Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was mourning the demise of the Irish Weather Online website when I googled IWO this week to see if there was anything stirring. I found this - http://www.iwo.ie Best of luck to whoever set it up.

Not that it's really any of my business, either way, but if that site isn't by the original owners of the other site, wouldn't breach of copyright law be a bit of a concern for whoever just created it?

This blog is not linked in any way to IWO (Irish weather online). It simply uses the IWO name.

Pretty weak calling the site irish weather online. you should maybe think of turning that off before you get yourself in trouble.

 I think you might be wrong there maybe but they put this up on their IWO facebook a while back

'ANNOUNCEMENT: Irishweatheronline is currently under new ownership! Details of the new owners of the site cannot be released due to a confidentiality agreement! The new owners are working on a new site which will hopefully be live soon, so stay tuned!'

so that must be what goin on with the new site

Copyright is usually associated with protecting ideas or creations not names.

If it's a company name it can be registered as a company or if it's a logo it can be registered as a trademark. IWO.ie must have been available as a domain name so there is no problem using it.

You could register www.met-eireann.ie and start working away on it.

Spot on, Joe. There is nothing to stop anyone buying a domain name and operating a website from same.

My point is that IWO trading as Irish Weather Online was registered earlier this year. That point was made to emphasise that IWO, trading as Irish Weather Online, has no involvement with this site and the intended use and marketing of the IWO name in the latter is poor form to say the least. Good luck to them though. The more websites dealing with Irish weather that there are, the more informed we all will be.

As for the IWO website, it is no longer online but very well may return in the future.

i went to the bother because the iwo.ie site is poorly but together and i wanted to know if it was the same people that had the original site.i now know that it isent.if u are going to set it up right your going the wrong way about it u have allready pissed of wofie who knows more than all the weather heads on this form put together

The original site was irishweatheronline.COM, this one is iwo.IE. A rip off of the original and an attempt to piggyback on its success if you ask me.

Some shady dealings going on here with some of our weather boardsies.

The relevant legislation presumably covers brands, brand names, etc. Cadburys have their purple brand color protected.

You can't just set up a very similar branded business / website to someone else and call it the same name and ride on the back of their hard work building their brand, etc.

And I don't believe you could register www.met-eireann.ie and work away on it. Ireland has fairly strict criteria in registering .ie domains to prevent such misuse. I think it all stems from the Bertie Ahern debacle where someone registered the domain, put porn on it and wanted big money to sell it to the real Bertie.

This latest site is obviously a vexatious attempt to aggravate and annoy.

To be honest, to whomever is behind it, it is pretty pathetic behavior. Why would anyone spend time doing such?

Why not invest as much energy in actually setting up an original site for genuine positive reasons?

    Bizarre behavior.

Ok, no problem in getting a .com

    I set up this thread.

I have no involvement in the new IWO site or any other site and don't know who is operating the site. My original intention was to draw your attention to the existence of a new weather related site. I was surprised that the new IWO site was online for a few days and there was no buzz about it on these forums. I had assumed that a user of these forums had set the site up. I was expecting some enlightenment from yourselves. This thread has now turned into a dispute about copyright etc.

My interest and that of many people is the establishment of a weather related site of similar calibre and scope of the original Irish Weather Online site. I would like this thread to concentrate on this rather than disputes over copyright. Perhaps the more experienced of you could facilitate this either through cooperating with the new site or establishing a new one.

I have to agree. I actually think it isn't a bad looking site at all and obviously there has been work put into it but something does not sit right with me about it at all. If it was under any other (original) name I would commend without limit but in using the 'IWO' name tag I can't help thinking that this site and thread was designed simply to provoke and invoke reaction - which, so far, has succeeded in doing so far it would seem.
I may well be wrong and if it was set up with genuine and with the best of intentions then the best of luck with it.

This just in... "Irish Weather Online
CLARIFICATION: A newly launched website, www.iwo.ie, is in no way related to Irish Weather Online or services provided by IWO despite clear branding references to indicate otherwise. The irishweatheronline.com website is offline at present."

I am the one behind the site it has been setup as a community based site to provide people with weather information and to allow them to share their weather stories and photos.

I didn't intend to put the site live yet but google crawled and it someone found it (btw I have no clue who the OP is).

The domain was made available to me and I embraced it as I am already active on the net with Carlowweather.com for some time.

I could have chosen a new name but IWO is nice and simple domain name and the term is generic and I have been posting about Irish Weather Online for years.

I'm sure it will offend some people but this site is not commercial and any money earned from it will be used for weather projects.

The site is a simple basic Wordpress template but I would like to get it developed and make it easier for people to contribute as the first post states http://iwo.ie/2011/12/05/irish-weather-online-launches/

This site may not be a success but I think its worth trying.
