troubled teens and the likes telling them how awful racism is and then gets a ride in the Cup series again with a bit of a redemption story where it will be made clear that he didn't understand his actions but has learned a hard lesson and is actively involved in trying to prevent people doing things like this.

Nascar is planning to return on May 17th in Darlington with mid week races and Charlotte the following weekend.

Race behind closed doors with 'one' day races

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,941 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Ryan Newman has fully recovered from his horrific crash and will be ready to go when NASCAR returns.
It's amazing that one of the critical things that saved him from being a lit worse was the Newman bar which is a safety bar he suggested should be in all NASCAR frames. All teams agreed and placed it in the cars.
