I was mourning the demise of the Irish Weather Online website when I googled IWO this week to see if there was anything stirring. I found this - http://www.iwo.ie Best of luck to whoever set it up.

It looks good. Best of luck to the owner.

Not that it's really any of my business, either way, but if that site isn't by the original owners of the other site, wouldn't breach of copyright law be a bit of a concern for whoever just created it?

This blog is not linked in any way to IWO (Irish weather online). It simply uses the IWO name.

Pretty weak calling the site irish weather online. you should maybe think of turning that off before you get yourself in trouble.

 I think you might be wrong there maybe but they put this up on their IWO facebook a while back

'ANNOUNCEMENT: Irishweatheronline is currently under new ownership! Details of the new owners of the site cannot be released due to a confidentiality agreement! The new owners are working on a new site which will hopefully be live soon, so stay tuned!'

so that must be what goin on with the new site

Copyright is usually associated with protecting ideas or creations not names.

If it's a company name it can be registered as a company or if it's a logo it can be registered as a trademark. IWO.ie must have been available as a domain name so there is no problem using it.

You could register www.met-eireann.ie and start working away on it.

Spot on, Joe. There is nothing to stop anyone buying a domain name and operating a website from same.

My point is that IWO trading as Irish Weather Online was registered earlier this year. That point was made to emphasise that IWO, trading as Irish Weather Online, has no involvement with this site and the intended use and marketing of the IWO name in the latter is poor form to say the least. Good luck to them though. The more websites dealing with Irish weather that there are, the more informed we all will be.

As for the IWO website, it is no longer online but very well may return in the future.

i went to the bother because the iwo.ie site is poorly but together and i wanted to know if it was the same people that had the original site.i now know that it isent.if u are going to set it up right your going the wrong way about it u have allready pissed of wofie who knows more than all the weather heads on this form put together

The original site was irishweatheronline.COM, this one is iwo.IE. A rip off of the original and an attempt to piggyback on its success if you ask me.

Some shady dealings going on here with some of our weather boardsies.

The relevant legislation presumably covers brands, brand names, etc. Cadburys have their purple brand color protected.

You can't just set up a very similar branded business / website to someone else and call it the same name and ride on the back of their hard work building their brand, etc.

And I don't believe you could register www.met-eireann.ie and work away on it. Ireland has fairly strict criteria in registering .ie domains to prevent such misuse. I think it all stems from the Bertie Ahern debacle where someone registered the domain, put porn on it and wanted big money to sell it to the real Bertie.
